l;ays down his sweet head

the stars in the bright sky

look down where he lays

the little lord buddha asleep on the hay

the cattle are lowing

buddha awakes

but the little lord buddha

no crying he makes

i love the lord buddha

as i look down from the sky

and stay by his bedside

till morning is nigh

be near me lord buddha

i ask thee to stay

close by me forever

i love thee to stay

bless all the dear children

under thy tender care

and fit us for nirvana

to live with thee there

My hands fidget.
I will tell you when I see you that
my fingers could break when I speak,
loose from the chicken wire houses that pin them to nail holes
no one sees and my words could snap
with them, straight down their spines.
My hands fidget and my tongue trips.
One day I won’t be allowed to see your eyes, your eyes when the sun hits them and they turn green, your eyes when they're blue, when you're being real. Or both.
The sun is in your eyes and it's setting.
I think I could be the moon,
we could meet at every eclipse,
create our own lightshow in the sky or make them notice us just for five minutes,
the kids sat on steps behind the sports centre,
I will tell you when I see you that you are so ******* smart you could ruin the world with it, so why can’t I tell you this, so why can’t my hands stay still?
I want to feel the way my mouth tingles when we sit, you murmuring in my ear that you could spend all day here,
alone with the indents of each other's lips.
I guess if we ruined the world I wouldn't even feel Numb, the Nirvana song.
My hands fidget.
Recently I stuck a sticker over my fear of death to try and be as brave as you and now I am Nevermind,
I can't feel a thing.
My tongue sits still when I try to speak about thinking and when I think of losing you I see Topcat, Pink Panther and this time my mind trips over itself.
I chew my lips and the corners of my mouth close.
I can’t see in the dark like I can’t breathe when I see cartoons like I can’t see **** when you say we need to talk like I’m scared of the ******* dark so please walk me home.
You find my hair bobbles at your house and I'm sorry that that last one wasn’t a metaphor.
I imagine the space behind your closed eyelids looks like a dark place at 3am where you exhale smoke.
I imagine the space behind mine is inhaling, coughing and static in the form of a thousand headlights blinking
and
it burns.
My hands fidget.
You call me out and it sounds like my brain not being able to hold itself still, I can't,
I can't stop fidgeting under those blue-green eyes.
When you tell me you love me my fingers stay still.
When I think it's loud like nerve endings screaming at me god-**** react like
controlling hands, interconnecting veins jumping from wrists,
hazy.
The stuff of nightmares where you say I don’t trust you
but I know that your hands on my wrists would not,
do not,
burn
like that.
I will tell you when I see you
I will not wrap you in chicken wire.
I am writing to tell you that when you speak my hands stay still.
I am trying to say that nothing snaps and my head is
quiet.

Old age hath yet his honor and his toil,
Death closes all: But something ere the end,
Some work of noble note, may yet be done.
Not unbecoming men that strove with Gods.
The lights begin to twinkle from the rocks:
The long day wanes: The slow moon climbs: the Deep
Moans round with many voices, Come my Friend!

I:

I beat away several pounds of unneeded and unwanted flora. The brush was becoming increasingly thick. Sad, but I had no choice. The fruit that had sustained me had shriveled, disappeared! My choices were few. Either stay in the oasis where now only water remained, or take my chances with whatever lay beyond, outside of my paradise.
How loathe I was to leave the oasis!
I looked around, distraught with my efforts. It was getting hotter and hotter. It was sweltering outside, and it felt as if my entire body was being compressed and beaten down by the heat. The cool breeze and the rippling water were far behind me now. The jungle held no care. I pushed on.
The path narrowed. I tried several times to push my way forward, but something held me back. The jungle tried to stop me but I continued pushing the greenery away. I could feel it! There was a clearing up ahead. I can even see it now!
But it was so far away! I couldn’t go on… there was no relief, the jungle was relentless!
But with a sudden, final, desperate heave, I was through!
What is this? The entire land is white! I squint and peer a bit harder; The world comes into focus.

……

Dear God,
The Beauty!

II:

The top of the mountain is a lonely place. Overlooking the crystal peaks from my frozen sanctuary, it’s as if everything seems like nothing really matters. The problems of the earth are no longer my concern. I must be content with being the watcher. I have no true power however; no true reason for my haughty airs. It is simply an illusion granted by the monolith.
The cold is near unbearable. The skies don’t show it though. There is no sign of all the freezing rain, and all the snow that lies below. All that exists is a single moment of perfect clarity and reflection, untainted by anything.
The sun hangs at the lower edge of the eastern sky, partially obscured by the crystal peaks. Such power! Even the sun cannot move them, Its rays blocked by their forms. A lightshow emerges, terrific hues play over the scene, giving the entire skyscape a pastel aura; Orange near the horizon, and red, then purple, and finally a dark, dark blue as the sky reveals itself. A single bold star defies the sun, refusing to give up it’s light just yet. The moon is the stars consort, and they stand together in inevitable rebellion.
It is a time of compromise however; The sun and the moon can coexist. They agree for that a few moments, they can share the sky. The harmony remains unbroken for the moment.
Poetry? Prose? No. It is simply an experience. A discovery for the curious and bold; The ones of wit and cunning. The sun paints no picture, there is no armistice in the heavens. The sun and the moon hold no compacts, and I?

I start back down the mountain.

III.

A winter’s day came through with eyes for me,
And it gave to my person a lovely gift,
One of sweet charm and a passionate wit
Who would come with me to the Azure Sea.
True, unworthy I was of her, indeed-
But even her longing look was a lift!-
Given to me by one of perfect lips,
And a stout heart beside her perfumed breeze.
Her smile would give Queen Helen envy,
And her gaze could melt a man’s icy heart,
Her laugh would give pleasure never-ending,
And a frown could give a titan a start.
I simply cannot be without this light,
And I will fight forever for the right.

Will you join me for forever, and go to the Azure Sea together?

IV.

The man looked over the edge of the cliff, contemplating his fate. Thoughts raged through his mind; the doom at the bottom of the ravine, the loss of his Lady, the end of the world. Well, his world at least.
It was a terribly folly he had made the autumn day, as the leaves were burning. After everything he had done, seeing the Cascading Falls, watching the Pandorian Sunrise, climbing Mount Gaze, it was as if everything was a dream. Could his misfortune be real? Surely there was no such injustice in this world! No kind God would allow such things to occur. She didn’t deserve such a fate that befell her! The Azure Sea would have to wait, there was no reason for him to pursue it any longer.
He threw her ruby brooch off of the cliff.
“I am only a man! Do I deserve no sympathy?” The wind wailed, but not for him.
He stepped over the edge of the abyss.

........

“Wake up! You shouldn’t have drunk so much!” The man lifted his head slightly off the table to meet his wife’s gaze. Looking into her eyes, even through his alcohol-induced delirium he could see the loving look in her eyes. A tear slipped down his cheek.
“Love, you’ll never lose me. I may go away, but in the end….” He looked at her.
“Nothing but nothing could keep us apart. Let’s get ready, our ship leaves soon. The Azure Sea waits.” The man grinned, and he sat up. Together they exited the inn’s bar.

.........

The world will never wait for those who tread it’s path slowly, for those the Azure Sea is the end. The ones who travel the Sea have had their fill of the surface life and seek to forge a new path into the great unknown, unrestricted by the laws of the world. They seek something, something out there in its waves.
The story goes that people who travel the Azure Sea must relive every moment of their life, and at the end, they will realize the truth; The reason for their existence.
And so, Life continues, and the Azure Sea will reveal all. The ship awaits, and forever will not be left alone.

V.

Bronzed waves reconcile with my bow.
Liars, they rescind and form a new front.
Doldrums are occurring now,
Foretelling travel for at least another month.
The season? I cannot truly know,
However the sea holds no such compunction.
Unforgivingly my ship is lashed with rain and snow,
And I clear it, only to find another junction.
Where? Where am I headed?
You ask - Well I can honestly say:
My purpose is to go where even God hasn’t tread,
And find my unknown self along the way.
The destination, Good Lady! Is the end of the world-
The base of the endless falls.
To find the step where Cerebrus lays curled,
To hear the trumpet echo in the Great Hall.
Hark! Over the horizon is the end!
Haste! We’re almost finished with the Azure Sea!
Keep tight! We’re almost of the great bend,
The amber light has ended, now arrives the Eve!
A hall of divinity promises a hallowed tryst,
I.. I can finally see!
Friend, I am truly sorry for this,
But I cannot let forever be.

VI.

Blazing stars will give
Themselves to a heart’s lone aria
Shining with crystal.

VII.

Pastels flow and curve in all directions, rivers
filled
With….
Wondrous!
Creeping - slowly now, over the hill….
What is this! The converse of love-
Blasted landscape, cross the line-
Involved with an eternal struggle?
Absurd!
Beauty and the Beast, An obvious choice!
But why does the light feel so cold
And the dark just the same?
A disguise to hide the truth!
A trick for those uninformed!
A world for the ignorant,
I won’t stay here-
I won’t!
Love! --…
Back to the sand, Back to nowhere land I go…

Salvation was in a single grain of sand,
The end a mist-cover rift.
(I cannot live by omnipotent hand)
I will gladly return to no-where land,
If it means I won’t accept the gift.

Angels, do you hear me?

VII.

The woman sits on the boat, her husband in her arms. Waves beat against the side of the boat, and the night sky shrouds everything. Land is just ahead of her, at most a day away.
The other end of the Azure Sea.
She cradles her husbands head and holds him close. Tears stream out of her eyes and she thinks of all the things that they went through together. Sharp pain racks her, and she sobs even more.
She looks up into the sky, her eyes blurred by her tears. She sees something….something streaming through the sky. She rubs her face and gets a better look.
A series of stars arrange themselves into glowing arches, a single ray of light dividing them. They glow with the magnificence of the divine, a chorus for the ages. Then, suddenly, the image explodes into a series of shooting stars, sending a shower of brilliant luminescence everywhere, and revealing the new sunrise. The light illuminates her husband’s face, showing the smile that she couldn’t have seen in the darkness.
“Love, did you find what you were looking for?” She asks softly.
She already knew the answer and the world faded-

Just another brick in the wall.

-

‘Tis not to late to seek a newer world!
Push off, and being well in order smite
the sounding furrows; for my purpose holds
To sail beyond the sunset, and the baths
Of all the western stars, Until I die.

Tennyson, Ulysses
One of my early epics! Several parts, took me a long time to write. There's meaning in there - can you find it?!
I was selfish, when I was a little girl I would never share my graham crackers
because I wanted every sweet crumble in my mouth.
I am selfish because your love is more rare than any gem
but when it's shared with all of them the artists, the worthy
I feel as insignificant as the moonrocks I thought helped me soar through your galaxy
but were actually pure, poison. But no matter how toxic you believe yourself to be
every whisper of the wind reminds me of your melody.

There is a volcano of good inside you, I've seen it bubble and spurt
in your steamy passion for music and fashion, authenticity
is the heat eminating from the lava trapping everyone you meet
in a warmth so intoxicating, you make James Franco as dull as carbon dating
I saw that ****** volcano whenever you met someone new
I walked along its edge hearing the passion playing from your guitar,
strumming with dust, magic like a star

it's taken you trillions of years to get here so when I felt
your violent vibrations as you detoxed in my bed
I thought I'd hold the death of lightyears in my arms.
Like the medicated forever you lived for so long until you forgot
happiness was cleaner than any **** and brighter than any lightshow

But you know this, you knew this you hold libraries of knowledge in
every freckle on your body if I placed each one like a stepping stone
towards a computer I'd create a whole new wikepedia before iOs 8 was done
I'd predict it as predictable as your smile lifts the sun
and if those freckles were questions on a gameshow I already won

I will never know what goes on inside your head or to a comfortable point
but I prefer fluttering butterlies and a **** good joint
to any complacent ride and with you by my side I for once in this life
feel un-alone because being with someone who steps on their own
shards of glass every day because the pain is easier than bending
over to pick up the pieces pushes on the door of my opinion of evil
He could never be evil. He is delicate3 like the crumbling
of sweet graham *******

He is alive like the Happy New Year bellows we unisonly screamed with our
friends and the rest of toads after dancing for hours then dancing for more

You know my struggle, or try to know and that effort means more to me than
the fuel of a pollen to a buzzing bee
Your life, has been as ****** up as that time we almost died in your huge-*** truck
when you were higher than jesus and I went down on you in prayer
that moment, we got struck with inconceivable luck I thought I saw a *** of gold.

Your life, has been like elephants trying to juggle circus tents
if I could give you 22 years of reassurance that you are a beautiful boy
I would.
I'd like to believe you don't even want anyone to, I think you're through
with playing rockstar to a show that you can't even hear the music to

4 months without any substance in your body is an extraordinary
achievement and I am more than proud of you.  You've been a teacher to me.
You've been a prime example of needing someone as much as needing oxygen, or
loathing crawling through your veing towards the very thing that washed away the pain.

If I ever figure out the vernacular I'm not too embarassed to throwup in front of you,
I'd spill every nauseaus word proclaiming my fascination with your determination
to finding love in this life.
My memory is awful, so I exxagerate most, but I'll try to learn your lessons
I'll try to learn how to coast.

watch them closely
the lights in my room
changing
shifting
along with feeling
purple for numbness
i hate feeling alive
its pain
red for hate
i hate you
so much
because i knew you'd never love me
like i loved you
dancing with them
i see your face in the rain from my window
pain still exists
soon to exit
your exit.

hop skip and away
i'm flying today
feather in the air
i'm lighter, spark, fire
dare me to stay
but i just can't wait
i want to take to the skies
and see what i can find

hold on tight if you're in for the ride
want to see the whole world
see every fountain, river, mountain
lets explore open doors
step through find something new
no fear, any scrape or bruise
is an opportunity to grow
so
what do you say?
the only thing that could make this better
is if we're in this together
but i won't wait its now or never
you shouldn't have to think
so in a blink adios, te recordare!

so i take to the skies floating breeze
i want to be surprised at the colors
of the fish in the sea, and take a second
to see if there really is that many
or do i need to go fishing right now?
don't think i could stop if i tried
cause a fishy in the sea can
hook line and sinker this heart
if and when they're ready to sprout wings and
take to the skies floating breeze
sail overdrafts with me
jungles of Brazil to the city of Pair-ee

i've a heart meant for dancing,
beaches, culture, romancing
try anything once, most things twice
food, trees, and drinks are my vices
music is my ******* but it keeps me sane
so we just won't consider that a con
cause i'm pro-grammed hardwired
to move my feet to the beat of life
it may skip and shuffle sometimes
but thats the spice to the sugar
cause everything nice gave Jane a dull life

taking to the skies floating breeze
stop for a game of futbol no referees
play til sundown lay on the ground
catch my breath take a rest
open my eyes to watch the stars
turn the sky into my own lightshow
no cover charge
i want to see if they're in reach
so i take to the skies floating breeze
every different tree a different melody

now you're ready to explore with me?
consider yourself lucky i can recognize harmony
lets come together and find our rhythm
we make a beautiful song

Majestically under the ominous, dark clouds,
The rain pours over the Earth, moistening it in a hard, then gentle way as each drop, each body of water sinks into the bottom, vanishes,
With a rythm, each follow a purpose, a goal they want to reach.
Fertilising the earth after a drought, letting life grow out of light after those dark clouds make room for the golden light of the rising sun.
Let them be distorted, these drops of cheer, sadness, happy thoughts and agony, carried by the rough storms of an autumn afternoon.
Hitting the window, they display their tune with their delicate figure,
In harmony with the wistling wind and the growling of the sinister thunder the orchestra of nature reaches it's peak in this sensation.
The sky is pitchblack, yet crossed by lightnings every now and then,
Providing a lightshow, which might be a bit too dangerous to be around, for the music of nature, dancing, swaying across the clouds,
What is it that makes this silly storm catch my attention so much ?
Perhaps, the song of the lonesome rain when everyone escapes in order to not get soaked, is what truly touches my heart.
Because there is no one outside to listen to it.

I'm crying in my room at 2 AM.
Again.
Don't take frizzy hair and midnight cuddles for granted, they leave when you least expect.
When I'm not thinking I get lost in your sweet cottin candy eyes.
And I know it's not for me, those cottin candy eyes and midnight curls.
Still I'll wish for starry kisses and porkipine nights.
Still I'll miss the Cold soda filled drinking from the hose and laughing till Sunday.
Im not the religion filled lightshow, that you said I was one day. I can't help but wish I could be me how you see me.
You have a strawberry swirl sundae and I'm happy you can keep it.
My mint chocolate chip still breaks my teeth every night I try to lick it off the floor
I'm happy for you and him
For him and you.
So don't look back at my flickering lights just walk away with your strawberry banana sundae, I'll be okay.
This poem is about my best friend with midnight curls and Cotten candy Eyes. I might not see her again for awhile, but it's okay, I'm okay I'm happy for her. I just wish I didn't feel this hurt about it. I really ******* hope it doesn't show, but I'm happy for her and i will be okay without her. Sorry I'm rambling, lol this is dumb. Anyway hope y'all are having an amazing incubation period! Feel free to give me some feedback in comments or pm me if you want I always try to make a point to respond.
Summer weather

You see it's the summer weather
The barbecues are being cooked so well yeah
And the swimmers at the beach
are swimming between flags avoiding the sharks
And those crazy surfers as they surf with Santa
they drop off at the night club
to order a pina calada, yeah, that sure keeps us cool
You see it's summer weather
And you sun bake on the beach yeah
put on heaps of suncream, so cancer don’t strike, yeah yeah yeah
You see it's the summer weather
My poppy came out with a nice beer
And my two kids bobby and Toby had a coke
and they enjoyed that a lot
You see it takes away the hot, especially in ice
And it is great in the summer weather
Cause our drinks keeps us cool
You see it's the summer weather
The cricket and baseball is a playing
You see the players take about 5 hours to move oh yeah
And we see these players stand around forever
And in late of summer is the summer of tennis
watching the best players from around the world
and afterwards they go to the pub and celebrate
we say it's the summer weather cause those drinks keeps us cool
it’s the summer weather, the end of another year yeah
we lay the fireworks on the beach
so the lightshow, will be great
as midnight approaches we yell HAPPY NEW YEAR and then we say
what great summer weather, out champagne sure, keeps us cool

Lightshow battle for capsules of fame
DJ buckshot bass heavy blast beats
You are evil; do you now realize it?
When you come here, you are pacified.

No voices, no words, no useless games.
A constant pounding in your head
The frequencies rising and dropping
Speeding up and slowing down
Record hopping
Sample stopping
Echoes from squealing vocal boxes
A drink for the woman behind the mask.

Flash that peace sign. Smile gaps.
It's beautiful.
Tragedy, in essence.
Huge eyes glinting brightly
Raving spirals encasing them
A look of constant fear, or dread, or excitement
Or maybe it's all three.

This is the love of my life.
I feel like I can finally admit that to the world.
You are the love of my life.
She's better than that.
Numb brain.
Bunk in for years.
Never wake up.
But never really sleep.

Every night the bracelets glisten
Take it all off before you go.

Now pick what's truly important:
Your mind or your body.
You'll feel better with sleep.
But if you ride it out, your mind will thank you.

Blue hair.
Shine on.

Logical, symmetrical thoughts are all you seem to carry
And they bury me
Do you ever think about the notion of immortality
Even in your dreams
See, I am different, always have been
Always will be
I evolved from something else
At a different speed
Open your third eye and help retrieve my memory
Of a world where we were free
Cause when it’s over, it will be over
It will be
A universal lightshow in my rearview mirror
Take a look and see
You are the people who want to live forever
I laugh with tears falling
You are the people who want to live forever
But this is hell for me

I'd be lying
To telleth thee...
I'd be quote
(Happy)
Watching the fourth of July fireworks by mineself....
Though tis a blessing
With family next to thou...
( wanting ourn lover) next to us yet noone there....
Is a hard bullet to bite....
As I'm dreading  those powerful sounds tommorrow,
As I'm dreading seeing heavenly lights,
With such in unheavenly loneliness...

As so many think the fourth is a day to celebrate freedom..
I think more a day for hopeless romantic's to feeleth
Their pain splurge into an artistic lightshow platform...

My grief is a bus on the wrong side of the road,
I didn't see it coming
And neither did she.
My grief is the consoling, warm mug of tea.

The shape of my grief rolls down my throat,
It's scratched all over the words that I wrote.

My grief is a fence with flowers and cards,
It shakes in the wind when cars drive past.
My grief smells like rain,
My grief sounds like fireworks,
The frenzy, the lightshow, it brings back my pain,
Light up the sky and show me where it hurts.

My grief and I spend time like old friends,
We laugh,
We joke,
And she yells when I poke.

I poke and I **** til I rip her to shreds,
My grief is old
And my grief is new,
It drips in bright red,
And it scars where it grew.

My grief is tearing me from the inside out.
My grief smells like old stale blood,
My grief is a slow drip,
My grief is a flood.

My grief holds my hand in the hospital chair,
My grief grips my stomach,
My bones and
My hips,
My grief grabs my throat and tightens its grip.

My grief is the words I'm writing now.

My grief is these words I can't say out loud.
Fly to the brightness
Say the spider to the moths
Snack bars now open
Look at the stars, pinholes into another universe
where you aren’t so afraid to be who you want to be,
where you chase all your dreams with unabashed glory.
“I’m made of them; if only I could shine as bright.”

Where do you hide in the forest of your mind?
Is the sky full of light or does the weight of nothing bring you down?
I can hear your crying somewhere in the pines and ash,
throwing wishes into the dark like whispers meaning **** all,
falling down in the forest and no one can hear the sound.
And as I wandered, I found you in the dark;
I never saw your face; I never saw your face.

You are an aurora, a dazzling display of colour on the black,
and I wish you could see it for yourself.
I could take a photograph but my breath in the chilly air
clouds your lightshow and mists your brilliance.
Even if I could show you it, you’d say your thanks
then ******* to show someone with brighter eyes.

I still love you, and look at you the way you look at those stars,
burning all those billions of miles away,
and my love gets lost somewhere in those light years,
swallowed up by the dark, blown away by your tempest.
One day you’ll find me wrapped up in my winding sheet, I’m sure,
hearing me whisper your name when the storms should drown it out,
and the touch of my hand as I reach out to yours,
the kiss of starlight on your forehead,
you’ll realise true love has never felt so ******* far away.

I close the shades, but wait
The lightshow starts at 1
Music comes in at 2
At 3 is the buffet. Chalk full of great dishes
Full and tired I doze off
Time to rest

Context and trust go hand in hand. If I tell you some stout men walked out of a bar, you'll understand that they're probably drunk. If I tell you they then walked into your house, you will be concerned, and then stop reading, or at least stop believing the things I say. And, understandably, you will be disillusioned with my tricks when I begin a story with an unexplained pronoun. But the fact of the matter is: the spaces between my words will not be a silence you abide. People have a tendency to fill in the gaps.

She held out one hand, her left, cupped firmly, fingers together, bound and tense. A tiny, prickly-cold ball of teal sparks bounced up and down, remarkably slowly, lying about gravity. She could feel each orphaned spark dissipate coolly on her skin. With her right, she squished the man's fingers together, then curled her hand around his, forcing it into the tight shape of her left. Curious townsfolk pointed excitedly at the hopping magic in her hand as they passed, walking from booth to booth.

It had been six years since Maria had felt so anxious, and even back then it was only half. She knew it would come today, in great waves. Rhythms of merry-making divided by chasms of trepidation, legato, slow-moving and dreadful. Her spine hurt, as though she had spent the previous day lifting boxes of reagents for her show at the end of the Midsummer Festival. Well, she had, but she knew how to lift; she was a responsible person, and knew proper form. Rather, her muscles were tight with nerves. She worried she might remember. With today's celebration all around her, the past was so near.

"Make sure you hold tense, all the way up through your wrist. If you give this unruly stuff any chance to hurt you, it will." She demonstrated, moving her left hand around rigid, and the spark-ball followed. She had a stern look on her face. "But it's fun as long as you're safe. Are you ready?"

He nodded. He must've been thirty, but he had clearly never gotten a chance to be a part of the magic before. His awestruck silence gave her a smirk.

She moved her left hand over his tensed right hand, then quickly snatched it back to her side, leaving the spark-ball floating above his slightly quavering fingers like a tablecloth trick. It bounced there, in his hand, just as it had for her. His face was concentrated deeply, brows clambering to touch but blocked by a pudgy wrinkle between. And yet his sense of wonder was somehow still clear, visible in the corners of his eyes, so Maria allowed herself a full-blown smile.

It was context that left that moment bittersweet for Maria. She would get it right this time.

She pulled at the head of her paper belt, a machination that often caught the eye of village children. The belt lapped her just above her hips several times, terminating in an odd box, something between a belt buckle and a mouse trap. As she pulled at the lapped belt, the latch cranked back, and then snapped down, tearing off a piece with a small wooden bead upon it. It was like a reel of button candies turned witch's tool.

Maria concentrated, rubbed her thumb across the wood, and it gave way to another playful sphere of light. She repeated her process, handing out a few more of these to those passersby she could convince herself she had taught to be safe.

One child had found it funny to spread her hand open suddenly just before Maria could give her the spark-ball. Maria glared the sphere into shattering spectacularly, sending sparks everywhere and seeming very dangerous. Of course, she would never have hurt the child, but when the girl ran off to her mother, Maria felt the smugness of the worst sort of teacher.

The horizon had just been kissed by the setting sun when she realized the time. She tried her best to steel herself and walked towards the weathered stage.

As she walked up the stairs and onto the stage, she looked out at the crowd. There was a sense of rurality that she hoped would be welcoming. The hearts of hard work preferred consistency to splendor, and she knew it. But she had worked so hard for this moment.

Behind her, the stage set was covered in trinkets. Ivy and moss draped over the drapery. A few stagehands rustled around behind the brown, musty curtains, occasionally sliding an open tome out into view, or rolling a small cart covered in lit candles out. None of these props were necessary, per se, but she knew her fellow performers had a penchant for the dramatic, so she wanted to impress them when they arrived. If they arrived.

Her back tightened and she could feel all the iron in her chest and arms. She could see shadows, fickle for sight, wisping at the outskirts of the celebration, teeming up from the earth and out from the forest on the outskirts of town. Please, help me, she whispered in her mind, knowing it was just for her own keeping calm. The motion behind the curtain grew quiet, and she knew things were ready. She swallowed.

"Good evening and good eats, my good folk! And what a festival it has been! For all of the wonderful people who were out in booths today, selling delectable treats and delightful trinkets they made themselves, can I get a round of applause?" She paused, and the crowd obeyed. Everyone likes to pat themselves on the back.

"Excellent, excellent," Maria said, nodding, her practiced smile radiant. "You know, before we start I just want to say: it's truly been a pleasure to share experiences with you all these last six years. I know I'm not always out and about at parties and the like, but your hospitality has been a beacon of light for me through a tough time. I want you all to know that. So, another round of applause, for being so amazing!"

She smiled and looked down at her feet for a moment, and as she did, she allowed herself to grit her teeth. She was suddenly chillingly aware of the danger she had gathered for her fellow citizens. This can't go wrong, she repeated in her mind, as she had been for weeks leading up to this day, to this show. She was sweating. She had to trust in her thoroughly proofread calculations, and the goodwill she had accrued with the fae near town in the last few years. Everything had been set up perfectly. It had to be.

And so she was smiling out at the crowd again when she flipped a switch on the dispenser head on her belt. "Now! Allow me to deliver to you all the display of a lifetime! Tonight, feast your eyes, ears, and hearts on the Parade of the Star Witch!" She grabbed the end of her belt and slung her hand out, casting the reel of paper out over the audience, and she left her hand there, gently grazing her thumb over each button as it passed.

She had cleared the first objective perfectly, but she didn't relax.

No fewer than twenty huge spark-***** shot wildly up into the air off the paper, directly overhead of many villagers, leaving wide, bright tails of blues and purples as they went. They hovered in place at the top of their range, blasting out light in unpredictable rhythm. It was loud. Children caught and argued over the used launch paper as it fell.

Maria stepped back with one foot and snapped. The candles on the table behind her roared into irresponsibly and unbelievably tall flames, instantly shifting from orange to varying cool colors. The scents of lavender and anise washed over the performance. The entire standing space of the stage lit up a deep green with the intricate details of a spell circle. She manually triggered the latch on her dispenser head, severing the paper, and snatched one last button into her hand. It was time for the second stage.

She turned and spun gracefully into the center of the circle, her dark sundress taking the light of the stage and the still-hovering spectacle above moodily. She put her hands together, and the wind began to swirl fiercely, and as it grew shadows eked out into the fading sunset, upright and physical, on either side of her. They lashed around rapidly, plentiful and playful, but seemed unguided by the sudden gusts.

She felt a sudden, sharp pain behind her eyes. One of her traps must have triggered backstage. Whoever it was had come too careless, and too late. No one could stop this now, not this time. It was finally going to happen right.

She raised her left hand up into the twilight sky, that last single button rising into the sky to be the biggest sparkler yet, in the shape of a massive star. Everyone would remember who brought them the joy of this night for years.

The shadows suddenly grew rigid, and then hands reached out of each, and the parade began in earnest.

Fae poured out of each shadow-portal in a march, walked off the stage, and continued out, stepping up into the air over the stunned crowd. They wove their own path through the air, finding a beat that affronted in theory but pleased in practice. They were of inconsistent shape and size, not just between individuals, but between moments. It was difficult to pin your eyes on any feature they had, but it was harder still to find them anything but dazzlingly beautiful. If the denizens of the town were impressed by the lightshow, they were rapt now.

Some of the fae reached down and pulled an audience member up to them, dragging them into the march. Those left on the ground blossomed with envy.

Now, at last, Maria relaxed. The props had been enough. Her work had been enough. Her "fellow performers" had accepted her offerings, and tonight the town would fall away from the cruelties of reason and time, and into something delightful, eternal, and fun.

There was -- to describe it as a sudden turn gives the suggestion that this eventuality was not certain. But it was abrupt, as more people were pulled up into the parade. Kissing spread like wildfire across the skywalking troupe. Some townspeople seemed uncomfortable. Some followed suit. But no one ran.

The town had left the world. The people would be swallowed up by the fae, or become them, or both, and the night would soak in revelry ad infinitum.

It was context and trust that always misguided the prey of the Town-Eater Witch.

A crackle before her, a gemstone green and deep, borne of Oberon. She collected her payment with a hand still shaky with adrenaline, and then she was the wind, and then she was gone. But the sparks remained.

— The End —
