Afterglow
by Michael R. Burch

for Beth

The night is full of stars. Which still exist?
Before time ends, perhaps one day we’ll know.
For now I hold your fingers to my lips
and feel their pulse ... warm, palpable and slow ...

once slow to match this reckless spark in me,
this moon in ceaseless orbit I became,
compelled by wilder gravity to flee
night’s universe of suns, for one pale flame ...

for one pale flame that seemed to signify
the Zodiac of all, the meaning of
love’s wandering flight past Neptune. Now to lie
in dawning recognition is enough ...

enough each night to bask in you, to know
the face of love ... eyes closed ... its afterglow.

writing orrery unto unlined pages
lest my hand stills and my mind with it
turns away from all insignificance

Making stops from the sun to the moon
Who'd say i'd fall in love with you.
I'll land my feet on its dusky grey surface
Tell em Haze sent me,
Message you that i need better communication,
More assertion, more voice.
I'll skimp through 900 degrees,
I need the feminine energy to suffocate me
& i'll assert my drive across the reds
I'll write love letters to demos & phobos,
While i hang from the rings.
I'll take responsibility for falling in love with the stars, the moon and everything about you.

Chocolate eyes,
two distant planets
that hold a mystery more mystifying
than the furthest reaches of our galaxy.
My heart longs to
make the voyage
and make a home in your orbit,
but for now,
home is out of reach.

The most welcomed dreams,
they float no matter
what the consensus.

A bit pinched by Oliver Twist
campaigns, maybe,
but they vote for helium.

For to laugh is to shine,
and to shine is to supernova,
yet, still fit inside the head.

The hours, they are
a cascade of melting candles
burning a hole in the floor.

The only words spoken,
"My Very Educated Mother
Just Served Us Nine Pies."

But how can that be?
We're now one short.
Oh, bucolic heavens!

I grew tired of wandering
and returned to reality
in the angry haze of another
orphaned satellite.
When interrupted dreams are lost to us, drifting out of our reach, never to return. Forever orphaned from our minds.

a lioness above
clouds chilling
in freezing iceblue fog
quite willing

to attack and to shock
earth to **** and disturb
to swallow and gobble
each life fully and fast
Today is a good day.

Wandering across the vast space
Lost in this dark place
You're mesmerizing, has anyone told you?
I'm so attracted, I'm being pulled towards you

I was spinning, I was spiraling
I'm so attracted yet I can't get near you
Why are we so apart?
Your beauty is worth admiring

Our love is a forbidden place,
Our love is sacred
Will you listen to my heartbeat?
Or can I just stay in your orbit?

I was looking for my constellation,
And then I found you
One day, I hope our worlds will collide
When that day comes, we'll finally fly
