three lines advice
and the horizon
Niem May 2019
All the little thing that I miss are found within the crevasses of my mind. The way the sun reflected on the water and the way it felt like I’d never die. That night the low tide was made by the gentle lapsing waves. I didn’t know what was next; that was the way I wanted to live. I had plans to be and plans to see, laying each night with a new lover beneath me. Craving a life with a new direction, still knowing Ontario would always be home to me. The cliffs were like wise hands gently pushing me to realize where I needed to be. Those city lights carved around our bodies, setting the mood as you loved me in the night. As I’ve grown, those waving streets felt like sweet memories of home. 15 hours away I sat drunk in the bay. In the woods there was a strange man living how I envied, he made me realize where I stood. I’m being called to take my place but 2 more years is what’s keeping me from my fate. I move with hope and impatience but I’ve learned to slow down so these memories can keep me sane.

her grandmother        stood at the window in the kitchen

             the corners of her mouth turned up into
                  an unconscious slight smile
                  at the sight
                             of a spinning yellow blur
                              under the big oak
                              in the middle of the pasture
                              surrounded by green grasses
                                                       wonderous hues of wildflowers

she quietly called out to grandad
                             come see this

                the lanky cowboy sauntered in
                             from the breezeway
                             with his umpteenth cup of coffee
                              peered at the blur of yellow

                              opened the side door
                              stepped out on the deck beside the metal glider and
                                   called out in his smooth baritone voice

                                      sheeeeeelllllliiii...
                                      sheeeeeelllllliiii  lllllloooooooooo...

she might have
                             been 4
                                   or perhaps five

              precious in the way
                  innocent girls that age are

               dressed in smocked yellow lawn
                                                white lace
                                                patent leather

                                                  up to her shins in spring grasses

      slowing her spin
      she turned toward her name

       her face radiant she took a wobbly step or two
      then broke into an off kilter run
                                                 arms stretched out before her

      he took a few long strides
bent his tall body low
offering a bent knee
                 wide open arms

she flew into them with all her might
                   knowing she would be caught
                   rough housed with
                   and given a wickereye

                   from the window her grandmother took it all in
                                sighed
                                said to herself
                                         hold this dear
                                         hold this snapshot of the soul

                                         for.                           ever.
my granddad and i had a love-love-andmore-love based relationship.  he’s my greatest hero and the man John Wayne wished he was in real life.  we worshiped each other and i will forever and all ways n always hold him close in my heart.  what a lucky girl i’ve been!

I’m walking around the sun
Witnessing a new dawn that’s
always there and I
Can never reach it
Walking around
Such a distance
It’s hurting to see it just
Exist
Wondering what it is
And me, I’m not even considered a planet anymore
As if my celestial body does not have
A correspondingly celestial mind
I am both present and gone
Merely taking up space
In someone’s classification
Of spacetime
Pluto...Out…

I translated my poem into Bulgarian
Meh
Poem and mope
Are the same word
Built differently.

Rap music, discernible except for when the rumble and bumps of the jumping wheels takes over
But still subordinate compared to the twitters, chattering away
The scent of chicken wafts over from the seat across the isle (mind you I’m a vegetarian)
The seat head vibrating my head, thumping the same spot
From rap to pop, voice like a silky cord, winding, winding, grating
Piano back to rap
Head bends and peers, teases, smiles, the turtle returns back into the shell
Phones, phones, busy busy bees those thumbs
Back squished, precarious water bottle about to-HORN
Blasts, the wheels jump, and I’m gone with the sway
My **** falls, my body shakes, the chatters, the charters, the laughs, the shrieks
I’m swept up, I’m swept up
And washed away

If you can’t say something nice. Say nothing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you can’t say something nice  . Say nothing.
Fortunately I’ve been told I’ve a silver tongue
You would not believe me if I told you but
Only people with silver tongues never offend
Usually they are clever enough to be kind
Clever in the way they talk , the right words
Are coming out of their beautiful mouths
Now I have been told I have a beautiful mouth
That was long ago and I think that man lied
See he was the one who taught Me English
And he was just saying this to be nice
Yes he said “If you can’t say anything nice”
Say nothing. So I said nothing n I had lots Say.
Only I was inhibited not saying anything nice
My phobia grew so I learnt poetry by heart
Eventually speaking in only pure rhyme
The people could see I was different
Having no malice against anyone at all.
I never would gossip, never sand-bag anyone
Never take part in character assassination
Give false witness, commit perjury or lie
No I would say nothing if it were not nice.
I found that if I only said the good things
Comfort them when the were feeling down
Eventually they thought that I was a liar.
See a liar needs everyone else to be truthful
And I could only say nice things or nothing
You know how they told you that if you did
Nothing , the devil would make work for you
Or you would be given a silver tongue
Then with a silver tongue you’d be a poet.
Having learnt all those poems and been nice
I wandered the earth reciting poems by heart
Now my days are filled with guiding God.
God then inspires all poets to write only in
                PRAISE. With kind regards.
