Summer Cramps
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
Hot weather
Produces cranky attitudes.
Contracting railroads
Make for slow progress.
Slowed time
Cannot go any faster.
Not that I'm against summer; I think it's the break in the seasons that all of us need, but there are things that I tend to notice and themes that recur...

A Solid-Waste Riddle
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
What is not entirely *****
Yet not entirely clean
And is at our disposal
All at the same time?
Recycling.
This was another spur-of-the-moment riddle.  I had the riddle part in mind, but I hope the title makes sense too (didn't want to give away the riddle in the title!).

Pride Fied
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
If we are not proud of something,
Then we would never have said aloud
What it was we did not, do not,
Or will not take pride in,
Refusing recognition
For the humility of a given circumstance.
I am guilty of this a lot; I personally don't like that side to me because I feel like I lie to myself, but, nevertheless, I still incorporate this into my vocabulary here and there.  Anyway, hope you enjoy this piece!  Also, the second word in the revised title is supposed to be the past tense of "fye", which I believe means something like "for shame" and such old English speaking (if I have that right lol :P)

Never Mind
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
No matter the desire to be open to all things,
We are always a close-minded people;
After all, does skin not enwrap
The sinuses of our imagination, thinking, and what we allow
To enter our cognition?
Talk about skin-tight lol.  :P  Enjoy, fellow friends of poetry!

Weather or Not
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
We are an opposite, contrary people:
We want our summers cool
And our winters warm.
Who's not to say
There already has been a global warming
Taking effect
In the forecast of fantasy?
I thought of this poetry idea this morning in my neck of the woods when my mom said out loud how she like the cool morning of today, June 12 lol :P.  Enjoy!

The Big Blue-Green
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
I’m not mad,
I’m not mean,
Unlike the dual-colored monster:
The Big Blue-Green.

The Blue Green’s not orange
And especially not yellow,
Because he’s as irate
As the red of the rainbow.

Don’t call that Blue-Green pink
And definitely not purple,
Or prepare to give into
A raging Blue-Green whirlpool.

All the other colors
Turn faint white
As they cower before
The Blue-Green’s might.

What can the Blue-Green do?
It’s only two colors.
Ah, that’s the Blue-Green’s trick
To entrap some fellers.

The Blue-Green doesn’t dye,
Nor lives as a vision to glance,
But it’s the fear inside you
Whipping its lance.
It's amazing where poetry ideas can come from.  Yesterday I got an idea from just sitting in a pew waiting for church to start, and today's idea came from a conversation among my dad, sister and I in a Kohl's parking lot lol!  This poem here sounds Dr. Seuss-ish (maybe, I at least think so; far from spot on, of course), but hope this sprouts imagination and maybe as plain a reaction as amusement.  Thanks!

"Trees" by Joyce Kilmer
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
I think that I shall never see
A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;

A tree that looks at God all day,
And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear
A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose ***** snow has lain,
Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me
But only God can make a tree.
By Joyce Kilmer.  To find out more about this early 20th century late poet, the article is found in the Catholic Knights of Columbus Columbia Magazine, which should be accessible through the following link:  https://issuu.com/columbia-magazine/docs/columbiajun18en?mode=embed&layout=http%3A%2F%2Fskin.issuu.com%2Fv%2Flight%2Flayout.xml&showFlipBtn=true

A Rant of Irritation
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
Get out!
Stop ruining my life!
Your words, they destroy my future,
Like a bullet, bomb, knife.
In other words
Shut up
Ever want to tell somebody a similar verbalization yet keep it to yourself?

Unfelt Feelings
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
Though words plainly expand the levitation of gases,
I still feel a twitch in my nerves when you talk,
Like anything I have ever said was meaningless;
Yet, when I express that your speech bothers my sensory system,
I feel a guilt
That I am the one who changed you
For my own satisfaction.
Why do I cater to myself
Instead of I who am more considerate?
Ever have one of those people in your life who have like a sing-songy kind of voice that gets you wondering whether you're still in reality as the tone of the other person seems to ignore the troubles of the world?  I know I'm really weird for expressing this as a conundrum, but just like nails against chalk, so sometimes this, no pun intended, "gets on my nerves."  But that's just me; again, please interpret how you wish! Hope you enjoy!

Utraquism to Neoism
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
Utraquism
Sameness, plaid, plain
Repetitive, past due.
Change.
Newness, just getting started,
The unfamiliar, the surprise,
Opposite of paleo:
Neoism.
I first learned of the term "utraquism" in a history class I took about a few years ago at nearby university and the word means literally "same."

A bachelor as a chancellor?
A Ph.D. in you and me?
When can it stop, this silly slop
Of pun exposed to everyone?
I thought of this rhyme consistency earlier and wanted to make at least something of it lol.  :P

First Comes
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
A pioneer
Is one to plunge its own nature
Into the unknown unnatural,
Such as Daniel Boone and the woods,
Or a **** sprouting
Between the crannies of gravel.
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
I, as a kid,
Always imagined being a video game character
And hoped to gain abilities
That would shock the world.
Although that's considered a fantasia of some sort,
It's not too far off
From the fantasia of reality:
That we can imagine change.
And after imagining,
Accepting and beginning that change.
I have some idea of the practicality particularly of adults, but even adults can still have the imagination of a child...just with a different world view.
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
America, America
Your forests dense and lush;
And yet they are so quiet,
Like they told everything "hush"!

America, America
Some of her rivers calm and blue;
They are extensive and reach out
To places near you!

America, America,
Your people intelligent and brave;
Some of us are so adventurous,
We camp out in a cave!

America, America,
How your mountains may vary;
Some may be rocky, some may be snowcapped,
Some may be extraordinary!

Alas, I have finished,
There is no more for me to say;
But always remember,
There is no place like the USA!
This is certainly a throwback lol I wrote and had this poem published in the eighth grade and thought I would do a throwback for the sake of the social media quality of this site and hip as it is lol :P

Self-Support

Insight sometimes can dominate any form of convincing speech.

Restless and Tired
Brian McDonagh Jun 2018
I squirm for rest,
But am caffeinated
With energy of mind.
My head and body ache,
But there’s an energetic spirit
I cannot control either.
I am mangled,
Twisted in selves
That even I don’t know.
All day today I felt the need to move and I couldn't sit still (could be the medication I'm on) and so I put my energy to use by writing a poem about my trial today.

Dreamcatcher Rap
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Netted on the outside
Dreams pass through the inside.
The good dreams seep the center,
The bad dreams are caught: DO NOT ENTER!
The sleeper with eyes shut,
Protected by the dreamcatcher
And selected by the buy-snatcher,
Slumbers in peace
When all is at ease
Around the dreamcatcher police.
Reality is still
But the mind is awake
And sleep is at stake.
Eyes cannot detect
What the dreamcatcher does,
It only sways in the midst of a glance.
But the dreams that pass the glass dividing atmospheric gas
Cannot be seen, touched, heard.
Dreamcatchers have a radar
That no being does.
The dreams charge at once!
WOOOOSH.
Not a dream is heard
Caught in the dreamcatcher grid,
But the good ones
Keep clean the REM zones.
Native-American tradition
I will surely petition.
I have two dreamcatchers in my room; I love the culture, tradition, and protection they offer!

Vatican III
Brian McDonagh May 2018
There’s no true newness
In renewing traditions.
If we as a people are called to accept change,
Then such gatherings and conventions as church
Should ponder anew
The possibilities of conforming
To accepting that a deity like the Holy Spirit
Cannot be contained to a breviary
Or even within walls for that matter.
I’m not necessarily promoting any sort of evangelism,
But elevating ecumenism
And a grand renewal of what it means
For those confined to the guilt and shame
That can come from church catechism, church magisterium,
Church this-and-that
To have their own way of approaching spirituality.
Let’s all be Richard Rohrs and St. Francises,
Not rebuilding a church,
But disassembling a building
That separates believers of faith.
If we are all friends,
Why do we hide behind walls?
Can we not bear
What other brethren might believe?
Let’s combust the world,
Scorching sameness,
Fueling newness.
There really needs to be reform particularly in the Catholic church.  I'm Catholic and I know what I have experienced; it's like one church I go to seems more institutionalized while another a gateway to easy friendships.  Again, church poem though it may seem, please perceive how you like; the sky's the limit with imagination!

The lessons of criminal activity
Don’t go unnoticed.
Agents swarm the scene,
But then there are those
Who translate previous challenges

The eyes that see us

Are the scariest of all.
A pun and hopefully worded as accurately as possible. :P

Eyes Closed
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Just because I shut my eyes
Doesn’t mean I’m extremely wise;
As I listen to what I hear, I realize
Here am I in the demise
Of my own lies,
Which may come as no surprise.
People with their eyes closed in meditation always look like they're in full concentration or they know what they're doing (as an example of where I lead this poem).  Honestly, though, if my eyes were closed in tense thought, chances are I'm thinking of nothing most of the time.  :P

A New Pentecost
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Red drapery
Memorializes the commotion
In an upper room,
A stirring of hearts
To better understand and communicate
The Gospel.
Yes, the Holy Spirit descended,
Goes that legend among Christian brethren.
But the Holy Spirit was already amid the biosphere,
Except fire would resonate more visibly
With Mary and the disciples.
A priest brought about in his preaching
That the church should call upon itself to move toward the Spirit
Rather than thinking a Spirit that already is believed to be omnipresent
Descend on church.
As comedian Tim Hawkins clarified for the Christian world:
What matters is not if you’re on fire for God,
But if God is on fire for you.
For those who might find religious commemorations such as this enjoyable and for anyone else.  Though I get spiritually centered in this poem, also think of Pentecost as a renewed time, so imagine what a NEW Pentecost could bring...

Life is a Car Ride
Brian McDonagh May 2018
I never was a fan
Of buckling in a van
And sitting
To mostly go
Where I never wanted.

I never found it a thrill
Scrunching my body
In every vehicle my grandparents leased
Every time my family and I would visit.
And, isn’t it ironic
How I’m the middle child of my family
And the middle seat in the back would always be available
Especially for me?

Traveling on a road
For more than an hour
Feels like a breeze after a time.
But somehow the shorter car rides
Seem to take forever,
The basic mile perceptually elongated.
Just my luck.

Everything I have done,
Every activity my parents rode me too
Required my AIS
And patience toward whichever parent
Navigated.

I almost begin to believe
That traffic roads have a treadmill mechanism
To illusion travel and make one believe
That the wheels spin forward,
But I think they lag atop the same gravel
Much too long for my patience and time.

As I crave for a hurry in life
When time slowly fumbles,
I wonder if I would get to where I want to be faster
If I took the wheel.
I cannot say how many times I find myself in a car on a weekly basis.  I'm not in a car too often during the day, but often enough to write a poem about taking a seat and riding lol.
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Every once in a while,
When I think of someone I admire,
Older or younger,
Even though in some way my acquaintance with them
May be valid socially still,
I wish they were my age
Because they seem to understand me
More than those I have already encountered
Who were born closer to the time I was born.
Just like how Smurfette’s lover
Wished she was human and not dwindled and blue.
I wasn't joking when I said I get ideas and I anxiously feel I must post them lol.  I got probs but hope you all are cool with that lol.
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Hey it's just Brian.  Again, know I should be posting just poetry, but I just want to let you who are following me and those outside who have seen my poetry know that I sincerely appreciate it!!!!! :)  This is a blessing to be able to relate to writers/viewers like you all as distant as virtuality may make it seem.  Just wanted to extend a bigger appreciation; I know I should thank each one of you individually instead of being lazy and sending out one message for all like most bogus automation does, but be assured I am grateful to be connected to others who have some affinity for writing and particularly poetry.  And shout out to the maker of this site Emily; Emily, this site means more to a person like me than you'll ever know.  This is a great site and I hope it stands as long as possible.  Anyway, just me; poetry on, peoples! :D  Also, I really apologize for not remaining true to my word in saying that I would read more poetry outside of mine than post more of mine; it's just that when I have ideas in mind I have an anxious tendency to want to make the idea come to life in text before I  lose it, but know that I am not inconsiderate about the mass collection of poetry that extends far beyond what I have contributed (if it's a contribution at all) to this site.  Maybe I shouldn't promise, but I will try my best to remember and see more of the poetry from the greater poetry community.  For it's better and should be better for me to give than to give for greedy gain. Peace Carolingian-script bards! ;)
Thanks! :D

Night-Hopping
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Where can I run
To escape the reality
Of my first break-up?
Where can I hide
To dodge those
That are after directing my life?
These evil maestros
Don’t know how to let an instrument
Ring out in its own voice.
Can my hands
Cover the Medusa eyes
That hiss in circulation
Until I tell my life plans?

Sometimes I wish the night would never end,
Not so I can rest,
But I can wander without fearing the terror
Of not knowing what’s around me.
I wish I could become a virtual character,
Gaining hopping abilities,
And being able to lurk on rural ground
As I admire the brilliance
Of the light pollution
From nearby facilities.
I wish I could just flee
The amateur terror others cannot see or feel.
I’m not talking societal threats or actions,
But what I see all too often
Is what chokes my growth
And ability to move on.
The living presence of my past
Still has me in a gridlock
That I wrestle with all day
Even though my weakness defeats me every time.
Fine, here’s my privacy and dignity,
Just leave me and my nocturnal silhouette
To intimately caress each other,
Rumba, tango, freely through the darkness,
The shadows, the black light
Which guides me but trips you.
Life ***** right now.  Or maybe always; it's hard to consider when I can't think straight.   :/

A Confession Confessed
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Am I sorry for what I did?
Well, when you ask me that question
When I am more focused on just having this burden lifted,
I know my mind will only think the opposite.
Plus, you shouldn’t expect me to walk away
And live life stainless,
For I will walk away clean,
But I will always be part of the laundry,
The load to bear.
I know right?  "Brian, why post all this guilt?" Because it's worth pondering lol.  I can assure you that I didn't write this as a continuation to any of my previous publications; this is supposed to be a separate idea with, again, limitless interpretation (but, of course, my intention here was to get at how I feel after confessing something that seemed awkward to put to mouth).

The Harmony of Matrimony
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Meadows, valleys,
Fields of wide pasture,
That’s the thought of today as we come together,
Us in our wedding vesture.

Whatever the day brings,
The sun still shines;
And we are together,
Like branches along vines.

Thankful for this time,
We share with close community
Our joy and happiness
While we have the opportunity.

Two hearts sync
As one beat in time;
The feeling is as whimsical
As the voice of a wind chime.

We profess our vows
Aloud to each other;
Endowed we are
With the love of a mother:

Caring, understanding,
Hopeful in all;
May our time beyond our reception
Be as nourishing as a banquet hall!
Wrote this for my cousin who's getting married next month!

A False Promise
Brian McDonagh May 2018

But it started out as a promise
That, in time, I realized
I couldn’t keep.
My assumptions and presuppositions are the lie,
But my intention was the promise
I wanted to keep.

There are times where I say "I promise" just to get the ball rolling, but in my justification, if I wish to keep a promise, I should allot myself a little more time to consider...

Memorial-Day Tribute
Brian McDonagh May 2018
I live because you died.
I enjoy life because you fought.
I see the sun because you blitzed through fog
Not of strati.
I can breathe because you inhaled war
And exhaled victory.
I pray and say that I pray
For you
Because I cannot give you
An earthly craft
As recompense.
As you lie in the ground,
Marked by stone and a flag,
I give you my time in silence
Because there’s nothing I can say
That can make up your life, your sacrifice, your time.
I talk by silence
Because I don’t want to disturb the peace
That you deserve and longed for
As you roamed a patriot,
But died a hero.
I know I'm posting this early, but like the many other commemoration days, I don't want to forget

Brain Static
Brian McDonagh May 2018
After seconds of cranium rehearsal,
I think I know how I will say what I want,
Until it happens far from how I planned to say it.
****, it sounded so much better in my head.
And no, the title isn't supposed to be "Brian Static" lol. ;)
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Me: “Father, I think I would like to pray my own way.”
Priest: “Ha okay (sarcasm), whatever you say, Brian.”
(Priest continues about in ignorance of commentary)
Priest (beginning Vespers): “O God, come to my assistance…”
Me: (beginning Vespers) "O ****, here we go again..."
(Grudgingly submits)
I have always wanted to be different in spirituality, but when I have to coordinate myself to meditate like everyone else, I feel "un-special" (if that makes sense...again, not trying to offend, thought).

The Folly from Fear
Brian McDonagh May 2018
It’s not a command
But an imperative instruction:
“Don’t worry, don’t fear!”
When fear enters a place,
The greater sin is on the ones who fear
Rather than on the ones who are being feared.
Fear is a test; though not a thrill to be a part of,
We fail if we do not rise against fear in some way,
Even as just an attempt.
Direct harm is the evil of the trespasser,
But remaining idle is of the onlooker and witness
And those with kinetic potential.
"We have nothing to fear but fear itself."   ~Franklin D. Roosevelt
Also, credit is due to a friend of mine who reminded me to keep trying to
push troubles aside as there are many and I am only one.

Stating the Obvious
Brian McDonagh May 2018
I heard it once,
I don’t need to hear it again,
But the first to tell me
Had no clue you would have the same lesson,
The same advisement,
But that doesn’t change the fact that I am still annoyed.
I get it!
I get it!
I get it!
I get it!
Please stop! The repetitive words and their unnecessary radiation
Overheat my thoughts, and I want to leave,
To break free from the bonds of this conversation.
Get me out!
But your voice yanks my guilt,
Pulls me to stay
By the “What-will I-tell-my-children-someday?” rope
Around the torso of my guilt.
Just sigh and get by, I circulate within me.
Another peeve that makes a life appearance; when someone instructs me one way, I'm reminded of that same advice from someone else as if there was some plan to do so that took place behind my back.
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Not to make too many other announcements, but I recently came across this meditation in my inbox by Fr. Richard Rohr, a Franciscan author, who talks more deeply about spirituality on his site called Center for Action and Contemplation.  The reason why I share Richard Rohr's name today is because his meditation for today ties spirituality and poetry together, which I had to share with this poetry-rich online community!!  I apologize if it seems too "Christianized" for those who  have other beliefs, but I encourage all to keep the poetry topic in mind more as I am not seeking to promote any outside or irrelevant source on this site.  To access the specific meditation on poetry from the CAC, here is the link:  https://cac.org/poetry-2018-05-22/     If anyone experiences trouble in accessing the meditation write-up, let me know.  Peace fellow poets! :D

Poetry's Lovely Quality
Brian McDonagh May 2018
To me, poetry is easier written
Than read.
If reading poetry is more difficult
To come by,
Why do I read poetry still?
See, that is the point:
It’s when I don’t understand a poem
That I want to read on.
For poetry proclaims
That there will always be those quirks in life
Which will never be understood fully
Unless we confront the author for which the work came to be.
Yes, that's the truth: I can understand what I'm reading grammatically but not always for the moral or lesson or whatever reasoning a poem contains.

Audio Distinction
Brian McDonagh May 2018
When one listens, one interprets sound
And obeys or adheres;
When one only hears, sound is received
But betrayal and ignorance
Intertwine the reverberating waves.
It's interesting to hear people say "Listen to me!" when really there is listening, just not obedience, the reason for the emphatic repetition.

A Window's Art
Brian McDonagh May 2018
If a picture’s worth a thousand words,
Then a window contains a library.
A window is set apart
From any canvas or oil painting.
You can see artistic scenes through a window,
Unlike most other art forms, which, of course, can be windows,
But they lack an outside,
A tangible and believable portal,
Sustaining the natural need of an environmental presence
Even within closed confines.
A student seated in a classroom with windows
Is more likely to gaze out a window
(Imagining escape, perhaps?)
Than to glance at even the best possible art around the interior space.
One purpose of art is escape,
And windows are a visual escape from where we are,
Luring us with the bait of what stares beyond.
Like all art, be a steward to windows,
Keep them clean and free from breath fogs.
Be grateful that a window
Gives you a view and protection from any disturbance
That may hinder your admiration.
Take advantage of a windows feature:
Open them up!
Feel the wind of the art on the other side!
To clarify the title, take it as either a possessive or a contraction such as "A Window IS Art" or "A Window WAS Art."
Brian McDonagh May 2018
There stands a mental tendency
To match a certain emotion
With a particular person
And call it ordinary.

At some point in time,
That person’s usual emotion
With take a detour,
Blinding the eye with unrecognition.

Somehow and in some way,
Someone will be bothered
By the sudden shift
Of what seemed to be emotional normalcy before.

If it’s too good to be true,
Then guilt will press the one affected
With the motivation to bring back
What was before.

When it seems that the world
Returns to its original axis of position
And that person acts like themselves again,
We rejoice that what was seen as a dream
Was fleeting,
Because as long as pain tampers bone,
We’re still on our way.
Please note that this poem, of course, like most poems, has a flexible interpretation: this could describe something as simple as someone acting unusually peppy one day or a case that has more of a medical density.  Either way, just wanted to point that out because this isn't limited to grave matters.

Mary's Duet
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Magnificat:
From this anthem of Mary
Comes the English “magnify.”
The Christian God
Lifts Mary in her small identity
To present her with a natal duty that drew nigh.

Fiat:
It’s quite simple,
But to hesitant Mary,
A second or two was needed
To confirm the angel was being true.
This “yes” of Mary eventually whirled from her lips
And accepted God’s Son to be seeded.
Take heed that quotational words are translations both times.  Hope you enjoy!
Brian McDonagh May 2018
Whenever I am content
Or am feeling content,
There’s always an air ready
To brush away or undo my content,
Just as a wrapper of gifts
Witnesses her efforts to conceal shredded

For the record, I am not intending to be sexist and say that
only females wrap gifts; I just feel like often, in similes and metaphors,
the pronoun "his" is too much of a default, and I wanted to mix up the usage of identification pronouns somewhat.  Also, as far as the poem goes, I run into this type of case A LOT in life lol.

Step Before Step After Step
Brian McDonagh May 2018
I walk my own path;
Don’t sneak up behind me
Or I won’t remember
Where I’ve been.
Even though the title isn't quite a palindrome, try reading it backwards
for a different meaning...

The Ego's Disturbances
Brian McDonagh May 2018
I am tired, but I cannot fall asleep.
I am hungry, but nausea repels my appetite.
I am thirsty, but I don’t feel like drinking.
Distance makes me question
Whether I am taller than someone or not.
I haughtily hover along gravity
To confirm my advantage in height
Only to become distant again
And find distance’s illusion annoying my confidence.
Lips smack after taking a swig of a beverage
Or to signal a break in one person’s talking.
It disturbs me as though nail rims scrape chalkboards.
Whoops!  There goes my ego:
Blaming anything outside of me!
For the thirsty line, as an example, I always get thirsty at night (when preferably I should be fasting from drinking RIGHT before bed) yet, in the morning when my body should be taking fluids in, I don't necessarily "crave" water in the morning.  Hope that clarification makes sense (this poem just states instances on occasion, not a daily basis according to the "ego" that posted this poem).

Sorry for not making this entry a poem, but I thought I would take the time to spread that, if you ARE or if YOU KNOW OF anyone in middle school or high school who likes writing poetry (or prose/essays), please consider checking out/having them check out this poetry contest website: https://www.poeticpower.com/index.php?page=students

No joke, I have been published by this company before, and even if you are not the final winner, whoever enters can still at least be published in the book that comes out seasonally.  For more information, please see the site or I can try to answer questions about it (no promises, though, considering I haven't been active on that site since...well...high school lol).  Thank you!

Procrastination Examination
Brian McDonagh May 2018
If there is a snare deadlier than boredom,
It is searching for an occupation
With the direct intention to pass the time.
Beware not to fall for an occupation
That seduces your commitment and dedication vainly;
For you will age with the regret
Of having some of your life’s story
Write what you actually did not want all along.
I do my best to avoid boredom because life has so much excitement to it that I never will fully realize, but then there are strings attached to the notion of keeping busy as well...
