breathe in
the ice cold waters fill my chest
as delicate strings strum in my head

"careful, you'll crack your head open"

careless, my thoughts come pouring out

jump in
unwind and relax
droplets ebb and flow
with a mind of its own

reach out
extend a helping hand
these shallow waters
soak my shoes

laugh
unstrained and wet with tears
living in a daydream
has never felt this real.

a person barely within earshot
may absorb the cheerful ring in my voice.
they see me in glimmering gold
embellished with refracting glass -
always with crinkles adorning my eyes.

someone else may be right across the table
and see small smoke tendrils escaping my ears.
laughter follows the smoke, and it fades away.
they see dull gold topped with smashed glass.
the crinkles sometimes disappear,
only to return a few seconds later.

A few can see my heart whenever they like.
they hear unsteady tremors between words.
they see billowing smoke
emanating from my ears and mouth.
they know the wrapping is gold foil
with smashed hourglasses piercing my skin.
the crinkles appear whenever they want.
nevertheless, they see me rise, even as I ache.

I, the permanent resident of this body,
shed the itchy foil whenever I can.
my cells are clouded by smoke,
and the hourglass fractals
swirl into a tornado behind my sternum.
the crinkles have been starched.

But, I remember I am walking on diamonds,
and I slowly sculpt my armor.
I exhale, and the smoke clears, bit by bit.
I reach behind my sternum,
grabbing the fractals to line my armor.
I splash water onto my face,
and the corners of my eyes crinkle again.
Escapril Day 10! Prompt: magnification. I wanted to "zoom in," to the different ways in which people see me vs. my reality. This is my interpretation of the prompt.
I hope you enjoy this longer poem! I also hope the metaphors make sense. I'm not really sure how I settled on these descriptions, but I made an attempt 😊

I remember how they laughed at my name,
but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at my accent,
but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at me for crying too much,
but I understand now,

I remember how they laughed at me for being afraid of helicopters and planes, but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at my ideas,
but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at me for being too kind,
but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at my poetry,
but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at how I dressed,
but I understand now,

I remember how they laughed at my smile and ****** expressions, but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at how I walked,
but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at how I spoke to girls,
but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at my relationships,
but I understand,
I remember how they laughed at my successes,
but I understand now,
I remember how they laughed at my youth,
but I understand now,

From friends, to teachers, to family, and strangers;
they all laughed at me. But I understand now.

My only regret,
not being able to tell that younger me,
"they'll all laugh at you for being you. But you need to understand, you'll be the one laughing all about them. Let them laugh now, you'll always get the last laugh on them.

I need you to understand now."

22 years old and it's my birthday
an old classic free on streaming
it's worth it to see the look on everyone's face
the whole thing is great,
but one thing I find funny is
like Donald said make em laugh make em laugh make em laugh
what idiot goes singin in the rain
that's a terrible idea but it's entertaining anyway
a silly old movie on a night full of rain
taught me even if they bury you alive
at least you made em laugh

I think, those wrinkles on your face
The ones you want to erase
The ones that appear with every laugh
Are waiting to be shaped
Into musical notes
That form the melody
Of the sound of healing

Someday I will bring this world to its knees for everything that it has done to me.
And while it begs for my forgiveness, I will simply watch as it trembles at the echos of my laugh

I have cried over many muted memories;
agonized over my failings,
watching time pass through a foggy lens.

I thought the wisdom was worth the wait,
the view must be most beautiful at the end.

But when I look at your face,
filled with bright laughter,
your eyes speckled with joy,
I think, Why not laugh this time?
Just once more?

I'll let myself laugh,
carefully at first,
then to you, my voice lets go.

This must be what I was waiting for;
your face filling with a smile,
this ease, this noise.

There's something amiss in my desperate laugh,
A misty, wistful wish, an algid disparate draft,
Finest thread of dread winding its way throughout,
Vines, verdant, spread, binding my hope to doubt,
Booming drum shaking foundations made of sand,
Tinkling of breaking glass creations out of hand,
Spilling out and over, released lest the dam burst,
Consuming as if lover, heedless of best-verse-worst,
Best nightmares, worst dreams, in the end, it's all the same,
Unheard cares and thoughts mean, play the grandest games.
