It's up to you what's wrong or right.
It's up to you whether you want to fight or go quietly into the night.
It's up to you whether you want to take this life by the *****
or fall in line behind the wall.
This is your life.
Your body.
You have the power to choose.
Whatever you decide,
it's up to you

They told you "Careful"
Because they saw the frozen eyes.
Friends warned you
Because they knew the burning mind.
The people hissed
Because they saw the iron wall.
They all left
Because they tried to invade.
Your friends said "Watch out"
Because they felt its icy stare.
The people frowned
Because they all knew the cold retorts.
The people watched
Because they couldn't fight.
You said hello
Because you were afraid.
And suddenly
The lion shed its mane.

Every hit you gave me when I was a child
grew to hate as I got older.
Every lie you told me when I was trusting
grew to disgust as I got wiser.
Every bad word you threw at me,
every betrayal, every bit of spite,
I used it to build a wall between us.
A wall that keeps you out.
A wall that keeps me safe.

I would really like to throw it all back at you.
To hurt you with everything you hurt me with.
To crush you like you crushed me.

But then I wouldn't be any better,
then I would be you.
I'll never be you!

i feel like I'm stripping my soul
like I'm running around naked and for everyone to see
but in reality I've got on layers of clothing and I need the summer to finally come and set me free

The anxious Toddler,
***** her right thumb;
The News has just ended,
and soon they will come.
~
But they will not lay down,
'neath her Mickey Mouse sheets;
They'll take her pure innocence,
and she'll get no sleep.
~
The things that are done,
to this Child of five;
Will stay with this wee one,
for the rest of her life.
~
When they are finished,
having her their own way;
She hugs the pink walls,
feeling ***** and ashamed,
Child abuse has got to stop!

Not Elves, Exactly
by Michael R. Burch

(after Robert Frost's "Mending Wall")

Something there is that likes a wall,
that likes it spiked and likes it tall,

that likes its pikes’ sharp rows of teeth
and doesn’t mind its victims’ grief

(wherever they come from, far or wide)
as long as they fall on the other side.

You can call me names and make me fall.
But you don't know what I can do when my back's against the wall.
You can mock me and tell me I look like a freak.
But it's okay because these things don't make me weak.
We're all different. So why are we so afraid of how people walk, talk or think?
We're all different. So let's embrace it and have a drink.

Lately, I've been afraid to sleep.
Every time I start to dream,
I'm greeted by a banshee scream.
I find myself running but don't seem to go anywhere.
It feels like I'm on a set of m.c. escher stairs.
Eventually, I end up stumbling and fall.
And when I look up, I see the scariest thing of all.
She showed me a vision of a wall.
Engraved in the stones were all of the words I had been dying to say.
I thought I lost them.
But there they were just a few feet away.
The banshee screamed again and the ground started to shake.
The wall started to crumble and I knew I needed to fight. There was too much at stake.
I closed my eyes and focused on trying to breathe.
Then I started to believe.
I believed in myself.
That I'd find the words again.
And just like that, when I woke up, I found them right where they should have been.
Bottom line, don't be afraid to dream. Because eventually, you will realize everything is not what it seems.
This poem was written after I saw a group post about making a poem where writer's block is something chasing you
