Was your child born to hate mine?
We keep living in the past
Why plant it in a new garden
Will it be the same as the last?

Our mistakes must be paid
We have given them the bill
But let their hearts be debt-free
Because hatred can only ****

Don't run away from me
Don't assume I am the same
I want to know your heart
Will you only point at me in blame?

If you must tell me so
Then I will turn the other cheek
I am only human my friend
I am not the perfection you seek
Today another human
was buried in the dirt,
and other humans gathered round,
and cried because it hurt.
And nothing in the time that he
had spent upon this earth,
could, in those tear-filled mourners' eyes,
diminish that man's worth.

No label he had ever worn
could sway their human hearts.
With no conditions, they loved him,
the sum of all his parts.
Now under six cold feet of ground,
he lies before his time.
And other humans wonder if
the sentence fit the crime.

Another human was his mom,
another was his dad.
Some others still had been his friends
since he was just a lad.
They had laughed and cried with him,
been true through thick and thin.
Now they've thrown handfuls on the box
they buried the man in.

Now the streets are burning-
other humans, filled with rage,
lash out at OTHER humans,
with the city as their stage.
Man and woman, boy and girl,
bear witness what you're seeing-
the aftermath of the wrongful death
of another human being.
Apologies if I've previously shared this here.  Written in 2015 following the bedlam in Ferguson, MO.

I'm enveloped with-
Shotgunned lovers on the avenues
That no one gave a **** about
Kin of the lovers live on the news
Ape-**** on the hood of their cars
For balloons of views to peruse
Sirens burning in the bushes
Hearts rattling in the noose
Bonds shining like the sun
Religion is in need of roots
The concrete is stuffed too full
Because we're jumping roofs

the dutch colony ascended on our shores
replacing traditional african education on culture
with teaching slaves how to pray

we saw the deterioration of black schools
and state-mandated segregated curricula
whites being taught better than blacks
who was only destined for subservient jobs

policies of apartheid birthed the bantu education
and later forced us to learn languages
which was not our native tongue
the youth could no longer be silenced
soweto uprising saw them dying for the cause

we have protested throughout the decades
silenced by the apartheid government
simply ignored

with Mandela’s release we saw liberation, freedom, democracy
and a single education system, we were finally equal
however the legacy of black inferior education left a deep scar
which has still not healed
our parents not able to give us the education they were denied

now students are holding the government accountable
who promised free education for a vote
the movement trending as #feesmustfall

anger expressed by burning premises, striking and rioting
i believe in the cause but who are you really hurting?
why destroy the very universities that you are fighting for?

We're headed for a deep, deep valley
Poison sky in Tornado Alley
We had best not dilly-dally
Our Creator's got a running tally

"What's that list?" You may ask?
Well. What's that blood within your flask?
Amantalado's got a cask
While in luxury we bask

Amerika, Amerika!
Wearing tight blue jeans
You've lost your fight,
you've lost your might
You live beyond your means!

Amerika, Amerika!
You'd best buckle up!
Ask God's pardon!
Grow a garden!
'Coz you are out of luck!

Do you know they use CHILDREN?
Little girls & boys!
They cut their tiny fingers
While making all your toys!

There are those who aren't so Slack
At sitting on a donkey's back
Haul Coco leaves to make your crack
So politicians make a stack
While these peasants live in shacks

And here on the homefront....

Pregnant mothers will not cry
While their unborn babies die
They swallow the hook... Believe the lie
Just want their piece of the pie
And then roll their eyes and sigh
When told of Jesus... my oh my...

What happened to the Golden Rule?
Horrible bullying in schools!
Prayer no more used than stone-age tools
Non believers stubborn mules
Christian's made to look like fools!

As our Spirits atrophy
While we think that we are free
Each day a new catastrophe...
... The IRS still has its fee

We walk into the Serpent's Maw
He likes his meat ****** and raw
While the Ravens creak and caw

We Institute Sharia law!

Wealth is meant only for a few
Do-as-i-say-not-as-i-do
Folks! They are a Motley Crew!
This is not the place I knew!

DOES ALL THIS GARBAGE WORK FOR YOU?

Here's a message. It is TRUE!

WE ARE MANY... they are FEW!!!

Please allow me to be bold
This BS is getting old!
Break the *******! Break the mold!

'Cuz folks, you're being mind-controlled!

It's coming in from your PC
It's coming in from your TV
You are fed false history!
You're NOT SMARTER! YOU'RE NOT FREE!

AND YOU'LL MISS YOUR DESTINY!

Back to God's list. He's checking it twice.
Amerika... are you naughty or nice?
You're marinated in your vice!
Hear this message! Hear my voice!

'Cause pretty soon

YOU'LL HAVE NO CHOICE.

Oh, please hear me! I may offend
But it is out of love my friend!
I don't expect this work to trend
I will click and just press "send"

I wish you only blessing.

THE END.

We all have flesh and bone
We have a spine that stands *****
10 fingers and 10 toes.
What difference does our color make?
Our plethora of tones?
How often do we cross the street
When a black one comes?
Ignore the coming thunder clouds
Ignore the coming storm?
Ignore those shot upon the street
Can you hear their groans?
How often do we look on race?
How can we atone?

When will we come out of sleep!
Wake up and see the sight!
You think you're kind... but you are blind!
In ignorance... in night!
Black lives matter! ALL LIVES MATTER!
Why do we have to fight?!!
Just because you wear a badge
Doesn't mean you're right!
What's all this that I hear about
A broken tail light?
I am named... I am ashamed

BECAUSE MY SKIN IS WHITE!!!

The other day I saw a young college kid (white) cross the street because he saw a couple of black kids coming his way. I know that's why he went on to the other side of the street. You can just tell that sort of thing, right?

And today I heard about the black man who was shot by a police officer. I don't remember how many times... Does it matter? Dead is dead. He was pulled over for a broken tail light. I just can't get over it. This sort of violence is going to create race riots. They've already started.

WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE, FOLKS! It'll soon be on your doorstep.

I'm frankly ashamed of the color of my own skin. And roles will be reversed. Watch and see if I'm not right.

There's only ONE race in God's eyes.
THE HUMAN RACE!

Bell bottom hip huggers
And my Frankenstein shoes
That had stack soles and heels
That I could only barely use.
A crop-top sleeveless tee shirt
With a superman emblem on it
And diamond ring on my hand.
In case I might have to pawn it.

Because we were picketing
Downtown at the City Hall
And at some police stations.
It was the seventies after all.
Our parents raised us to acquiesce
It was their America they protected.
And it was just exactly this blindness
That we, en masse, all rejected.

We failed to understand them
The generations that came before
That prized prejudice and bias
And celebrated sending us to war.
We felt there was another way
To go about sweeping social change.
We saw beating and fire hosing
As nefarious and more than strange.

We got beaten ourselves and jailed
For just pointing injustice out to them
And watched our sit-ins and love-ins
Turned into scenes of ****** mayhem.
We heard them call us all criminals,
Long haired ******* was a favored taunt.
It seems we were entitled to our opinions
As long as we didn’t chose to flaunt.

It felt so very much like **** Germany
Including storm troopers and jack boots
And the local politicians were obviously
At least agreeing if not in cahoots
With the police in their fear of rebellion
And protecting their good paying jobs.
So, they beat us and vilified the students
Calling them ***** communists, and slobs.

And, yes, some of us were getting high
Back in our homes and apartments.
Sometimes it seemed the only way
We could deal with the estrangement
Between what our country said it was
And what it turned out it really was.
It was hard to realize our land wasn’t free
And there was no social Santa Claus.
Peter Balkus Nov 2015
What have we done wrong?
Why us?
We didn't vote,
we didn't rule,
we didn't lie.

We live in a stable,
not in a palace.
We don't eat caviar,
only hay and grass.

We didn't riot,
we didn't shout,
we didn't say a word,
so why they killed us?

Because we live in a stable,
and because we don't lie.
Because we didn't say a word,
that's why.
