I imagine that science and math are involved
If I had a riddle or a problem to solve
I’ll watch as granulated sugar dissolves
As it spins around in circles; revolves
A sip from my cup
Strips away my resolve
As I strive for perfection
While I grow and evolve

I wrote your name
on a piece of paper
traced all the letters
and spelled all the pain
I kept buried deep within.

Perhaps I must send you
a letter today
and be it a reminder
of how cupid once
pulled an arrow
for you and me

ten years ago

on a sunny
Valentine's day.

Too much pain in this one
it's no longer fun--  no
not so fun.
Another world--  with
another Sun
    where I can run.

I just want to run in the Sun.

But it can't be too far from
this one,  so
I make a parallel one--
with a parallel Sun.

Where I can have fun--
                                   as I run.

In the safe one,  I
can run,
and in the parallel Sun
with
my parallel fun--

                   I run in both.

Late night texts
Sleepy eyes
Small smiles
Butterflies

Stolen moments
Held inside
Beating heart
Stupefied

~

Left alone
Tear filled eyes
Chapped lips
Scarred thighs

Empty promises
Cast aside
Broken heart
Terrified

In case you didn't know
The pain you feel,
The fears you have,
The love you give,
Is real.

Take pride, Black girl, in
Your eyes—keen, ablaze
Thick, comb-breaking hair in puffs

We were meant to be,
Here, in this place, now
Though told we’re others, outside.

                                                                             Take pride, Black boy, in
                                                                    Your smile—wide and bright
                                                                   Long, wiry arms, perfect hugs

                                                                                     We deserve the sky,
                                                                          Clouds, sun, stars and all,
Earthward they pull as we soar.

                                       You’re worthy of life
                                           But guilty at birth
                             Of living while Black—full stop.

                                          The power in you
                                        Cannot be measured
Narrow your life for no one

                                          Quietly screaming,
                                    Under masks and knees
                              Slowly on we trudge forward.
