I used to spend hours looking down
At the thousands of small critters
I used to look at the caterpillars
Checkered, bristle-covered enveloped bodies
As they roamed the soil for growth

A breeze, a storm
Enough to flood the land
The caterpillars gasped for air
Lost, alone.

But the sun struggled through
The storms calmed
And the caterpillars emerged from the water
Ready to fly,
Ready to metamorphosize.

Now I look up, up to the sky
and I finally see
Momentary beauty, splendid nonetheless:
Purple wings glistening through the wind.

That’s what I aspire to be.
"I'm graduating"
Mansi Apr 2020
I graduated from
university today

I want to thank my parents,
My friends, and everyone else
Who helped me to get here

But most of all I want to thank
My past selves for not giving up
Despite everything

This achievement is dedicated
to the
10 year old who continued on
Despite not knowing what tomorrow looked like
To the
16 year old who lost sleep thinking
About the future
And what it holds

Girls,
By God's grace
We made it!
I'm sure one day
I'll be thanking
my 22 year old self
As well!
I can't believe I'm done! I wrote this poem 2 months ago when things didn't seem this severe. So now it feels anti climatic due to COVID but regardless I'm happy I'm done. I have no idea what future is going to bring but I'm sure it will be okay, eventually.

468 days till I'm out of this place
468 days till I graduate
468 days till I'm out of this space
468 days till I escape

This place that brought me rules to follow
This place that brought me expectations to exceed
This place that brought me wishes to fulfill
This place that brought me dreams to give up

This place that consistently tells me that I must act prim and proper
This place that consistently tells me that I must have perfect grades
This place that consistently tells me that I must be involved in activities
This place that consistently tells me that I must stand out

Stand out
Stand out but not in bad way
Let your voice be heard, but don’t speak too loud
Show your curves, but not too much because that degrades you
Be smart, but don’t be nerdy, dorky or quirky

This place that brought me tests every other week
This place that brought me heartaches and headaches
This place that brought me back stabs and betrayal
This place that brought me all nighters to makeup for my lazy group mates

This place that consistently tells me that I must not ***** up
This place that consistently tells me that I must not waste my time
This place that consistently tells me that I must not have too much fun
This place that consistently tells me that I must not have infatuations

Infatuation
Infatuation is just an observation with a cost
Love your friends but don’t get too close
Have hobbies but don’t waste too much time doing them instead of studying
Befriend everyone but not with any guys

This place that brought me tears
This place that brought me fears
This place that brought me cries
This place that brought me lies

But i might miss this

468 days till im going to miss this place
468 days till i graduate
468 days till i miss this space
468 days till i miss this place i underrate

This place that brought me inside jokes and goofy smiles
This place that brought me song lyrics and theater performances
This place that brought me fundraisers and field trips
This place that brought me late night conversations on calls

This place that constantly reassures me that I am not useless
This place that constantly reassures me that I am not what others define me as
This place that constantly reassures me that I am not unworthy of what i tried so hard to achieve
This place that constantly reassures me that I am doing well for someone who’s only seventeen

Seventeen
Seventeen might be too young
Too young but i know what i feel is real
All the nights talking about everything about nothing
The birthday gifts we shower each other with

This place that brought me happiness
This place that brought me those brown eyes and freckles on his smile
This place that brought me boys now we call ex
This place that brought me valuable lessons

This place that constantly reassures me that I don’t need man to be happy
This place that constantly reassures me that I am beautiful no matter what others think
This place that constantly reassures me that I will be alright
This place that constantly reassures me that I will be ready for when I leave

Leave
All we ever talk about is leaving
Run away, as far away from home
Can’t wait to get out, but soon I would look for every excuse to return
Just wanna run away but keep coming back to this place

This place

This place that brought me memories
This place that brought me laughter and joy
This place that brought me friends and love
No other place like this

Every tick of the clock, every stroke,
reminds me of how fast each moment passes.
The days drip and the present
Becomes the past.

Time ebbing away,
And every window that opens up
is another opportunity that arises..
With every milestones cleared,
we retell tales with confidence;
About that time-
The times which still felt so far ahead.
All the struggles and
Rushing time,
to beat the eleventh hour.

We are all still a work in progress.

Looking back at those
years of growth,
bittersweet moments-
unforgettable memories we’ve made
Will be the friends that we had
And the way they made us laugh
So as for the memories and good times,
These will be the ones kept
so dearly to our hearts.

You’ve always been there,
In the room next to mine.
I’d pound on our bathroom door,
Running out of time.

We’d yell at each other,
Screaming and fighting.
I sat through all your baseball games,
Even in lightning.

You’d play guitar for me,
I would sing.
Your music has always been my inspiration,
Its helped me to play my own strings.

Everyone loved you,
You could do it all.
From chess to sports to school,
You’d never drop the ball.

I used to be jealous of you,
Everything you could do.
It took far too long for me to realize,
It was only because I looked up to you.

Soon you’ll be leaving,
Going away.
Soon I’ll hardly see you,
Only on holidays.

I can’t remember our ages,
When “I hate you” became “I love you.”
I don’t know why we’ve changed,
But I’m glad we both grew.

So maybe as you conquer the world,
I’ll be seeing you less and less.
But I’ll think of you everyday,
Never with a second guess.

You won’t be there anymore,
In the room next to mine.
But I’ll always love you as my brother,
Regardless of city lines.

School is nearly run out,
Will you sign my yearbook?

The outside world in the rear-view mirror
Is closer than it appears,
And I'm getting scared.

What of all our tomorrows?
What will they bring?

For now, let's go steady.

One last kick & cheer for the crowd.
One last ditch from third period.
One last lockdown drill,

Just in case we end up under the gun...
NOT AGAIN!

*to all the tomorrows that never came*

A wise man once told
"Nothing"
I listened to his silence

Then the same man told
"Write what you feel”
I obeyed

Journey has never been a straight line yet we need to be okay with that. We expect something, something is there waiting for us to happen. Still our effort is to make life as smooth as we can. We plan, we work, we understand, we stay cautious, but we have to move on.

After all we learn.
And we don’t see things the way we used to.
Life is not always a movie with a happy ending.
If so, then why can't we believe death as a graduating time?

The end of us.
