Children play

Mouths open in silent wonder

Purple waves

Begin to roll

Lovers love

Holding hands

A final time

Together

Drowning

Faces lit with

Jasmine yellow

And fuchsia fire

Reflect the falling embers

Burning sky and haunted beauty

Sunset at the end of the world

one word brings everything to a verge
of a million setting suns
setting fire to the sunset
of the oblivion of time
the galaxy awaits
for a million more
sunrises
a million settings suns is a fiery awakening

i close my eyes
because my heart seems to ache
with a feeling i cannot place
just a little poem for your evening reading

A palace by the sea for you and me.
a palace by the sea where mermaids swim free.
a palace by the sea where I wrap my arms around you tight
as we get lost in a beautiful sunset every night.

What's your happy place?

The sun screams for a chance to speak

when the night is early

and the toads and crickets have yet to creak.

She wants her last word to be prominent

so she sends a philharmonic array of colors;

Her reds full and oranges bashful to announce she is nothing but dominant.

The moon makes soft wishes to be seen

In the night, she whispers to her creatures

hoping one day that she will be noticed by the queen.

She wants nothing but romance

so she fills her sky with home and tiny stars

that twinkle with joy, but the sun dares not to spare a glance.

The sunrise squeals with delight

for it's that start of a new day, new beginnings

yet she is filled with nothing but spite.

She spews harsh words at the mournful moon

and she envies the birds as they sing

because she herself can never manage to sing in tune.

The sunset lowers with ease

she says her most heartfelt condolences to those who are lost

and spreads her love through the air with her calming breeze.

She tells the moon to not be so scared

she should enjoy the company of her little stars and that in doubt,

she should remember that between her and the sun, light will always be shared.

Violets
by Michael R. Burch

Once, only once,
when the wind flicked your skirt
to an indiscreet height

and you laughed,
abruptly demure,
outblushing shocked violets:

suddenly,
I knew:
everything had changed.

Later, as you braided your hair
into long bluish plaits
the shadows empurpled,

the dragonflies’
last darting feints
dissolving mid-air,

we watched the sun’s long glide
into evening,
knowing and unknowing.

O, how the illusions of love
await us in the commonplace
and rare

then haunt our small remainder of hours.

i hope someday you'll remember:
the picture you took with your eyes
of a lovely, quiet, peaceful sunset
me sitting next to you, telling you:
"i will never forget this point in time."

i will always remember:
the picture i took with my eyes
of a gentle, warm, beautiful smile
of the March weather, ever so kind
"i hope we'll end up being happy."

i remember the day still.
but i don't know what i feel
like when you're ill
are you something my mind should ****?
some time ago.
And the sky is blazing
The breath is pulled out
God is in a sky like that

A sky like that strips you
You're small and happier for it
So big it doesn't even stare back

A sky like that puts fire in your chest
The world below alive at its behest
And how could we dare hope to touch it

As sun sets over the mountain,
crowning this miraculous country,
wreathing it in purest gold,
visions of absent glory
cleave to the luster hanging,
suspended above the contours
of this majestic empire,

and by the light of that brilliant corona,
enduring the blameless and bitter dusts of time,
a delicate mirage emerges,
chronicling the last vestiges
of the valorous heroes who came before,
who influence our proud and dignified march.

And where a ceremony awaits -
beyond the scope of that western realm,
beyond the reach of that bleeding sun
into which silhouettes now fade -
to laurel today's new hero with a crown
of golden light,
so too awaits the ecstatic promise
of a brand-new, untamed world.
Title taken from and poem inspired by a song, "The Ecstasy of Gold" by Ennio Morricone.
