I Identify as Fat
Michael Murphy Apr 2023
Trapped in a body
I don't recognize

The clothes that I'm wearing
Are not my size

I'm thinner than this
I know I am

What the mirror reflects
is just a scam

The food I consume
Doesn't all come out

Some turns to fat
And just layers about

It does keep me warm
On a cold winters night

No need for a belt
Now my pants are so tight

The solution is clear
I need exercise

Choose the small plates I know
Not the super size

It's the commitment and work
That I truly dread

To hell with it all
I'll be thin when I'm dead

Exploring Grief
Michael Murphy Apr 2023
So sick I see
I see death and war
A loving couple
That loves no more

The orphaned child
The broken limb
The pious soul
So wracked with sin

Watch flowers spring
From sickened soil
To die again
And lay to spoil

A faceless man
once proud and true
So what's the point
I point to you

If God there be
Is this the goal
That grief impact
Eternal soul

Is there a moral
To this story
Will grief-filled paths
Then lead to glory

Freeze time
Catch up

Go back
Repair
Redo

Go forward
Face fear
Prepare

Stop
Release
Let go
Having the ability to control time is the fantasy I embrace when I feel overwhelmed.  It might sound crazy but it lowers my stress!

Decision
Michael Murphy Dec 2019
Crystals on the windshield, ****!
Forgot to start the car.

Blizzard blowing daggers
Close is now so far

Decision do I quit and stay
Or trudge forth through the night

Fear has conquered want
I'm abandoning the fight

Road Rage
Michael Murphy May 2019
Such an ***
Is the fellow
Who crosses the yellow
When solid
And then again doubled

Run the red
So he thought
Cause he'll never get caught
His decisions are
What's making me troubled

Do the rules not apply
To this *** of a guy
So stupid, selfish and vain

I pray for his soul
Cause he's out of control
That he learns to
Stay in his lane

Argh!
Michael Murphy Jul 2018
To travel to a place
Of wonders, few have ever known

To see the beauty under
So seldom has been shown

Explore the valley lush
Such pleasure lies within

Exploding in such rapture
Exposing lovers skin

To feel her hands upon me
My world begins to quake

Just about to taste her lips
Is the moment I awake
Not sure if I love those dreams or hate them

Days on a Calendar
Michael Murphy Nov 2017
That day, woke up,  stood, stumbled,
There was blood

This day, took a trip, the rain came,
Stuck in mud

A day in March,  bank man came,
Took my home

A day in April, bad hair day,
Lost my comb

I drank too much, on day in  May
The next day,
paid the price

Was in the dark, on day in June,
Electric off,
Not so nice

A year from hell? I guess,
... But not

The Lessons learned, learned well
Have not forgot
Been through a lot but still enjoy every day.

Sleepy Hours
Michael Murphy Nov 2017
In the sleepy hours, I miss the warmth.

Body on body,  breathing as one.  I miss the touch, the being touched. The feeling of skin, not my own.

In the sleepy hours I think on memories,  I imagine making new memories.  Hoping my memories fold into dreams and dreams become real.
Laying alone at night and this is my stream of words.

Hope
Michael Murphy Sep 2017
Sadness grows like weeds

Choking out the light

On my happiness it feeds

As day folds into night

Oh blissful slumber

Fill my soul

With strength for

one more day

On the morrow

With brilliant light

My sadness melts away
Dealing with friends and family that struggle with sadness

Magical Tapestry
Michael Murphy Sep 2017
I was born with a mending thread. A gift.

I see sadness and stich smiles.

I see a hole and stich a patch.

I see a broken heart and seek to mend it.

I  see loneliness and weave it into a magical tapestry.

It is my nature.

Yours is a different cloth. The strongest and most elusive I have seen.

Try as I might to lay a stich, my thread dissolves, my needle misses.

I still always feel the need to try, though the fabric resists.
It is hard with some people to know if you are making a difference.

Secret pain

Broken dreams

Angel speaks...

Sleep to wake, wake to sleep,

day to night, night to day,

life to death, death to life,

only cycles through again and again,

Fleeting moments
Slipping through time

Moments spent
Looking back

Moments spent dreaming
Of future joy

Moments wasted
Looking nowhere

Only in these moments

Holding you

Kissing you

Loving you

Am I living

In the eternal
In the absence of time

My heaven
Is in the moments
Spent with you

Carnivore
Michael Murphy Jan 2017
I am a Carnivorous Zebra
I'm the only one of my kind

From the herd I've been cast
Because I just won't eat grass

So behind the strip mall I dine

Big blue boxes are a carnivores dream
As they fill them at the end of each day

With burgers and cheese
Eat as much as you please

Being a carnivore is really OK!
I know, I know, I'm strange.  We were talking about how much fast food is tossed at the end of the day, and how wasteful it is.  I got a picture of a carnivorous zebra in my head and it made me laugh.  I hope it makes you smile!

Change
Michael Murphy Oct 2016
Change isn’t easy
It’s incredibly slow

We always keep taking
The path that we know

So how can we change
Where do we begin

The first step for us
Must come from within

We’re running on empty
We need fuel for our fire

Just feel my love
Let it spark your desire

When I feel your heart
It’s a natural high

I’m a thousand times stronger
I swear I can fly

Let’s give into our love
Let it sweep us away

You’re the vision I see
Whenever I pray

I feel we can change
The whole world with our love

It’s the answer to change
From our angels above

That crazy, mind altering, time, when you first fall in love is a power like no other.
Michael Murphy Oct 2016
Let go and I will catch you
I would never let you

Fall
To the cold and hardened ground

Reach and I will reach you
Together we will forge through

Pain
Will die when love surround

Call and I will hear you
Feel my love within you

Joy
In our once lonely hearts abound

Move Out!
Michael Murphy Oct 2016
Move out
Move on

Find another place to live

I'm done with you
Yes we're through

I have nothing else to give

Pack up
Get out

Hatred has no home with me

Hear me shout
In your empty room

For love has set me free

My heart
Now free of hatred

Now has room enough
It's true

Peace has filled my emptiness
Since I said

I'm done with you
Just thinking that we need to let go of negative thoughts so we are ready to love. I don't watch the news anymore

Color Blind
Michael Murphy Sep 2016
When I was eight
At the park

Playing football
Getting dark

Older kids
Stole our ball

I can't stand bullies
Not at all

Then out of the blue
Three more kids appear

Did I mention they're black
So now I felt fear

But to my surprise, they said
Give the ball back!

What's going on?
I thought they were black

This confused my young mind
From all I was told

Stay away from the blacks
Or you'll never grow old

That one little act
Fifty years ago now

Changed the way I see color
Changed my vision and how

Today I was out
With my eight year old son

God, how I love him
We're having such fun

Then I see someone starring
No, it's more like a glare

I can't be that ugly
It must be my hair

Then an old thought creeps in
From way, way, way, back

She's glaring at us cause
I'm white, and he's black

So my prayer for this world
And I hope you don't mind

Is the day we can say
We're all color blind!

Amen
All true!

Math
Michael Murphy Sep 2016
They use fractals for the mountains
And then again for the trees

I think they might use calculus
For the waves upon the seas

Fibonacci works for sea shells
I heard also for the ear

Fibonacci knows the perfect rose
I submit to you my dear

Although not common in nature
If at all it's only a blip

But still incredibly fun for me and my son
When we made our Möbius strip

The most confusing math in nature
Used describing me and you

I learned in school, I know it's true
That one plus one, is two

But you and I together
It feels like we are one

And when you are away from me
The math it equals none

I Wonder
Michael Murphy Sep 2016
I wonder

If the animal
The dog, duck,  cat, and cow

Believe in life eternal
Or only think of now

I wonder

When the trees
Lose leaves

Will I hear them grieve

If they break a branch
Do they cry in pain

Do they think of God
Do they die in vein

I wonder

Who answers God's prayers
Does he pray at all

Or is that rare

I wonder

If God's so great
And we're so small

Are we like amebas
Does he care at all

I wonder

World Full of People
Michael Murphy Aug 2016
Billions of people
Roaming the earth
Every day, every second
A woman gives birth

So how is it
I ask you, am I here all alone

In a world full of people
No one's calling my phone

In a world full of love
No one's saying my name

Is it them, is it me
Tell me who is to blame

Is it too much to wish
On a star in the sky

That my wish will be granted
Or is it a lie

In a world full of people
I will remain all alone

Not one of those people
Will I have for my own

Stories
Michael Murphy Aug 2016
Unlike in a book, the chapters of
my life arrive unannounced

The birth of a child, the death of a loved one, the passing of a season, bring subtle change

New memories are made as old ones fade into the mist of time

Each day arrives full of possibilities
New adventures evolve into new stories

It is the stories, told and retold, that woven together reveal the fabric of my life
Sometimes a word triggers a thought.  I could rewrite but sometimes I like to just let go and let the words fall.  If it reads like a stream of consciousness, it is because it is. Something very personal and honest about the unedited word.

A Love Letter
Michael Murphy Aug 2016
To my love,

The sediment of friendship, kindness, and laughter will forge with time to form a bedrock of love on which we will build our home!

We will build on the strongest of foundations, using a special blend of respect, patience, and happiness!

The friends and family that come to visit through the years will stand in wonderment at how our house has stood strong through massive storms, the same storms that have destroyed the homes of so many!

The brick is fired in the furnace of life, tempered with adversity. The mortar mixed with faith and courage is the glue holding everything together.

Our house will absorb the rain, bend in the wind, and forever prove unshakable.

For it is the house we will build within our hearts and where we will reside for all eternity!

All my love!

True Love

A rush of sweetness in my brain
Your sugar lips are so insane

The sight of you just makes me weak
The touch of you is what I seek

The thought of you it makes me high
Away from you I think I'll die

You invade my dreams all day and night
I tried to battle but lost the fight

You loved me once then said no
I truly loved you so let you go

Find another my friends did say
But no other would feel that way

Now I'm old and now I'm grey
With loving memories I smile each day
When it's perfect, you know it!

Now swimming in tears

I was touching the sky
With our love through the years

Transformation
Michael Murphy Aug 2016
Love isn't about *** or money or tricks. It is about a feeling that grows from deep within the soul. With constant attention it grows until it cannot be contained.  When it bursts from its cocoon,  the metamorphosis is complete. The transformation ushers in a new life, with all new possibilities.

True ecstasy can only be achieved when the whole heart commits

Morbid Fascination
Michael Murphy Jul 2016
What's your morbid fascination to know the details of the ****

You'll stop and watch an accident
From which there's no escape

It's not your entertainment
In fact it's someone's life

It could be your brother, sister,
It could be your wife

So stop and think before you gawk
Is there a need for me to see

Unless your knowing helps those involved
I suggest you leave it be
This won't be popular, but I watched a clip of Elizabeth Smart explaining why she finally gave into the publics demand to know the horrific details of her kidnapping. We also had a dinner debate about watching a traffic accident.  I think we can't call ourselves civilized until we grow beyond being entertained by such things.  I stopped watching the news and started to focus on trying to be a positive force.  I would love to hear comments both pro and con.

Michael Murphy Jul 2016
Believe what you want
We're in all different places

We're all different people
With all different faces

I refuse to preach
What I learned as the truth

What was drilled into me
While still in my youth

Muhammad , Allah, Jehovah, or God
Some will say no God
And you will think odd

I will say not
Let's respect one another

For aren't we truly from ONE father ONE mother

In a time long ago
In a place far away

There is no one alive
Who remembers that day

For if you did
you surely would say

That we're  all from one place

Oh brothers and sisters
It's time we embrace
We are not really all that different.

Part of a whole

Connected to all that you see

You're not just you

We are one with the clouds

My right knee is steel
So now I can't kneel

He/She knows how I feel

You see blue sky
My right eye sees just cloud

I hear no music

I once had two kidneys
Now I have one

I agreed over dinner
My sister had none

My hair is all white
It used to be brown

It's going away
Without making a sound

I'm not complaining
Just telling you true

It will happen to you
laughing at myself, getting a running start to get out of a chair!

The POWER of silence

Though intelligence deems

No one knows
No one cares
Where he goes
What he wears

If he comes home at night

He’s all alone
He’s all he has
A silent phone
Old photographs

Why should he come home at night?

An empty bar
A glass of gin
No loving arms
To tuck him in

He should have came home at night

She sat alone
day after day
While he roamed
She slipped away

He should have came home at night

She loved him so
She would've stayed
And now he knows
The hand he played

He should have came home at night

An empty bar
A glass of gin
No loving arms
To tuck him in

He should have came home at night

A revelation I had
While watching a lad
Who swore, he was President Lincoln

Couldn't be, I did say
What had made him this way
Seriously, what was he thinkin

Oh so happy he seemed
He was living his dream
If only the Doctors could see

He was content just to stay
In his dream world all day
So I prayed this would happen to me

Now my sadness has lifted
And my thoughts are all sifted
Only delusions remain

I might seem a bit odd
In my mind I'm a God
Yes, as you guessed, I'm insane

I feel like I'm on a fast moving river

Sometimes I row hard and try to steer

Sometimes I just let the current take me where it will

Sometimes I feel lost

Sometimes I duck the low hanging branches

Sometimes the river widens and the current calms and I can rest

Sometimes the river narrows and the whitewater throws me into the boulders

It is in the turbulent waters that I am tested and my skills are sharpened

Always I try to appreciate the journey and the breathtaking views

I know around every bend, a new challenge awaits

Never knowing around which bend lies the non-corporeal sea of dreams

No more branches, no more bends, and no more boulders

Only calm waters, gentle breezes, and smooth sailing
