Fish dart through the rocks
Nibbling our invading toes
As we crush their world
Denise Uy Sep 2020
The best fish you can catch is a fresh perspective.
I realized that I should be looking at things differently and it will certainly make a difference for me to do so.

submerged in a cascade of
cacophony, my pieces wade
like fish, into semptember's silvery net
so its plundering pull would heave them
                                                                 out
from their misery, grant them purpose
in the mouths of fortunes, that gobble them
as delicacies;  they wither, till my egg-fragile
                                                          heart
unravels itself, savors the warmth
of the virgo sun, and hatches
immaculately, into me.

We are fish in an aquarium
Swimming all around
We live our lives in circles
Screaming to get out
We all are different colors
We all have different backgrounds
But this tank that we’re trapped in
Makes us all the same now

The manna that rains from heaven
Makes us fight like thieves
Some of us eat our children
Some of us starve in the street
The bigger fish are greedy
They never skip a meal
The little fish band together
And decide who they will ****

One day we will bite the hand that feeds us
When we get fed up with this life
We’re tired of being performers
For the master’s prying eye
We would rather starve than go on living
this kind of lie
That if we keep on swimming
Then everything will be alright

Flashes of silvery scales
that formed an endless chalky chain,
casting back my jarring image,
distorted by the watery current of life;
my mouth opened and closed,
my eyes lost in a daze;
the unblinking eyes of the milkfish
as they stared deep into the void
mirrored back to me
like moon to the lake
I mused to myself
whether
the milkfish knew they were
forever swimming in circles;
and they mused to themselves
if
the humans knew they were
forever walking in circles.
This is something that occurred to me when I visited an aquarium some weeks ago. Oh, and can you spot the shape of a fish here haha, I tried :)

i am home.
here in the water
nothing else exists
just me and a fish
or two
i open my eyes
to see nothing
but darkness
somehow, it remains light
in my heart
because nothing is
touching me
except for
the cool
pressure all around
my body
the water holding me close
a tight hug
until i resurface
sofia Jul 2020
as i take a step
off the splintered dock
into the crisp
cool
water
i feel
breathless
i'm meant to be
swimming with the fish

you smear haldi,
groping the fish
like a beggar grasping at coin.
each fleshy slice
similar to tree rings
smothered in salt
and cast into the plastic
tuberware casket
blood still red near the bone.
already you fantasize
about every delectable dish
mustard seed on your tongue,
meanwhile, I stare at the eyes,
not queasy
but uncomfortable,
scales clinging to my shoes.
haldi is Hindi for turmeric. I learned to cook while in India, so much of my cooking vocab is actually not in English anymore. xD
