Fascination with Light
by Michael R. Burch

Desire glides in on calico wings,
a breath of a moth
seeking a companionable light,

where it hovers, unsure,
sullen, shy or demure,
in the margins of night,

a soft blur.

With a frantic dry rattle
of alien wings,
it rises and thrums one long breathless staccato

and flutters and drifts on in dark aimless flight.

And yet it returns
to the flame, its delight,
as long as it burns.

I am not a moth
but I fly to other flames
moths do not feel shame

A light soft flutter
Faithfully carried a moth
Intent on escape

She flew quite softly
Through the light and to the moon
Left the world behind

Flying by and by
Only to see what awaits
Across the night sky

Imp boy
What big brown eyes you have
How I wonder what they've seen
What they have passed
So small, so somber
Your aura, I ponder
You simmer in silence
You observe your table
I see that tension, cumber
Built behind your gable
Am I concerned
I'm just in awe
I'm a snow moth attracted
To a dark imp boy, of all...

Bright white, blinding,
lost in a sea of light.
Radar no longer functioning,
then suddenly intense, murderous heat
scorching legs and wings.

Trying to navigate a way out
they watch from the bed,
lost in its own Bermuda Triangle.

He is fascinated - how stupid
a creature can be to **** itself
on a light bulb.

She, understanding the distraction
of the light, sheds a tear
for how love hurts
and destroys you in the end.

A massive moth outside in the night
Flings itself at
My bathroom window.
Another Icarus
Sorely tempted by the electric light within
My house.

A swooping vulture
It tries again and again,
Fracturing its fragile wings:
Battering itself to exhaustion.

Perhaps it curses some Moth God
And feels a failure in life,
Totally frustrated
At not being able to reach its imperative goal.
Not knowing
That had it succeeded
It would now be
Incinerated.

Moth or butterfly?
It isn't the caterpillar that decides
I'd be a moth
