Starlight, Star bright
why do the monsters
come out at night?

Equal parts the product
of rampant inaction
and furious cynicism

Both omens and harbingers
of the tiding's
sudden illness

Their forms blot out what light
is left in the day
retrospection brings only fright

Tearing apart what is dear
time after time
until the kinder fate
is for me to
nip in the bud
any feeling of fondness
for a cold heart
is much less painful
then the gnashing of teeth
and tearing of their claws

Destroy the monsters
that call your mind home
no longer allow them
shelter within your bones
let yourself free
from the demons inside
you'll never find happiness
or the light otherwise
Listen to yourself, Steff!

I didn't believe in monsters
'til I saw myself
And the mess I've made

My heart races as the adrenalin pounds.
A nightmare I pant,
but nothing prepared me for those sounds.
I continue to chant,
It’s not real
As my chest tightens.
I am unable to diminish how I feel.
Sweating and frightened,
I sink under the covers.
Cautiously closing my eyes,
the image still hovers.
It is more than scary chases and cries
Or the voice you lose deep down inside.
This fear is of the monster I am unable to hide.
It was love at first sight
if it's possible,
Love at first bite

We live in two different worlds
never meant to clash together
a vamp who wanted my blood
a human who only ate "food"

But maybe we ain't different
maybe we are alike

For we both eat flesh
Tear down souls
and enjoy a refreshing red liquid

Maybe it was just us
thinking that you were the bad guys

Maybe we are just all the same

Maybe we were meant to be
*just not in this dimension

Beautiful dreamers,
Heart broken believers,
Don't let your cracks show.

Glistening stars,
Chasers of cars,
Where did our luck go?

The monsters,
Are hunting us,
The demons are getting faster.

Look out,
Look out,
The horrors are real.

Watch out,
Watch out,
Some how to their tastes we appeal.

Keep your eyes open,
They feast on fears.

Keep your eyes open,
They are your peers.

The times we check under our beds for monsters,
We don't realize that they're inside us,
They eat us from within,
While the world eats us externally,
It's all part of a dark melody.

Our monsters aren't all so vicious,
But it's a competition,
Because the world is undoubtedly ferocious,
They battle for eternities,
Until either is victorious,
And all that is left of us,
Are idle piles dust,
Oh it's all so delirious.

If humans could only understand this,
Earth could be an ideal,
No more cravings for cosmic space,
Life,
Possibly surreal.
I'm delirious...

When I was a child,
I only slept once in awhile.
I would always be too scared
that the monsters would be there.
Now I lay awake at night in bed,
but the scary monsters don't live in the closet anymore,
they live inside my head instead
and they're not just folklore.
All the monsters became voices
that fill and overspill in my mind
telling me I made the wrong choices,
and then sleep, I rarely find.

The shadows don't make me scream,
they don't have faces like they used to.
It's different now, even when I dream,
I'm not afraid of the things I used to,
so instead of boogeyman and sandman,
I have nightmares about being alone,
about death, about memories that can
start the tears, and turn me to stone.

Paralyzed in fear still; much the same,
but there is no mommy to run to when you're 25,
and these monsters play a stronger game,
because 24/7, they are alive
and they know me, inside out,
leeching onto every insecurity,
keeping me awake with voices about
how I'll never be free from me.

It's so much more terrifying now.
