I am nothing
more than a reflection
that has animated itself over the water’s surface

But the picture is so much clearer

like an idiot
Verdant Quo Nov 2018
like water
I poured myself into her until she was overflowing at the brim

like reinforced steel
I bridged my heart to hers and welded myself to her soul

like the sun
I filled myself with light to cover her darkness

like a blanket
I shielded her from the harsh world underneath the covers

like magnets
I orbited her aura until we inevitably collided

like a seed
I felt myself growing up from her

Then, like an idiot
I could tell she felt nothing.

A Natural Flow
Verdant Quo Nov 2018
With iron in our blood and water in our eyes
It’s hard to explain why death we cannot defy

Because the metal that’s made us is just rearranged dirt and dust
As we as a society are ****** forward by scientific wanderlust

Perpetual drive to figure out what is human while forgetting to be a person
But the human condition worsens as we evolve to a certain urban version

A claimed advanced people with brain and brawns for power
It becomes easy to forget nature’s showers; the trees and flowers

Never forget your origins. Never forget where you come from
The Earth that made you isn't just a drum for you to beat with your thumb

With iron in our blood and water in our eyes
We lose our elemental touch as the world continues to cry

Ramen
Verdant Quo Nov 2018
I carry a white noodle bowl,
carefully up to my chin.
I smile as my nose catches,
the steam so grey and thin.

I set the bowl down gently,
Because it was too hot.
and take this time to ponder,
The noodles I have got.

A small carrot captain,
rides his vessel south.
But the spoony seas are violent,
and bring him to my mouth.

Legions of green sprouts,
are armed and at the ready.
But their base was built on broth,
and therefore is unsteady.

A scallion sergeant paces,
He’s timid and afraid.
And hopelessly fell in love with,
A mushroom mermaid.

The brothy land changes,
As beef enters the scene.
And to the broccoli scouts,
this meat is only mean.

Finally the egg,
who knows he’s the best.
Will wander around the edges,
till he decides to rest.

The dinner’s duty done
I tilt the ocean east
And drain the sea of veggies
into the belly of the beast

I take the styrofoam bowl.
And poke a hole in its side.
The bowl is now found empty
All my friends have died.

Mornings
Verdant Quo Nov 2018
Late autumn air
wanders
through the window.

A coffee ***
clicks
and allures me awake.

The song sparrow
serenades
the sun skyward.

A stereo light
vectors
out to reach my eyes.

And the faint
patter
of rain echos against the glass

I am awake

Kansas
Verdant Quo Nov 2018
The moon’s fingernail
pushed over the celestial dark fluid
that overflowed nightly.

The midnight blurred
my flattened, forgotten universe’s
center rather greedily.

The world ended
at the edge of my car’s windshield and
moved forward quietly.

From the highway
the faint heartbeat of Kansas
throbbed two-dimensionally.

Her heart cavity
collapsed under the infinite stretch of sky
and pulsed irregularly.

The fall of Atlas
forced all the beauties of the world to be
buried subsurface perfectly.

But my mind spitefully imagines mountains

Dew Drops

dew drops
balance
between the pull of gravity below and the suns warming light.

the drops
hang
systolically pressurized into a mist that clouds the horizon for a few early hours.

they then
accend
to hold themselves as cotton quilts that intermittently blanket the kansas sky.

the clouds
contemplate
the heliocentric allure and draw themselves up from out the atmosphere.

waters gift
departs
To rise through the celestial heavens and eclipse themselves into the void-stained rapids.

were left
dehydrated
scratching at the surface for a taste of nothing and everything.

present humanity
falls
as the water rises, up and up until the world shrivels up just as quickly as it was inflated.

Inflected Language
Verdant Quo Apr 2017
I’m reading my dictionary with the pages missing
Of all the words that I’d much rather be dismissing
It’s much easier to ignore what’s been written
To stop the queue of a page that’s already printing
Listen
Cause we live where we can rip anything out that we don’t like
Take out words like bomb raids and hunger strike
My dictionary might be a little lifelike
It’s saying what I can and can’t do for a klondike
unlike
Sitting down and facing brown reality
Taking very simple things making hyperbole
To realize you might be a nobody
Cause there’s nothing that life can guarantee
Do you agree
To be afraid of a word in a book is nonsense
Maybe I don’t understand the context
But is there really that much weighing on your conscious
That reading is like consuming tons of toxins
Word

Everyone likes to tell me what I can and can’t say
But I like to disobey and I say it anyway
Any way that I can
To get my point across
Any way that I play
with word play
and words say
how much you can weigh
and can you be gay
or can you horseplay
on the Lord’s day
and hey
I take the highway
As my getaway
But the signs are on display
on where I can turn
and when should I yield
And still the words reflect
on my windshield
but what’s in a word

bird
I hear bird’s the word
But let me reword my password
Cause it’s too simple
To unlock the emotions of other people
When they wear their heart on their sleeve
Strung together with staples
And it is a staple
That I should be graceful
And tasteful
Not be wasteful of my words
Cause that’s all I got
and it seems I forgot
to boycott the
thought talk
and just keep it to myself

Because words are powerful
And I am not
And too often I hide behind them
And finally I’m giving it a second thought
Sometimes I talk too much to people I shouldn't

Cola-Coke
Verdant Quo Apr 2017
Coca-cola has the taste you never get tired of, always refreshing, thats why things go better with coke after coke after joke
Is this a joke
Cola-Coke
I musta mispoke
Coke.
Blow your smoke
and my heart evoke
Mr. Coke
Mr. Coke
Strong as an oak
I swear, you tryna provoke

I’m being short-changed
Changed by the pain
of empty wallets and weight gain
Is this the dope or just coke in my
Brain veins
Cause I swear e’re time it rains

I get a little bit stickier
with that sugar sweet
fresh, ahhhhh
taste you just can’t beat
Without a drink
my meal ain’t complete

I trick or treat
for that bittersweet
flavor that makes my heart wanna beat
Say bye, wave hi to e’re passerby that I meet
I’m incomplete
Is what they want me to think

And so i drink
I drink and I'm
filled
I drink and I’m
thrilled

Just to be a little part in their bigger party
Seein only things that they want me to see
I nod to agree
I read the marquee
Lock down and guarantee
But I’m still nobody

Nobody to you
and nobody to me
and now I see
they WANT me to spend money

But I’ll spell it out for you

M-O-N-E-(WHY)
do I buy things
I feel a certain way
Why do I buy things
I had a bad day

I think I buy cause I’m worthess
gotta validate and purchase my purpose
And coke’s throwin me inna circus
of life, liberty and the pursuit of happy times
But it's hard to pay your way with nickels and dimes

but I can refund this bottle for 5 cents
or break it, and it be my defense
How does that make sense
Now I’m on the fence
Do I buy another bottle
or a six-pack for the road
I don’t really know
when it comes to cola-coke

coca-cola
sugar sweet
can’t be beat
Will that be debit or credit
Our chip reader doesn’t work
See you tomorrow

Virginian Home
Verdant Quo Feb 2017
That stoic, elderly house
that sits beneath the sun
has it’s door hinged open
just waiting for someone

All day in the Virginian countryside
the waves of wind pass by
Yet the door remains open
‘till the sky begins to cry

A table set for two
venetian blinds on the floor
A stool, a record, a painting
All watching through that door

The night falls for the day
and the house falls for sleep
and through the unhinged door
A small songbird must creep

The sun forgets to wake the house
But the songbird pays her fee
To room with the house that night
and sings from the walnut tree

The house door swings shut
afraid to listen and hear
For the house is afraid
Of the musical musketeer

Careful to know each other
But their minds begin to roam
All while, the songbird brings him music
and the house brings her home
Sediments of memory build the Virginian countryside
Slate stepping stones on the green, gravel walkway
fall away from the city outside
and deep into the forgotten hours of today

One night, one evening
Girl, scared
O’re the toilet she’s heaving

Ok
Refrain
Another shot
On the way
Methane
*******
Ecstasy in her, broke veins
Insane
Propane
She puts down the bottle to find her
Left brain
Mundane
How to drown out
This pain
This pain

Her thought train
Now just an empty track
Please Father I pray
Give this girl her life back

Hey but,
This time around
She’s gonna be alright
This time around
She’s gonna put up a fight
This time around
She’s ready to ignite
Yea this time around
She’s gonna get it right

Sayin’

This time around
She’s gonna be alright
This time around
She’s gonna take it to the heights
This time around
She’s ready to rewrite
Yea this time around
She’s gonna get it right

Comeback
Icepack
She’s feeling around
Pitchblack
Missed that
Take a deep breath
Fill her air sack
Kickback
Relax

Stop time
Rewind
To the gods above
She whined
But they could only sit there and laugh
At the suffering of their favorite little handicraft

One second
from a blast
From the past
“Why me” she would ask
She would ask
Agast
Harassed
Daddy put his hand on her back
Abashed
She lashed
Against the bed
roughcast

Night after night
And day after day
Their little secret
Would never ever walk away

Down the street
Watch her feet
Clippings on the concrete
Retreat
So sweet
Calm her little heartbeat
Repeat safe
Repeat scared
Find comfort in ******* on her hair

Get away from him
Get away from them
She ain’t never gonna go back again
She’s on her own now
It’s up to her
Mindset switch
Emotional transfer

Ain’t nothing but a reflex you see
Little girl grown up
She drinks away reality

The Light in the Distance
Verdant Quo Nov 2016
Single file
opaque eyes of ants
search in the dark.
Darkened grey concrete below
paves the voyage
from shadowed food
into dim tunnels below.
The vague, drab nature
of the moon on their backs
cascades itself into the
expanse of clouded night.

Faint whispers of supplement
call to the ants one by one.
Foggy dreams lead them on,
though the path is hidden
by the wariness that night brings,
They continue still.
Progress is made yet always unseen
and undiscovered
Together they travel
feeling the street
with instincts of caution.

A tilt of their tiny, ant head
shows the rising light in the distance;
a distance that must be covered.
As they crawl towards the light,
the light crawls towards them back.

The pace slows as the eternity defines itself.
A foot on their back slows their initial progress
as it pushes them forward and it pushes them down.
The light grows misty in its closeness.
A stalk of industrial obscurity climbs its way up
to cage the light in its place.
The effort of the ants is lost on the
wheel of the machine.

Yet, resilient as time,
the lamp post lights the way.
