Glass Jar
Bekah Halle Sep 2024
Stuck, enclosed in a glass jar.
Child-like, naked, incapable;
Round and round in circles, longing to move forward.
Freedom the babe craves, dreaming to be the One who opens the lid.
Observable to the judging onlookers,
Such power was relinquished.

Hold my heart
Bekah Halle Jan 26
Hold my heart,
Tend to my heart,
Heal my heart.
Don’t disregard,
It. For the world,
Waits for no one
Life wounds, wielding judgment, and
Unsavoury sound bites, but
Lean into me,
Lean in a little closer, and
I'll mend your heart,
As I massage it back to life,
One precious moment at a time.

You don't scare me
Bekah Halle Jan 2024
You don’t scare me any more!
You're just hot air,
Good only for (hot air) balloons.
So, rather than running away and hiding,
I will not jump into your basket, and
Ride your highs.
I will see the mountains, and
Leave you behind.
Because that is what your furry does,
Drive people away so they do not see,
You on the inside.
A small, scared little child.
So no more!
Come outside.
Come ride up high
Away from that anger you
Try so hard to hide.
From this new vantage point,
See, open your eyes, and
Let heaven and earth collide.

Moving target
Bekah Halle Apr 30
I've just noticed,
as I looked up from writing poetry,
A magpie purchased on the high back
of one of my outdoor setees,
Staring smack at me
as I sculpt words.
Fixed, it holds itself still, measured.
Scheming its next swoop;
Taking in my features,
I was a moving target.

Kiss Me!
Bekah Halle Jul 19
When I was younger,
I kissed a lot —

I mean many, many lips...

I kissed in dares,
Men with hair
and without.

I kissed in hiding places behind trees,
In dark movie theatres,
In sunshine and under deep blue water...

Oh, the places my lips have been.
Breathless pants,
mouthing moans at just a glance...

Oh yeah, I've been there!

And what about the inappropriate kisses?! Trauma kisses from people you trusted; my History teacher, when he took me up to the Monument one day after school,
we sat there in his car, stroking my hand, he leaned in and took it way too far...
Eventually, I moved away and we "lost touch"
But I still think about it...and moving home, I often wonder if I will ever see him walking somewhere near?

But as I've matured,
and become more discriminating...discerning --
I've run out of kissing stories to tell.

They now feel like the lips of a princesses waiting in the tower
Waiting for the kiss from her prince --

I long for a kiss --
that takes my breath away...
This poem wrote itself and came from somewhere deep within. I did not start out to write about my History teacher, it just came to me...timing? Closure? I hope so!

Lest We Forget
Bekah Halle Apr 24
Lest we forget
Those who served us so,
Now, with heavenly angels,
Alive now, they teach us what we sow,
Shall remain forevermore or wasteless fodder.

We shall not forget them so,
Sacrifice, selflessness, valour undertow,
Remembrance of our heroes,
Provokes us to live now, lives of valour; value.

Thirst for coffee
Bekah Halle Jul 30
I was a late bloomer
To coffee, introduced via
The slow progression
From hot chocolate,
Advancement to a latte with two;
Latte with one,
Then a flat white!

Each transition marked a significant life succession;
Graduation from High School,
The first time I kissed a girl,
Waking up from the coma,
My first house purchase —

(Not that I was aware of the deeper meaning at the time)

Coffee became my driving force; searching out new experiences, cafes around the country and overseas —

Each time I held a cup
In my hand,
I was holding myself —
And my dreams, grand
Some spoken, many not
Even dared.

The thirst became a daily ritual,
Transforming my inner reflective space
As I too matured,
Softened, shaped by life and grace.

Reawaken
Bekah Halle May 2024
Open your eyes, and
Come out from the darkness.
12 years have passed,
I’ve forgotten you from long ago.
I am sorry for dismissing you,
Now, I want to put you on show.
12 years, since the coma,
Wake up, and
Live.
Now. Go,
Breathe.
You can do it,
The journey is not over,
It's only begun.
Each new day is a new life,
You can now sleep, knowing there’s more to come.
On this day, 12 years ago, I woke up from a 40-day coma, after a stroke during a brain aneurysm operation. 12 years has been a long time, and I've regained a lot of function but complete healing still hasn't happened, yet. Still hoping.

Clone stamps don’t exist,
Heaven's kiss only breathes originals.
But when darkness overwhelms,
It’s hard to embrace lovingly,
The slump of a body,
The shadowy figure,
The shallow intimacy it gives out,
So they are overlooked, not seen, not valued.
Commodity is an exchange price,
And if your invaluable tag has been ripped off,
Who can speak of your true value?
Back to the breath.
Recreation can commence for the adventurous,
New life with wisdom,
How ripe a red wine will that drop be?

Power of the Pen
Bekah Halle Apr 2024
Word wranglers wound up together,
in an Exchange at a Hotel.
One said this, others said that...
And many a flute of fizz gulped and guzzled while sat
in between giggles and gazes, as
The past was pulled, kicking and screaming, into the present.
Was it a gift?
Were past pains put to peace?
Or did it awaken promises long forgotten,
Once under the authority of the surgeons' scalpel?

Shakespeare wrote, “The pen is mightier than the sword.”
Solomon, in Proverbs, posed that the power
of life and death is in the tongue;
Words create worlds, said I to thousands of teenagers over the years,
Whether written or spoken words liberate or load us up.
This power is with us every minute of every day in every hour.
Will I write new words with my wieldy weapon whence today?
Will wild blossoms bloom in your heart or
Weeds wither the hope in your womb?

Death always steals the show,
But it is joy that jump-starts it.
Entering within, re-wiring love,
Breathing new life, with new words;
Remembering promises
Of a powerful and plentiful future;
Declaring death dead and life to be lived!
The Exchange Hotel in Sydney is a place I used to frequent as a budding PR Exec. With this poem, I declare love to be released, and again risking heart-fully.
I love Australia,
And its road signs:

“Beware of jumping ‘roos!’
"Crocs crossings,"

Or

“Slow-moving echidnas,”

And,

"Big belly black snakes" masquerading as lines.

Bekah Halle Nov 2024
How can we blindspot traumas and tragedies; wars?
But when consumed with ourselves,
our daily ‘stories’ and chores
We take our eyes off the sacred,
on to the trivial, but today they’re on Yours.
We remember the lives lost in conflict;
Lives lost in efforts for peace.
We remember and our praise we do not restrict!
I tremble at the thought of 40+ wars
Currently raging around the world at large,
May peace and forgiveness conquer despite our many collective flaws.

the birds in the sky
Bekah Halle Apr 28
The birds tell a story,
Of what we humans do.
Their chirps and their tweets,
Are confirmation of who and what we knew.

Though we may not see
It, their eyes scan the skies.
And other varieties capture
our uncommunicated idiosyncracies.

The birds in the sky,
Test the temperature of our times.
They hold our secrets,
And much more importantly, our lies.

And so shall I.
Bekah Halle Oct 2024
Is poetry found in our blood
or squeezed out in sweat and tears?
Is it a talent that only the fortunate
get? Or liberation of our fears?
Can one hone it with practice,
Or give up now and change gears?
Then, is poetry for the anxious
perfectionist that nitpicks through the tears?
Maybe it's for the one,
Who is curious, observes and leers?
If it were just talent, then I'd be overlooked
And if it was sheer hard work, I'd lax my jeers
Because I lack the patience.
For me, the Spirit of creativity shoots out words like spears.

As solid as a sandcastle
Bekah Halle Jul 11
Some men
get knocked down far too easily.
They're as solid
as a sandcastle when the air is breezy.

Are we now a world
where our values do not matter?
They beg for coin,*
but deliver poisonous words that shatter --

I am not a "man hater"
I am desperate to find,
Men who can stand the test of time,
And know and whence speak their mind --

But all I see are puppets --
tied to the TikTok
Of public opinion that changes every season,
dancing to the worthless tune run amok --
*likes, swipes, views - we are all hustling for something.

despite the pains and trials,

I'd prefer to be.

I know my scars,
and idiosyncrasies,
they're frustrating
to no end,
but then, that's me.
I ain't living in squalla
But supernatural, techno colour;

Back here on my wooden deck,
I throw back a whiskey, with lime, check √

I hear a banjo in the back of my mind,
And smell fire burning in time.

Recipe books surround and cake rests on my outdoor table,
Country living could very well be it's label...

But I see it as "God’s waiting room" --

Mowers murmur in neighbours' lawns,
Buzzing bees and billowy butterflies
circumnavigate newly planted trees,
make me yawn like a pawn.

In these moments I lean back and let my soul bloom.

And I'd stay up til early.

Restraining

There's something
paradoxical
about restraining,
saying no,
when everything in you
wants to say yes,
everything in you wants
to go get,
everything in you wants
to consume
And then you pause and
wait
And it passes.
Is that the power of restraint?

The controller
Bekah Halle Nov 2024
The controller sits in her tower,
Blasting down commands:
Do this, and do that,
Reverberating are her demands.
How to calm her bellow? I ponder.
How did she get so loud?!
But then, sometimes it's so subliminal,
Her messages that silence the proud.
Silence is deathly, it kills life when left unchecked,
Is it peaceful or suffocating?
Is it healing or is it a tragedy?
Can I change? Or is this how she'll be for the duration?
I have hope in you oh Lord,
That you will calm the controller.
I have trust in you, oh Lord,
But I just have to let out this holler...

But by noon I am worn ragged by the duel.

And try to conjure truth: I am blessed.
Releasing all that stands contrary,
Reminding myself; I am hesed, crowned with righteousness.
In this busy world, saturated with messages of unworthiness, we need to stop and remind ourselves of the truth: we are loved and adored; fearfully and wonderfully made.

And you are the Son.
