Death Consciousness
Tanisha Jackland Oct 2016
Ghosts of mortal consciousness
plague those of us
who presume dying is for the dead
While the lack of depth
dominant in breath
ensures the weary bones
of our deception

Tanisha Jackland Dec 2017
Sit there and watch
the power of the moon
feel how you are moved
by Her
your blood at her mercy
Watch the tides and learn
to surface when it is safe
enough to breathe
wax with Her
and wane with Her
learn to swim with the
mutable tides
of your existence
navigate these hours
by Her
then see the bounty
of the moon spill into your life
"The moon is a loyal companion." -Mafi

Once Lost
Tanisha Jackland May 2016
I’ve searched the evening tides for you
the seams of you in dreams
My pixie rose plucked for petals

It was in the distance of you that fed me
As if you could satisfy the insatiable

To relish in the depth of this oblivion
How sweet the spell comes

I could barely hear the wailing
Your body broken in delicate moments
Drifting from me like a pretty ghost

Here you are again
My favorite lonely one
Dispelling the void between us

shot thru my veins

Or is it just the lie

If you could swim inside this womb
to take a warm slow bath in the blood,
I’d piece together those moments
of borrowed flesh

I am conjurer crafting
water from stagnant air and
I eat fire to rinse my bones
clean of the soot

I have risen from insolvent wing
to remake the dead into eternal things
I have birthed the big bang with the
Friction of my lips

Some of the dead have been named
And shot through the roots
to live on deciduous

I am city no doubt
love the safe haven
of instability
and fast-moving cars
no room for death
There was a time
I was connected to the bracken
to the brooks and the wide open
fields filled with flowers
from the pages of yore
Nature spoke to me
the forest whisperer
I was in an enchanted land
created by me
I took refuge there
youth shielding me
from apathetic eyes
at the lonely black

Pave your heart

Where are the wild
Things compelling you
to search your own Sun
and the stray wind that
will carry you home

We cannot live on cement alone
Though we’ve covered
the Earth with toxic stones
that do not breathe
And trash that will never perish

It may be our undoing
What we’ve done to ourselves
To die upon this heap
To suffer the bloodstains

“You wander from room to room
Hunting for the diamond necklace

― Rumi

I thought it was over

whispers from eternity
told me different
how I could feel
your presence
in the room
like you came from
the womb of space
to let me know
that from destruction

unseen but real
luminous and deep

The Dead Look
Tanisha Jackland Dec 2015
It’s the beautiful ones who
Always give us
This dead look

They offer up
those piercing long
gone eyes to search you
For any soul that they may
Have left

And it is a cold vengeance
They’re hunting for
To steal from you
The lost thing
That never made them
human anyway

I’m afraid I may catch it somehow
The frosty vacant look
That tells me that I’m on my way out
And yet they are already gone…

*But instead, i send you the

The lit ether will open up and

Our connection
is ancient
Her nature being
fluid and female
"Be gentle"
She says as still
as stone
She gathers the ripples
from her slow movement
encouraging me
to speak my truth
with intention
and soft conviction
"Ask and you shall receive"

She tells us many things
the spirit of water
but we are too
loud to listen
speak to her softly
protect her
She is the life force
that will heal us
before it is too late
May we protect water everywhere.

Underneath It All (revised)
Tanisha Jackland Jul 2017
Whatever has torn up the room
has sat on your mother's
back breaking her

but you look the other way
too painful to see
what's already in your face
a lynching here a shooting there

It's not me you say
and shrug it all away
I didn't steal anybody you said
but tortured bodies wailed
underneath the crack
of your ancestor's whip
and still you reap from
the ghosts of yesterday

don't you hear them
the black lipped rage
that keeps yelling at you

but still you look the other way
and sip your latte
with a deafening smirk upon
your face as if you are not
one of us

human

This is not a plea for reparations
yet it would be a wise gesture
nor a begging for a hand out
yet it would serve you to be kinder

It may be futile to you
to look a black person in the eye
with the truth on your tongue
but if we can't save you
then maybe underneath it all
nobody could
it's never too late to be kind and give back what is due. Peace.
