Hand me the palette
If you can
I'm not a great artist
But I'll try my best
To colour the universe
inside your weary soul
In kaleidoscopic hues
Brighter than the rainbows
Of spring summer
And other verdant seasons
I'll try to revive
It's lustre back
Make the sun shine
As bright as I can
Scrub away
The clouds of despair
And the monsoon rains
I'll wipe with my hands
After I've accomplished my art
I'm sure I will see
your smile again
Your eyes will gleam
With boundless joy
And you won't even remember
What made you feel
So sad and desolate
In the first place

A winter storm had dumped a foot
of wet and heavy slushy snow.
As the sidewalk does not clean itself
I dressed to face my winter foe.

I worked too hard, I worked too fast
as I shoveled out our walks and paths.
My heart was racing; I' was feeling done,
then a golden retriever came on the run.

"hey there good boy." I greeted the pup.
"A Saint Bernard would have been nice too!"
He sniffed then licked my ungloved hand.
"Somebody must be looking for you."

Just then I heard from down the block
a voice called "Rascal" and the dog's head turned.
It clearly was his master's voice
"He's over here" I replied in turn.

His owner was a kindly older man
glad to retrieve his pet unharmed.
He'd gotten out to play in the snow
someone had left the gate not closed.

Rascal offered me his paw
and looked at me with deep brown eyes
We shook, then he accepted his leash
Rascal and his master  then headed home.

I never saw Rascal again
or meet his master on the street.
We met just that once on a snowy eve.
The memory is  all that I got to keep.

I'd often heard my mother say
that we oft meet angels in disguise
I can't say for certain this was such a case.
I have no proof for the worldly wise.

when will you be free?

It wasn’t so much
Like falling
As it was being hit
By a fifty-ton train
That jolted me awake.

You crossed my mind
and it felt right
but then I was lost
and I doubted you.

You were already beautiful
but I chose to be blind
then I caught myself
looking at someone
lesser than your shadow.

You were my regret,
my sorrowful bliss.
You were more than enough.
Now, you're out of reach.

The paint is flaking and falling off
splotched edges
discoloration
stormy days
weathered years
creaking and leaking
cracking from heating
the physics of aging
and seasons of raging
the terrible toll
they are taking
makes you think this old house
needs replacing.

But listen to the voices
of laughter and loving
hear echoes of weeping
and promise keeping
poems that were spoken
being whole and broken
see the tears that were shed
the glories in bed
sighs and lies
some of them said
inside the house that was home
these many years.

Inside spirit reigns
with angels unchained
where heart and soul
on a journey bold
through seasons of pain
where demons were slain
new life was greeted
death was cheated
souls were enrolled
in miracle courses
treasures discovered
of higher forces.

This old house of seventy six years
holds joys along with fears.
The structure isn’t new
but inside
there is
youth.

Toss myself out of bed
Peel myself off the floor
Drag myself out of the house
Push myself to the job I hate
Force myself to face the world
Command myself to not melt into a puddle that oozes through the pores of the couch cushions to become a useless incompetent waste of my own **** self

Demand more of myself
To keep myself myself
Just want to lay here and do nothing

Must. Do. Things!
