Nothing like waking
In the middle of the night
To write a haiku
Feels like I just woke up from a 10 hour nap. I'm wide awake.

Love’s tender petals
Like the rains of yesterday
Wash away my tears

I’m sitting here
While you are sleeping...

Thinking…

How sweet it is
To watch you dreaming.
This is another scrap from the shoebox. Probably written down on a napkin in a bar years ago.

Wind driven waves break
On the shore they are making
Froth seeping through sand
Richard Grahn Oct 2017
On a windswept plain in a quiet place,
Beneath the stars in the moonlight’s glow,
Memories drift on the rising tide
As feelings flow through the seams of time.

Bound together they whirl and spin,
Weaving threads into fleeting glimpses.
These little thoughts are born to feel.
The meal’s been ground on the miller’s wheel.

A misty vision settles in.
It grows into a mighty swell.
Rolling over the present tense,
It leaves the heart with no defense.

No fence can bind this fertile field.
Its earthy yield is what we feel
But wrapped around on the spinning wheel
We’ll twist and turn ‘till those feelings heal.

Tomorrow never comes.
Yesterday never was.
Now is what is.

What was, what is, what cannot be
What comes, what goes, what withers away
The still of the night may tuck me right in
But the daylight reminds me of what I desire.

A silver lining reflects on my dream
The tussle of time works to drive it away
The traps are set, and the mines are laid
But I’m standing right here with that thought in my head.

To take a journey so bold and grave
There’s no looking back through the clouds and the rain
What’s here for a moment is gone in a day
What’s left of a lifetime no one can say.

We’re caught in the throttle of a blazing sun
Around and around the journey extends
We’ll dance this great dance to the very last step
Then we’ll harvest the rest that we’ve come to expect.

In a farfetched moment
Beyond the time that we spent

Lasting memories linger
And drift slowly by

Recollections flow
But the feeling is gone

So what’s to remember?
Was it worthy of thought?

What can we tender
With all that we bought?

There's just no getting back
All those feelings we've lost

Love is giving.
Love is kind.
Love is caring.
Love is sharing.
Love may be just in your mind
But if you find it, don’t decline.

This is a pure “stream of conscience” poem. There is actually a story here despite the fact that none was intended.

“I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.” Edgar Allan Poe

Lost in a chasm of broken dreams
Can I measure the depth with my inky quill?
Is there another place in the realm?
Do you remember where I put my head?

Where in the world did my orb get placed?
How can I get it back and reply?
Little issues pass by
There’s something to say
Catching my breath is the chance that I take

Traded for a note, I spy with my eyes
Clashing in the path of a desert wind
Rasping in the hash of a convincing beat
Born of a lion I cannot defeat

My feet walk the trail and I scratch at my head
Oh there you are, my trusted friend
It’s good to have you back again
Of that I am sure and you can depend

I’m set on the path that I trod with intent
Never was better a moment spent.
I’m lost in the magic of this well worn dream
A casual glance is all that I need

Well, that and my head.

i see you
in the snowflakes
dancing
We had a light snow-shower today. One of the flakes landed in my mouth, a tiny, chilly inspiration pill.

I want to make you say you’ll stay
But that’s just in our way
‘cuz the lights are burnin' dim in town
And the rain keeps coming down...

In hellfire and lead
Starvation for a pillow
How is your sleep?—send me a letter
Keep up the peace
Don’t buy diamonds from Caucasian creeps
And blank B of A
Just give it away

Hey, get your hands out of there!
We’ve got work to do
You can’t mess up my brain
But you’re driving meeeeeee to
Inspiration!

So good bye for now
Or whenever
With love

I said GOOD BYE FOR NOW
OR WHENEVER
WITH LOVE

With Love was written for Maria Luisa Garza; a great lover of music, poetry and poets, art and artists, Mother Earth, the cosmos and more. A staunch environmentalist and a skilled gardener she was when I knew her. We tangled up in love and then went our separate ways under the best of circumstances. This song was written around the time we parted ways. I will always love her for her free, hippy spirit, her fierce ******* and a great many life lessons.

Telling a tale that’s never been told.
I fight for the right to write it all down.
It’s not as easy as it looks don’t you see?
There’s no one here to do it but me.
It flew through the air and landed so close.
I couldn’t let it go just to wander away.
The rhyme is written the way that it’s wrote.
I can’t let it die before it’s been spoke.

The taste of your mind
Unwinds and relaxes me
Wrapped in your flavor

Sitting alone in a darkened room
Pondering here…
…………………………..what should I say?

This pen is almost silent now
These words depend on what I write
I wonder how the story goes but
I not so sure that anyone knows

My muse does not attend today
She’s left me here with naught to say
The pitter-patter of her tiny feet
Is nowhere near that I can hear

Her wafting jewels of thoughts unfurled
Are locked up tight beyond my mind
Her patient touch I love so much
Is just a memory (a phantom's touch)

I figure if I write this down
The world will turn around again
Perhaps there’s something more to say
Or maybe there’s another way

I can’t be sure—I won’t pretend
The thoughts I have are better said
Than written down and left for dead
They’re churning now inside my head

So listen close and you will hear
The mystery of this darkened place
The chance there is to make it clear
Is almost gone and not so near

The act of writing
Compels me to magic and
Elevates my soul
UPDATE: This was written before I had any idea what the difference between a Haiku and a Senryu is. I'm still a child in these departments. "Writing a Haiku" was the original title but this is not a Haiku. Therefore, after more than 1700 views, I've decided that it should be more properly titled. The title that fits best is simply this: "Writing" and it is more properly a Senryu.

It's no wonder this has been so popular here. We are writers and we know what the craft does for our souls and for the world. Nomenclature is really unimportant. What's important is the doing...

THIS IS THE INITIAL NOTES ENTRY: This is very true for me and I know it is for many of you as well. Writing is medicine for the soul and I don't know where I'd be without it.

Come together in a stream
Yearning for the sea
Can't tell you how much I miss the ocean.

the bend in your mind
little t~r~a~i~l~s we have taken
(now lost on your path)
Finally found a function key for the tilde on this tablet keyboard. Not the first time I looked for it but now that I've found it, I'll be sure and over-use it.

Your light tonight
Is oh so bright

You warm my soul
And make me whole

You take me where
There is no care

I dream of you
And love you too

Let me stay the night
Let me be your shadow

Let me waltz with you
In your brilliant glow

In the time it takes to be together
We’ll find a way to dream forever

Take me to your show
I really want to know you
Deep down in your soul
Where the flowers bloom and grow

Show me all your dreams
Let your mysteries unfold
Take me far away
Through the sunshine of your day

Sing your song for me
Let the melody run free
Dance here in the breeze
Where the leaves of time recede

Let your feelings loose.
May your river run so deep.
Let your laughter fly
‘till the sky begins to weep.

Whisper your desires
In the temple of my ears
Let me just absorb
All your feelings and your fears

Pray with me today
May more flowers bloom for you
Share with me your mind
As the world slowly unwinds

Spend another day
Spinning tales into the rain
Let your pain dissolve away
In the daylight that remains
