He sheds his serpent skin
Only to regenerate a thicker version
Of emotionally unavailable armor,
While drinking his bourbon.
Baylee Kaye Mar 2018
she was a snake,
discarded and diseased.
she crept into my mind,
wrapped herself around my being,
and suffocated me.

her coils embedded into my independence.
her poison polluted my blood.
she climbed up my throat and came from my mouth,
And soon she had me by the neck.

I gasped for my breath,
yet it had fled from me.
dry tears poured like a river,
and my mouth was filled with fear.

I pulled my arms to me tightly,
my body trembling with pain.
she now had me wrapped in her cruelty,
and like this I would stay.
to keep it short, this is about my abusive ex friend. we were friends for two years, hence the title “730+”
Clive Blake Mar 2018
What a great reptile,
A Royal Python - no less,
A serpent so dapper;
Never seen in a mess,
Non-poisonous, deaf, mute;
Except for its hiss,
It likes nothing more
Than to hug and to kiss!

Though it has no arms,
Harmless it is not,
Make no mis-snake a
Mean streak it has got,
Outside of its coils
The view is just fine,
But if invited inside
You'd be wise to decline!

Don't be enticed in
By its hypnotic stare,
For when those coils tense,
They act like a snare,
For those patterned coils;
Look brill' from without,
But lose their appeal
When wrapped
Around your snout!
Amanda Kay Burke Mar 2018
Look at what you have done to me
And the things I've written
It seems to me you are the snake
I'm the one who's bitten

Your poison seeps around my words
Twists until they are burned
With my unhappy memories
The painful lessons that I've learned

The effect this has on me
Sinks right to the core
Now all because of you
I cannot write about love anymore
This is one from a loong time ago. There is no date so it has to be pre-2010 but I am surprised at how good it is
Grace Melby Mar 2018
He slithered on the ground towards me
“I want you”
“You’re beautiful”
He’s at my feet begging me to look into those hypnotizing eyes
“You’re perfect for me”
“I love you”
He wraps himself around my knees keeping them from shaking
“You make me a better person”
“You complete me”
He is coiled around my thighs making me feel stable
“I need you”
“Never leave me”
He’s wound around my stomach giving me the façade of butterflies
“You’re mine”
“You’re nothing without me”
He wraps around me tighter
slithering up around my neck making it hard to breathe
“You’ve changed”
“You’re weak”
And as he moves on to his next victim
The venom he injected into my veins
Makes me want him to want me all over again.
Kendall Seers Mar 2018
Dangerous words are the ones that slip
under our guard.
They nestle next to us at night,
and whisper treacle-sweet nothings
that trickle and slide down canals
to a dosing mind, honeying the way.
They want to ensure easy passage
for the poison kept still at bay.

They tuck us in,
fluff our pillows and our egos,
till we give them freely
those moments of sincerity.
All those genuine smiles and hitched breaths,
we suppose their value
was in their exclusivity.

We break off these pieces of truth
like our hearts are homemade chocolate,
and hand them over in pretty gift wrap.

It’s when these snakes have us so charmed
and they are sated,
that they finally snap and spit.

Their bites are full of venom,
and we see their fangs too late.
Edited version of an old poem.
BC Jaime Mar 2018
He said
          “You’re a bear.”

I said
          “No, I’m a fish.
          Two fish, actually
          Swimming
          in opposite directions
          One tells me: Do it!
          The other says: Oh no
          you betta don’t!”

He said
          “No. You’re a bear.”

I said
          “No. Actually,
          I’m a monkey.
          A crazy, funny monkey
          who can pick up stuff
          with his toes
          then wonder when
          I’ll evolve
(Even my pops used to call
          me his 'little monkey'.)”

He said
          “Just face it.
          YOU.
          ARE.
          A.
          BEAR.”

I said
          “I beg to differ,
          I am a night owl
          that stares at stars
          or watches Friends
          reruns in the wee hours
          of the morning.
          Ask me a question
          I’ll show you how
          wise I am.”

He said
          “Do you know that
          you are a bear?”

I said
          “Nope. I’m a snake.
          I have tremendous
          sympathy for others,
         great depth of perception
          Am intense, passionate,
          determined,
          at times, headstrong.”

He said
“But, you are also a bear.
          A hairy bear.”

I said
          “Fine. I’m a bear.
          Are you happy?
          I’m grumpy, lumbering
          & hate bees.
          I’m hairy,
          I hibernate.
          I.
          Am.
          A. Bear.”

(after a taste
          of honey)

I said
          “And what are you
          Hmmm…?”

He said
          “I’m an otter.
          hairy & cute
          just like you
          Now, give me your paw
          Let’s go splash
          around in the river.”

This anger slithers up to me
From across the room
I am helpless as it sinks it’s fangs
Right into my heart.
This is the violent anger.
The anger that boils my blood,
The anger that makes me want to tear my own skin off,
The anger that makes me want to break all the mirrors in my room and play in the glass.
This is also the anger that makes me want to punch you in the chest, so you can feel that pain just like I did,
This is the anger that makes me want to hit you in the stomach so you throw up, just like I did at 3 am, and 6 am, and again and again even though there was nothing there to begin with.
This anger leaves me clawing at my own skin
Chewing my lips until they bleed
Biting my fingernails until there is nothing but blood in my mouth.
But as this anger dissipates,
I remember why I could never hurt you
And I remember that hurting me is hurting you too
I don’t want to hurt you
