The girl wreathes
the perimeter of her mattress
in salt
that has
fallen
like meteors from her stormy eyes.

Surely,
this ritual
will keep the nightmares away.

But her tears
lack resilience.
lack the necessary sting
of healing
as brine enters wound;

instead,
her tears
are broken compositions
of fragility and sugar--

a spoonful
helps the medicine go down
but cannot antidote
the parasitic demons
hosted by the traumas of her past.

The ocean water is full of course salt
when the water land in my mouth
i can feel the harsh words flushing in my mouth
while me tongue struggles to breathe
she is a friend to many
an enemy to others
i love her a lot
and i seem to not be able to let go of her
though the salt annoys my tongue
i still will swim in the ocean
because deep down i still love her

The Divide
by Michael R. Burch

The sea was not salt the first tide ...
was man born to sorrow that first day,
the moon a pale beacon across the Divide,
the brighter for longing, an object denied,
the tug at his heart's pink, bourgeoning clay?

The sea was not salt the first tide ...
but grew bitter, bitter ... man's torrents supplied.
The bride of their longing forever astray,
her shield a cold beacon across the Divide,
flashing pale signals: "Decide. Decide.
Choose me, or His Brightness, I will not stay."

The sea was not salt the first tide ...
imploring her, ebbing: "Abide, abide."

The silver fish flash there, the manatees gray.

The moon, a pale beacon across the Divide,
has taught us to seek Love's concealed side:
the dark face of longing, the poets say.

The sea was not salt the first tide ...
the moon a pale beacon across the Divide.

NOTE: "The Divide" is essentially a villanelle despite the non-formal line breaks.

don't mistake
salt for sugar
if she wants you
deeply, really wants you
she will cherish you
and when you try to leave
like you always do
she will love you enough to keep you
and tell you to stay.
don't mistake
salt for sugar.

Quiet. Sickeningly quiet.
Watching silhouettes pass outside
While the salt dries to the floor at my feet.

Why am I here, waiting?

clear

glass
of
water.

Crystal clear,
smooth and cool,
it's standing there,
waiting for you.

You take a sip,
waiting for the
moment...

You wince.

What happened?

Where is the cool, crispy, smooth sensation?

Who knew that such an attractive, cool, and clear
glass of water
could be so nasty?

From the outside,
it had looked so good,
so ready.

But it was unknown
that the water
was full of salt.

Similar to water,
we humans are too.

We can look kind and sweet,
but be rude untrue.

Inspired when I unknowingly drank a glass of salty water.

I will drown
in streams of
salt,
running along a glass rim.

Why is there so much sugar
in cake? Why do we never notice
mosquitoes on our skin
until it's too late? How do some
butterflies travel farther
than some birds? How
have you not heard me?

How come an eagle always
soars overhead the minute
my camera dies? How come
it's so easy to lie?

How can the lake look so much
like an ocean, but I
always just look like me?

A cloudy sky offers so much
more than a clear one--
more texture, more tough.
There's not much salt in
Lake Michigan, but
there's probably some, right?
That's gotta be true?

I'm sorry I like you.
