After all this compression, perhaps I am becoming something after all. Crawling away from my potential worth I feel myself writhing my way from between the rocks, taking quick, shallow breaths —learning to breathe again after all this time. Each inhale still feels heavy and constricted, and every exhale still brings a sense of dread for the rise and fall of my chest but I am moving forward. Even relieved, my ribcage is adjusting painfully to the freedom, coping with more lung space; a gift I received from you.
Did you know: Most natural diamonds are formed at extremely high temperatures and pressures around depths of 140 to 190 kilometers (87 to 118 miles) within the Earth's mantle. The name "diamond" is derived from the ancient Greek αδάμας or adámas which can mean "proper", "unalterable", "unbreakable", or "untamed", from ἀ- (a-) and "un-" + δαμάω or damáō which means, "I overpower" or "I tame". —According to Wikipedia, anyway. Incredible what a bunch of carbon becomes after being locked within rock for so long.

O formless one
naked are we and outstretched, unobstructed
we have smashed the dead symbols together
to try to make a few useful pieces of flighted existence
walking through charcoal ashes
Carbon

Carbon is carbon is carbon-

the skeleton key, vitally

important and wholly ununique.

And I am she is me,

diamond so tough that only it

can scar itself,

graphite that is written and

crumbled and erased.

In the air you breathe out,

pleasant for trees but otherwise

deadly, and

trees are trees are trees,

rooted to the spot without me,

taking in the byproduct of our

existence and using it to outlive

us all, to change and fall

and grow again.

Count to ten and then

reach for the sky to the place

where trees climb people,

and remind themselves not
to die

while the people’s hands
stretch and
close around carbon,

tethered by
ineraseable existence,

trying to breathe.
Coal, graphite and diamond
All are elements of pure carbon
If you take a vote
I will go with graphite
Cause I am a writer -

graphite is the matter that we use to make pencil....
graphite means I write...

I,
a colony of 37 trillion cooperating cells
Would like you,
a colony of 37 trillion cooperating cells
To accept, some of my
colony of 37 trillion cooperating cells
To join some of your
colony of 37 trillion cooperating cells
to create a completely separate
colony of 37 trillion cooperating cells
and as our
colonies of 37 trillion cooperating cells
cooperate less and less,  our new
colony of 37 trillion cooperating cells
shall be looking for a
colony of 37 trillion cooperating cells
to repeat what countless
colonies of 37 trillion cooperating cells
have done since we swung in the trees.
Ah romance, the thought of each person being a colony of cells is as humbling as it is fascinating.
