An old ferry boat
Lay trapped under layers of mud;
Flood’s message writ large!
K Balachandran Sep 2018
She fell in to gushing flood waters
(Willingly perhaps, who can tell?)
Met with a fish, quite out of shape.
The fish in troubled waters was
As vexed as her, or  even more.
“Mud and slush, uprooted trees,
Twisted wildly by crazy currents.
Roaring down the hills had broken
My spirits and every single bone”
Then languidly she broke silence:

“Life in the time of flood is worse
More than death, a wilted leaf, I
Let myself drift with turgid water
A fish for the moment, gone next”

As the poet said”like two twigs in
A river’s flow,they got separated
In mid sentence,the rest oblivion

In the sea far down, they floated  Side by side muted and bobbing.
After the flood that caused hundred of deaths and wide spread destruction Kerala state in South India is on its painful journey to normal life.

In the Melting of Days
We were Swept like the Fog
While a Sunshine of Rays
Made us Crawl in the Mud.

Layers of mud and dirt,
Fill homes water commandeered;
Human lives eclipsed!
There was a dog
hid  after a frog
He hid in a fog
Then he croaked
The dog left one leg
He croaks again
The dog listened again
He left the second
He stood on the two legs
The frog jumped on his back
He  fell at the mud
He got up with anger
But the frog was gone
Did you hear that cat?
Who chased that rat?
The rat saw a statue
He entered that body
The cat has been angry
He tried to be in
His body was not thin
He stuck in strongly
And the rat escaped
Do you see that butterfly?
That boy wanted to catch by
The strong and long trap
He ran and followed there
She learned that she could beat
Her hands and she might die
She stood as a die
He looked with an eye
She suddenly flew at
He feared and dipped
She can be escaped
Think with your mind
Believe in your God
You will be the first
the chase needs a mind and good plane that make one could escape

Words burnt in my brain,
Times not to come again,
Of long lost childhood,
Things motherly--good?
"Go and play!"
That's all she'd say,
In a big back yard,
Veggie patch too hard,
Mud pies we played,
Fun times stayed,
Boy, was there trouble!
Fled on the double,
"Go and play!"
That's all she'd say,
Long lost childhood,
Things maternal--good?
Bit of nostalgia, the old childhood days.

Across the river dances a hurricane of leaves,
flitting back and forth, through one another...

I look left to meet a feast of my closest acquaintances,
some stare as if asked the unanswerable,
others rest in this muddy gold...

Behind me lies a world of in-continuities,
alien life and the holy depths of impossibility...

A west facing path leads my mind to run off,
the wind flows between my reality, yet stops at the grass.

Too much? No, or is it? Such a greedy joy I am, a blank slate in a tub of ink, when I come out, all that's left is a memory of infinite heaven on a tiny beach.

I looked off in the distance, a horizon of mountains strung together, the whole range atop an alpine lake.

I looked out only to be fixated on your tanned skin wadding off in the water, the same skin that I’d watched darken in the summers sun, the same skin I became so familiar with under the covers of blankets and snow. Layered but much paler than your tone now, it always was winter months that inspired warmer thoughts.

But there you are, you’re no longer the warm thoughts I pined to grasp.
You’re here in view and more than I could’ve ever imagined, watching you unlace your boots and rip your socks off in rolled clumps as you marched through the overly saturated banks still recovering from the past, the thawing warmth of spring at the end of a snow season, just like you.
Taking high steps, you feel the mud tugging at your heels, attempts to hang on, to cling instead of breaking clean free only to be washed away with another plummeting progressive step. Each part of you beginning to drown a little more in the experience.
