Orange Rose
I wrote a poem when I died...
Another at my birth.
A brand-new sonnet when I cried.
And again when there was mirth.

A song for my confession...
A story for my pain...
A painting for depression...
And nursery rhymes for rain.

My creations live inside my heart.
I keep them there in shame.
Yet you looked around and saw my art,
And smiled all the same.

To describe how you entrance my lusts is not to love you
To say you are beautiful, to compare each feature you wear
With flowery prose, with dramatic declarations
Is not to love you
For it is not you curls, or the scent of your hair
Nor the colour of your eyes that I would squander an ode to
There are many with eyes and hair such as yours
Many with less or more graceful hands
A many of lover’s lips and pleasing faces
With shapely forms and tapered waists
With the embellished scaling cadences of a choir
And other things for which I’m told I should desire

All of something mortal worlds compare
All these things the world tells you is beautiful and faire
These are things a camera could capture
And not the reasons I love you

What I love about you is not something that can be caught
Cannot be wrangled, pinned down, or fought
I was allowed witness to your spark
A moment your soul burned bright enough that its very embers reached my heart

It took root in me, it grew to a flame like a zippo lighter
Every time we spoke, it fanned a little brighter
For me, before it began it was over
Of any room, dressed in any garb, to me you are the cynosure

That light at your core lit up your face when you smiled
A smile was just a smile until I saw how you did it - right there!
It fills a room until I scarcely believe there is such a thing as air

I fell in love with your clever disputes and the contagious way you laugh
The words, worlds and points of view that you craft
With that mad humour, compassion, and your bluntly put curses
Your desires, your faults, your quirks
Your temper, your heart, your mirth
How your eyes took in spans of bland ashen days
And your mind painted it all into a miraculous blaze

I love
The things about you, you don’t notice or even see
I’m like a bird in love with what it means to be free
For me there is no one fairer, no other who could raise the bar
Because there is no feature that could sway me
I fell in love with who you are

Rabbit, Rabbit, worn and weary at my parlor door
Come inside, sit by the fire, we’ll let tea spirits pour
They listen as we sip, they’ve never heard a rabbit howl.
But you’ve loved a wolf, and the wolf loved you
A rabbit who was on the prowl

Your lover wore the beast they made, of comets, dirt and fur
You drove fast cars
You fell through stars
You think it would all become a blur

Oh the places you two ran, the places you two crashed
A rabbit who danced through constellations
You two birthed solar systems when you clashed
You tell me of what you saw, the gods and their creations
The secrets that you made together, the heights you did ascend
And how this journey came and went to find its timely end

Because you lived an urban fantasy, in a world like a dream
Fantastic creatures in it teemed
Fantastic deeds and fantastic feats
Fantastic, eerie, dark lit streets.
For all its wonder, much like your lover,
It had as many teeth

And this is where a rabbit learned to growl
Grew sharp claws to disembowel
And on each other you left your marks
Be it lovely or be it ******
Both felt trepidation at the threat of sparks

So Howl, rabbit, who offered up your beating heart
Howl rabbit, who loved the prowling bard!
Tell your stories, weep into your cup
Nostalgia rocks you in her arms
Howl at those old once blazed skies
Howl about all of those pretty lies
Howl, divine heart break of harsh goodbyes

A thousand suns set on that day
The dream is done, or so you say
The things you crave, the things you made
These things you’ve done will never fade
The fauns of man have made their war
In the ballad of a love that is no more...

But you’re not a rabbit, and they weren’t a wolf
This was not a dream
I was there, and it was despair,
The story wasn’t as pretty as you made it seem
I’m glad it’s done, that you’re both free
I hope you did enjoy the tea
But make no mistake, I know your habit
They weren’t a wolf, and you’re not a rabbit

I lost my heart to a dame called fame
And every day I worshiped her the same
Adoration and power, everyone knew my name
Every step and twirl drew me deeper into her game
I found myself dancing on a slippery ledge in the rain
Until my feet bled and what I lost was much more than I gained
When I could dance no more she twirled into another's arms
Seducing new lovers with her old flashy charms
Who knew not the dues by which she set their alarms
She left me behind, limping and all used up
All because I proved I loved fame far too much
Sold off little bits of my soul for the favour of her smiles
But fame does not love you back, it simply beguiles

Lead me along to the end of the line
Where I’ll take all my woes and leave them behind
Step by step the world draws near
When time resumes so will the fear
Fight, fight, fight
It burns, this raging of the light
These walls have stood strong from the day they were risen
So now begins the cataclysm

It shakes and shakes, right to the hollow in my heart
It break and breaks, the walls begin to part
With silver string I try to tend
Frantic stitching meant to mend
Silver straining to hold the pacts
Struggling to close the growing cracks
But in the end the walls cannot hold
In the end my defenses fold
And in and in the tides invade
The one thing that all have obeyed

The time, the time
It is here
Now there is no stage for fear
The stone does crumble
The earth does rumble
Dodge the rocks as they tumble
For here is the wave as it washes through
Even if you have not a clue
Wave your arms and kick your legs
Swim the currents you must brave

So I swim, I swim for the shore
Sink fingers in the beach, aching and sore
I’ve lost the silence I knew before
Wild and untamed life abound
Terrifying beauty does surround
Ecstasy and agony walk hand in hand
As I roll to my back on this bed of sand
The gilded cage is torn asunder
Bared to the world, this splendid wonder

You led me along to the end of the line
Hiding from the world was my crime
Take a deep breath
Prepare for immensity
Take a big step
Because courage is necessity

This siren that sings out my name
Calls me abroad to oceans untamed
Over waves and under cloud churned skies
Through rain and hell my vessel flies
Through turmoil and treachery, beyond it all
Still I hear her haunting call
Drawing me on, begging me to haste
Through starry darkness, past time and space

Adventure is the song she sings
Of life and stories, these incredible things
To compare her allure, all others have paled
The answering of her call I’ve never failed
Onward to her melody I will always run
Forever she sings, this chase never done.

From a sun spitting its tears of flame
From those fires borne, the dragon came
And oh wonder, a foolish earth did seek to tame

Its claws were like molten iron, two eyes of that same ember flame
Its every step shook and scorched the ground, every breath evanished the rain
Its roar rattled bones and stilled hearts in their *******
And such a glare, few had a match or such courage to test

Upon burning wings and on its igneous cries!
A dragon heaved fire and set ablaze to the skies!
And none, righteous nor wicked, had darkness to hide

But it t'was not done for justice, nor to rally fears
T'was done simply because the sun had shed her tears.
