Whenever the sweet-scented
calyx of palm collects the blue
midday sun in your hair, I sit
passing time in the moon’s
phases and listen to the roaring
silence of thousands of fireflies.

Lonely and cold,
I wait for love
beside the frosted window
while dreams of fireflies
sparkle in the snow.
I sip black coffee
from my mug, quietly,
so I don't wake them...

Because I know when summer comes
I’ll have found someone
and I want to make sure they're all well rested
so they can swirl around my lover and me
when our soft lips spark
for the first time
like flint,
so I can watch them drown out
in that new lovelight
that'll glow furiously when dusk
cinders into darkness.

But for now
I'll have to deal with the darkest months
alone
while they lay on the lawn
asleep under the moon
with beautiful dreams.

When I was fourteen, and your eyes locked with mine
Like I was the only one you saw in a crowded room.

When you held my hand for the first time
And I got so many butterflies my stomach physically hurt.

When we counted the stars in my backyard,
And you told me you loved me under the glow of the moon.

When we chased fireflies on an early summer evening
And I wished you would always love me when the bug flew from my fingertip...

I’ve never felt more alive than I did in these moments.

Before I’d been broken
More than my fair share of times,
Before the scars healed over,
And became part of my soul,

I loved without fear,
                                  Without regret,
                                                          Without conscience,
                                                                                        Without holding back.

And I think maybe that’s why
My heart will always have a place for you...

Because you take me back to a time
When the most bitter taste in my mouth
Came after I said, “See you tomorrow”
When I dreamt about the sea because it reminded me of your eyes.

You take me back
To when I loved with my whole, beating heart
Instead of a ******, mangled mess.
And because of that,

I’ll never stop loving the thirteen year old boy
Who showed me what it meant to love
And I’ll never stop
Dreaming of the sea.
Maybe I meant nothing to you, but you meant everything to me.

It was raining really hard,
I’m standing under an empty shed
And the sky wasn’t starred,
Seems like all the lights were dead

You came under the umbrella,
With your face neither happy nor sad
I looked up hoping to see the Capella,
But still the sky seemed mad

Slowly, I glanced at you,
I caught you staring at me
Then the wind hardly blew,
The freezing rain fell free

Suddenly, the shower stopped
You smiled, I blushed
Overwhelmed, my gaze dropped,
And everything around hushed

Then lights started flickering,
I thought they were the stars
But no, they weren’t shimmering,
The fireflies were ours

The night is young
It leaves a pain in my chest
Fireflies flutter around
Brightening their own lives

Without even realizing

My words will forever
Be lost in the wind
But what I feel in my heart
The dreams I've dreamt

They are yours, and yours forever

My hands in my pocket
Would forever be around you
If they could
But you need not worry, my love

*For you're forever my firefly

Heavy with dew the branches converge
And when it is night these creatures emerge

With diligence they saunter through crevices of flesh
And feed upon bewilderment wherever it’s left

While the moon jeers at the sun for attempting to hide
Hymns of laughter and silhouettes of creatures collide

They flourish the sky with a euphoric light
And cast a spell amongst the silence of night

The creatures thrash against skin to announce their goodbyes
But what shall we call them? We shall call them fireflies

Take me down to the seashore;
It's days like these
When I just want to take a break,
Stop being who I should be for just a moment
And take a walk along the beach.

Take me down to the seashore,
Roll up our pants and saunter along the coastline,
The breakers crashing against our feet.
The seagulls calling our names.

Take me down to the seashore,
We'll sit in the silt until the sun goes down,
We'll watch the fireflies weave a tapestry amongst the stars,
And bury our toes in the sand,
Hand in hand.
new thoughts
bounce around my mind
as fireflies did
when I used to lie awake
the sky-light opening
the star-light showing
and ice-wind blowing
as I took a breath
and believed all was right.
