Bouncing down the tall stairs
Hazel eyes and short blonde hair
Daughter, the first of two
She looked up to you
Mama’s girl was so small
Not like her dad at all

Daddy liked to fish, hunt and hike
Kayak, canoe and mountain bike
She liked all the little girl things
Barbies, crayons and trampolines

Today I sit in your old kayak and gear
And think about us as if you were still here
I wish we could do all these things together
Now we’re the same, but you never got better

In and out of hospitals all the time
Still we all thought that you would be just fine
No answers, no cure and little treatment
But you had hope in the discouragement

Time has passed and you’ve been missed greatly
I realize now just how much you gave me
Your stubbornness, determination and drive
Your deep love and passion of all things outside

Dad, so many things we could do
I want to be back there with you
On the water with that kayak
But nothing will bring those days back

So many things you’ll miss
Stories of my first kiss
Frightening my prom date
Seeing me graduate
Walking me down the aisle
Tearing up all the while

Dad, you are loved and you are missed.

Moon Beach
M K Whitmore Jul 2014
The sun begins to set
I see us standing there
Hand in hand
Can’t help but stare

The moon and the stars
I see the beach, a fire, a glow.
Sweetly singing and dancing
You dipping me slow

You draw me near
With a whisper in my ear
A kiss on the cheek
I can’t even speak

Your piercing eyes
Could be my demise
Your shoulders, strong and bare
Wrap me up, take me anywhere

A knowing sigh
The ache in my heart
This longing
Begs us not to part

Passion restrained
Three words I know but can’t say
Waiting
Hoping
Praying
For that desired day
…and dearest, it will be worth it.

a night hike
M K Whitmore May 2015
hand in hand and two bright lights
moving through the calm night
leaves lit by the moon
hoping to find water soon
an eerie calm
loosely clasped palms
a sudden hesitation
and running imaginations
whispering with you
over a noise or two
a light disappeared
slight unacknowledged fear
****** rising
emotions heightening
a disturbance in the leaves
a tighter hold, a startled scream
you called my name
two large ears hopped away
laughter ensued
steps continued
the destination seen piece by piece
place to rest and regain peace
a rushing water found
feet slowly moving with arms around
to an unheard beat
water and rock beneath our feet
under the flecks of stars through trees
perfect night with you next to me

Abundant Grace
M K Whitmore Jul 2014
“Child, you believe in words but not in Mine.
Friends, family, everyone, all the time.
Why do you listen to the world out there?
I created you, saved you; you were spared.

Dearest, I have written you a letter
Explaining to you My voice is better
I defeated sin on a wooden cross
Laid My life down there and covered the cost

My words are truth, bring life and call out lies.
Why do you disobey just out of spite?
Remember My forgiveness and My grace
It seeks, reaches, covers every place

Devour My letter, rely on Me,
Your Heavenly Father will set you free.”

Moon River Rain
M K Whitmore Jul 2014
An excuse to hold eye contact with you
Such soft giggles and deep laughter ensue
You take my hand or go around my waist
Dancing, between us with less and less space

Your breath and mine, the only tune we need
I could dance all night to your slow heartbeat
Our feet drag easily through the cool sand
You spin me around, my heart in your hand

The rise and fall of the waves’ trough and crest
Parallels with my head on your broad chest
Much more than rain was our gift from above
Protection, and a sign of God’s great love

Fire between us must remain subdued
I’m falling, sweet Joshua, just for you

Dad, I miss you the most on days like these.
God has brought my future husband to me.
I wish you could meet him; you’d bond I know.
In a year or so, down the aisle we’ll go.

I love him; I know you would love him too.
He’s an outdoor lover, dad, just like you.
He seeks the Lord Jesus and loves Him first.
My little heart feels like it just might burst.

I miss you, you know and I always will.
You are the only one that place could fill.
In the sadness, immense joy I have found.
In my Heavenly Father love abounds.

I’d be lost and lonely and feeling bare,
But the Lord Jesus is always right there

A Scatter of Stars
M K Whitmore Jul 2014
A scatter of stars in a moonlit sky
Hidden place on the lake where time flies by
Waves crash while soft embers crackle and glow
Perfect occasion for things you should know

You take my hand and draw me near to you
**** in the sand with a new move or two
Your strong embrace takes all my fears away
Most of me wishes forever we’d stay

I always want to be right by your side
This fire between us, harder to hide
Lingering in your arms dreading goodbye
My heart with you I gladly confide

I’m so thankful you chose me to pursue
Every minute: an adventure with you
M K Whitmore Jul 2014
My heart and flesh long for your warm embrace,
the feel of your lips, the gaze of your face.
Everything in me says, “yes, you’re the one,
my happiness, my all, my shining sun.”
The world says, “go, have him, know him, he’s yours.”
My flesh wants you, but my soul knows there’s more.
Your arms make me feel wanted and secure.
It’s playing with fire trying to stay pure.
My heart sings when you say I’m adored,
but really what is it my soul longs for?
Boyfriend, you were not created for me
and neither was I made for you simply.
Each were made to glorify God above,
to know Him intimately and to love.
As much as I love you, I love Him more.
It’s my Father my soul truly longs for.
The closer we get, the more I can see,
it’s only Jesus that can set us free.
I don’t want you to think I’m ditching you;
to do so would break my heart into two.
I’m saying let’s keep our eyes on the prize:
the eternal which truly satisfies.
I love our sweet love, but His sets us free.
We’re better together on bended knee.
"If we saw Heaven, we could not bear this earth. That's why Heaven is forever: we cannot bear to leave it after we get there." -C.L. Allen
