On that day
I will cast away
the chains of responsibility
like a cruise ship leaving port
to places unknown and far away

On that day
I will relinquish
the title of
good son
and share the load

One that day
I shall let go
of always being in control
allow my inner compass
to lead

On that day
I shall purge
the voices
those demons of my mind
and hear silence

On that day
I will be free
to explore the world
having released the burden
of adulthood

On that day
I will awaken
to find contentment
that place in my heart
where all is good

Someday this
will all be mine

Someday

Happiness is hearing your voice
Happiness is seeing you smile at me
Happiness is your laugh when I say something funny
Happiness is your eyes lighting up when you see a dog
Happiness is you being happy about cute animals
Happiness is playing with your hair
Happiness is having your head on my chest
Happiness is you snuggling up to me
Happiness is hearing you talk about sloths
Happiness is you explaining environmental science to me
Happiness is kissing you on the nose
Happiness is you singing Disney songs
Happiness is holding you in my arms
Happiness is experiencing something new with you
Happiness is making stupid jokes at Barnes and Noble
Happiness is a long drive while holding your hand
Happiness is your lips on mine
Happiness is hearing "I love you" and saying it back
Happiness is coming home to you
Happiness is falling asleep and waking up next to you
Happiness is "just a few more minutes" in the morning
Happiness is loving you
Happiness is you

The earth, brown and warm
Inviting, comforting, exciting, calming
Potential, reality, purpose, hope

Forever will I swim in your eyes of brown
Not wanting,
Waxing, waning, cycling, comfortable, exalted, excited

Forever will I swim in your blessed brown-eyed gaze
Content in their warmth and promise of what is still to come
Brown eyes

There’s no point sitting at home with a long face,
Trying to work out why,
Life’s dealt you the *** deal,
For now you’ve got this second time.

Step on up with a smile on your face,
Try and work out why,
The worlds began to shine on you,
For now you’ve got this second time.

You’ve got to love yourself !
Before anyone else can do !
Before anyone else should do !

There’s no point sitting at home with a long face
Trying to work out why,
Life’s dealt you the short straw,
For now you’ve got this second time,

Step on up with a smile on your face,
Try and work out why,
The worlds began to shine on you,
For now you’ve got this second time.

You’ve got to love yourself !
Before anyone else can do !
Before anyone else should do !
Love yourself!

Fields of cotton,
vast and white …
Like a rolling sea of snow in the deep, deep south.

Pecan Pie and honey,
Muscadine jelly …
So sweet, sweet in my mouth.

Mmmm, Saturday shrimp boil
and cheering for college ball.
After church on Sunday, a picnic barbecue.

Two things, for sure,
will never be missing …
and that'll be me and you.

Herds of cattle grazing,
flocks of sheep a lazing …
Tomatoes fresh off the vine.

Gentle rolling hills
and streams and caves …
Maple, Oak and Pine.

Harvest season,
kids, young and old, all squealing …
Time for the Peanut Fest.

The smells of cotton candy and corn dogs,
white knuckle rides, country music and a rodeo ...
Those times are simply the best.

The haunting shrieks of an ol' Barred Owl,
roadsides and backyards …
filled with grazing deer.

God's lovely creatures both furry and fowl …
Wild Hogs … Peregrine Falcons,
seen and heard, far and near.

Granny's Peach Cobbler,
Mom's scratch-built biscuits …
Catfish in the skillet.

Could you find something to replace
even one of these heart-warming smells?
Well, tell me then …
How will it?

A lonely train horn calls,
off in the distance …
as  I lay in my bed.

It lulls me to sleep
with a contented smile …
All these moments filling my head.

Oh,  Alabama.
I never dreamed that I would one day live in Alabama. The universe does crazy things though, huh? I must say, it hasn't been bad at all. I don't plan on staying here forever, but it sure has a place in my heart now.
All hail these small and sweet courtesies of life.
For smooth do they make the road of it.
Grace and beauty – each cut so deep like a knife.
They beg all these inclinations toward love at first sight.
Yes, ‘tis those courtesies which let the stranger in.
With tones and mannerisms - they do have such meaning.

Oh - ‘tis such a blessed thing,
One for which I could lose myself
To the honor of my aching.
I feel a heart which bears all to itself.
Oh yes, tis' open – ‘lest I shut it all out.
So I ask, “Are not my eyes the scout
For which my heart journeys?
That vision, is it not flowing through my arteries
Bringing my heartbeat’s rhythm in tune?
Oh, let that beat be mine none too soon.”

With that said, she laid out her arm in front of me.
Taking hold of her fingers in one hand, I aptly
Applied ******* of my other hand to her wrist -
Firmly - and begin counting each heart throb.
“One – two – three – four,” counting out aloud
Measuring each heartbeat as it happens –
Hoping to find the art of her fever.
I close my eyes as I continue to count – thinking –
There is no occupation in the world comparable
To feeling a woman’s pulse.
And when I had counted to twenty five
I looked up into her eyes and
At that instant I felt her pulse quicken.
She clutched my fingers tighter in the one hand
While pressing the wrist of her other hand
Harder into my account.

Is it possible for two to become one flesh and bone?
And if 'tis true, what is everything else to become?
Sometimes yours while at other times the other has it?
All the while to be generally on par tallying up the score
As we each permit the other to share in ourselves –
At least in as much as a man and a woman have the right to.
Like a bag full of pebbles which started out jagged
And rough, with very little gleam.
Only ‘tis after being years in the bag together
Do the stones, having had many amicable collisions
Wearing down their angles and edges, do they
Become well rounded and smooth with the brilliance
Of their combined luster.
Nothing to either could have been
Accomplished alone.

She looks back into my eyes as she presses her wrist into me
and asks,
“How does it beat with you?”
Placing her hand on my neck I say,
“Feel for yourself -
‘Tis an improvement –
‘Tis my evidence.”

Silence

Stay here with me and find your rest
Find relief in the shadow of my loving embrace
I challenge you in the practice of silence and patience
The point is not to find words where there are none
The greatest friends are comfortable in the silence
In the space between moments
Are you comfortable in the silence yet?
Do you trust me enough that even in the silence I will speak
I just want you to be with me spend time with me
Find the deep inner peace in your life
Be content with me and what I give you
Be content just to be and nothing more
Trust me: I am more than enough
I am all you need and I love you
Lose yourself in the shadow of the cross
Rejoice for I come to seek and save the lost
