I could've been a lord or a captain
Dispensing orders and leading a team
Yet I'm as average as can be
I could've been an athlete or an actor
Running to happiness or pretending to glory
Yet I'm as average as average can be
I could've been a singer or dancer
On the grand stage hearing fans scream
Yet I'm average as can be
I want all these things not one or none
But growing up I was told it cannot be done
I'll lead my own way to stardom
without anyone's help
I want the world to look up at this nobody and say
We need your help
On terms of being average

Sometimes he's not the one you are looking for,
but he is right there in front of you
It's not that he's incomparable but you have no one to compare him to
It's not that he makes you feel you're the only one on Earth but he's nice and once in a while, he gives you a compliment you think about all day and night
It's not that he's funny enough to do stand up comedy, yet he still makes you laugh with his corny jokes and stupidity
He's not the best looking guy out there but he makes you wonder whether looks even matter
It's not that he is your soulmate, but he's there when you need him

Slowly but surely, all these factors add up
and you start to fall for him

You find yourself falling in love with average
Falling in love with average doesn't mean you won't have an extraordinary love.

Just once,
I'd like to be normal,
Average.

Or the median,
Mode,
Or range.
I'm not picky.

Too smart for my own good,
But actually stupid.

Too clumsy to play a sport,
Yet I play anyway.

Either the pliable,
Gullible,
Easy to mess with nerd.

Or the weak link,
On the basketball team.

Is fitting in,
Just once,
Too much to ask for?

Is one real friend,
That big of a request?

Is knowing what to say,
Really that hard?

Is being pretty,
Too big a wish to grant?

Why can't I be normal,
For once in my life?
I've never been normal

People say that I'm not the average black girl...
And I don't know whether to take that as an insult or a compliment
Am I not the average black girl because I am so well-spoken?
The fact that I am able to articulate my words...
Or that if a person misuses a word that I simply correct them?
Am I not the average black girl because I don't wear a weave in my hair with noticeable tracks?
Or that instead of me shaking my *** for the world to see...
I choose to make something of myself without diminishing myself?
Am I not the average black girl because I chose a path different from the other black girls...
The path of the dropouts, and being baby mamas at the age of 16...
What is the average black girl?
To me, there is no such thing as the average black girl...
The word "average" is what society has pegged a black girl as being the norm of what black girls are seen as or are supposed to be.
But me, I'm just a black girl

Bad jokes, strong opinions, attention ****** galore
Brown nosing, over-reacting, annoying and more
Glorifying their actions, they're very self-centered
Extremely sheltered with no sense of adventure

Striving for A's and everyone knows it
But they have a big mouth, and they need to close it
They think there's a big conflict between AP and IB
But they can't just make friends, from what I can se

High school won't determine your life, wake up
One bad grade won't make you start begging from a cup
They think they're always right, and will never agree
But they're bound by ignorance, and will never be free.

70% of them really grind my gears
But I'm only here for one more year.
This was solely made by me, other people can have their own opinions on IB

We are simple people,
whose names won't be remembered.
They will not build us monuments
or carve our faces into stones.

When we pass from this world
they will not broadcast our names
on the Television to tell the world.
Our mourners will not fill up Cathedrals.

Instead we will get a single column Obituary.
We shall lay our broken bodies in the family plot
next to those who left before us,
waiting patiently for those to come.

We are simple people and this our fate.
To celebrate the most mundane of things.
Baptisms and weddings;
First homes and new friends.

This is the life for which we live.
It is not a grand tale embodied with gold
but do not let this fool you.
Do not let this diminish its worth.

For this is an ordinary miracle.
A magnificent gift to be nobody,
and yet be everybody.
This is the phenomenon of simple life.

I'm not good with words
they always come out wrong
but I'll write you a poem
because you keep me supported like my unswept floorboards
you have that wonderful smell of old ***** books
I want us to get together like cars merging into one lane of traffic
You're prettier than a third grader's sloppy cursive
You have a shine kinda like how people shine after sweating in the heat
you're more attractive than an icecream truck to suburban little kids
Your eyes are greener than lettuce
and your voice is more captivating than ****** pop music on the radio

Here's your poem
I told you I'm no good with words so yeah I'm not sure how to end this
Intentionally trying to write an awkward and unromantic poem is hard.
