Lost bearing, a bird,
Slams against window pane;
Nature’s guards forced down?
Amanda Kay Burke Dec 2018
I wish you would open up your mind
Let me inside that beautiful maze
But the closest I've gotten is the entrance
Cannot travel past your daunting gaze

I don't know how to break down walls
You've built up higher than the clouds
I've also tried to scale tall gates
Either I'm too weak or you're too proud

Your feelings are impenetrable
A fortress rendered from stone
Your mansion is a magnificent sight
Why do you choose to live there alone?

I behold the entry to the prison
Caging your enigmatic emotions
And ponder the wilderness beyond
A forest of uncharted notions

I wish I could pick the lock to your heart
Or find a window so into your soul I could see
I long to explore the depths of those labyrinths
But you will never hand over the key
I gave you the key to my heart long ago. You gave me a key as well but now I realize it was a duplicate, as you have given many others. Who has your original?

the mist is frosty and cold
my finger draws upon it
tales and myths of old
i wonder if they bought it

the lies of loving who i am
slide from off my tongue
i ran and ran and ran and ran
to get away from blazing suns

my childhood calls like a mother
waiting for her precious child
as if she knew the others
had been abusing me with smiles

i told them over and over again
that i was grown and truly an adult
that i truly didn't need my friends
disproved sorely by my childish sulk

the window panes are cold
and it hurts to touch my memories
i felt so young i feel so old
i'm just a heartbroken trilogy

i was a babe and then a teen
i grew into my full grown skin
so hard-hearted and awfully mean
that i couldn't ever fit in

i hated growing pains
they reminded me of my age
that i was always always changing
always always a newly flipped page

it hurts it hurts it hurts
these unbearable window panes
it hurts it hurts it hurts
these horrible growing pains

what is this snow outside the window
early snow and morning outside
today and today tomorrow today
today is the first first first snow
outside the window now and yesterday and today
I woke up and a strong wind blew and
there was no rain but there was a strong wind
strong enough and here he is now
still today today is still stronger
what is the snow outside the window and early morning

A gateway into another world,
It reflects the stars, hanging in the sky,
Immaculate dewdrops
Twining into each other
Like so many dancers
They twist and turn
A finger wipes through them
Their partners are whipped away.
An exhale and mist covers their dreams
A simple window
A mirror of reflection
I see a balance of tension within its creation
The morning nature arose in its fresh tree pine
Shining itself upon the window's shrine
What do I see?
I spy with my little eye
A sea of independence
And a faction of world pride

Leading forth its beauty
A crack is present on the glass
What could this mean?
Was destruction awake in its past?
Was it a breach of war in its latch?
Or just a simple pile of rough, rocky ash?

A window's future
A glass stain, a mark on impermeability
To be recovered?
Could this be the open solitude of infinity?
Deer with long tracks sheer the day
Upon its past age
Or was it just a present revelation of roadkill...
That subdued its inward rage?
People withstood many triumphs, and
Most filled with anger
Some responsibility taken
Others with pain and no hope to salver
A mirror is worth an antique
Of power and immortality
Not the glass type, but
Our own view of sanity.
This was the first personal poem I ever wrote back in 2009. I definitely had a vision for this piece as I was writing it. It holds a very special place in my heart, although I may have edited a line or two for it to make more sense, lol. Always room for improvement! I hope to build upon each of my poems until they reach their final versions in a poetry collection of mine one day. That would be awesome!

From the mirror window
What do you see?
From broken glass
And fallen dreams
What do you see?
The moon shines brightly in the nights
Where the stars glow past the darkened flow
The hollows whose bark falls apart
Landing upon a chill cold ground
What do you see?
In a window light
Shining brighter as ever
Leaving a path past the midnight
And a bird's crooked crow
What do you see
When you stare ever blankly
Through the shattered window?
