My insides melt like swirling colors on a palate
Forcing blues to mar yellows, a change in their nature
Who churn out forests of growing worry green

It hurts, I swear, this sea-sick array
Makes a fool out of me and an icon out of you
These patterns were fine until you added your streak
Now you peel back layers as I brush off the pain(t)

I am but an onion
Peel away all my layers
All that's left is my tears
JV Beaupre May 2016
Some events fall out, like onions in layers
and in different layers, a different reality.
But the thing of it is, is to grow at each layer,
and to know if you're traveling inward or out.

When we met,
you were a caterpillar
and I was the most beautiful butterfly
you had ever seen.

Time passed,
and the layers of your cocoon
came calling down
as you emerged with colors I've never seen;
now I search for vibrant flowers
to bring these dull shades of mine
to life.
Denel Kessler Feb 2016
Everything heavy
settles
accumulating
as I go about
my external life
like my inner one
doesn't exist

when the tide
recedes
on my knees
in the fetid mud
I will dredge
meaning from
the layers
Esther Feb 2016
the heat melted off our layers
of trust and skin, stripping us
naked and vulnerable,
scared and suspicious.
the summer peeled us apart,
cast us strangers.
*Who are you?

For you, I will peel back my hearts callused layers.

Come over and peel away my skin
layer by layer
you won't find bones or muscles
you won't find viens or nerves
you'll find strings of anxiety
you'll find long lines of worries
all held together by rusted nails
