“You loved him.”
It wasn’t a question,
but I answered anyway.

I immediately became defensive,
scared of my past being brought up
and merged with my present.
I was doing so much better.
I couldn't afford to mess it all up now.

“I wouldn’t call it love.” I said,
when I wanted to say:

YESYESYESYESYES OH GOD YES

“Why?”
Perhaps they were genuinely curious.
They didn’t know, after all.
They didn’t know anything about
him, or me, or us.
And they never would.
I couldn’t let someone in, not now.

“It's complicated.” I said,
when I wanted to say:

IT'S SO SIMPLE

I LOVED HIM BECAUSE
HE MADE ME FEEL SOMETHING,
AND FEELING ANYTHING IS
BETTER THAN FEELING NOTHING

HE TAUGHT ME HOW TO LOVE WHEN
I COULDN’T EVEN LOVE MYSELF

“So why did it end?”
I could feel the walls
I built myself tumbling down.

I wanted to tell them,
I wanted to tell them everything.
I couldn't. I turned away.

“It didn't work out.” I said,
when I wanted to say:

I TRIED I TRIED I TRIED

I GAVE HIM EVERYTHING I WAS

AND I LET HIM TAKE
EVERYTHING I HAD

AND HE STILL WANTED MORE

IN THE END, I WASN'T

SMART ENOUGH

PRETTY ENOUGH

SKINNY ENOUGH

THICK ENOUGH

QUIET ENOUGH

BOSSY ENOUGH

CLASSY ENOUGH

SLUTTY ENOUGH

WILD ENOUGH

PRIVATE ENOUGH

ATTRACTIVE ENOUGH

HAPPY ENOUGH

NO MATTER WHAT DID,
I WASN'T ENOUGH

Does anyone know why? - 7/10/2020 - I FINALLY FIGURED IT OUT! I had originally set up 20 Private collections. When I changed 11 of them to Public collections, the total public still showed zero. Today when I added a NEW Public collection, the actual total  was finally revealed. Yippie Skippy!!! - © 2020 Mark Toney. All rights reserved.

When we are in public:
I was like riding at the back of the tricycle as I was looking at you , walking forward.

There are things I don't speak of
There are those that stay unsaid
That remain untugged threads
and swallowed sighs

There are things that grow inside
There are those that ferment to full strength
That remain encased
Unrepented

There are remnants I don't share
There are those I keep to myself
Lest they seep out
Lest they drown out all else

There are things that will drown me,
that will **** me dead,

but not yet.
we all have our secrets.  I pinched the first line from Sabrina Mahfouz's poem Happy Days.

Emotions
You can’t control them

Some people are able to show their emotions
Some people prefer to not share them

Emotions are private
Everybody decides who they want to share their emotions with

Emotions are a way to express feelings

Emotions can be rough or sensitive

They sometimes drown you
You decide whether to swim back to the surface or go under the wave and become a part of the ocean
Can you control them?

Kept in a box
Back of the closet
Remnants of time
Curios of place
Before she was
Someone's mother

London Bridge
Houseboat
Out on the water
Fun with inner tube
Pink lipstick
Little black bikini
Games afoot
Cocktail in hand
Sunny smile
Saucy wink
Natural grace
Hair let down
Playful air
Provocative pose
Naked as a Jaybird
Happy as a Lark
all poetry is personal
some more than others

to just spread out your private feelings
     in your verse
may not be everyone's delight

but if you choose words
so that the many find their voices
    in your own
you may be lucky
to achieve all poets' dreams

your personal voice
becomes the public

The clouds are so beautiful in the sky
I wonder if that’s like you and I
Do I complete you, like the clouds with the sun so bright?
Because you make me shine like the moon in the night

She looks like temptation.
There’s no way I’d ever tell her no.
She tries so hard to fake it.
She can’t let anyone know.
As soon as the lights get low,
She starts dancing real slow
And I just go with the flow.
But she just wants to leave.

She dreams big in this small town.
Bright lights, fame, a house in L.A. hills.
But she’s scared she’ll never make it,
Stuck here with her desires unfulfilled.
It’s right there on her face…
It’s right there if you’d care to see.
The tears stream down her face...
But it’s hard to see in subdued lighting.

So she’ll dance in a thong.
And she’ll dance to every song.
Bring fantasies to reality,
But hers remain asleep.
