I sat on your bed,
confused as to why you asked me to stay
Your sister downstairs,
left to think what she wanted

You sit down next to me,
finding the courage to touch me
Your hands move lightly,
fingertips brushing my back, my knee

Our fingers collide,
but we are feeling too much to stop
Left waiting,
the back of your hand pressed to my leg

You stare at my lips,
I realize how dry my mouth is
We both know what's coming,
but neither is brave enough to start

It won't be much longer,
you press your forehead to my shoulder
With one sweeping motion,
darkness overtakes the room

I see nothing,
but feel your mouth against mine
Three months separated,
distance finally closed with open lips

When will your lips touch
the new scratches on my scars?

When will your fingers linger
just across my cheek, just
as the pain drips?

When will your spool caress
my fragmented windows?

When will your touch erase
the marks of his hits, the proof
of his existence, the crack
he left me with?

Where are you?
I've been waiting for you.
(Far too long)

Please come soon,
for the pain is quite unbearable
and I might not be here
when you decide
to.

a wall has been erected in front of me
“new construction, do not pass”
right now it is made of bricks and mortar,
but in the past it was made of wood and bamboo
I have slaved away, day and night building this wall,
a barrier,
in front of me
because I would rather look at bricks than my own reflection
this wall protects me from my greatest fear, which just so happens to be myself
myself, particularly, in love
I spent months constructing this wall
slathering between the cracks all the food I haven’t eaten
painting on all the brick the words I should have said
and tacking pictures of myself in different positions of aching:
curled beneath blue sheets,
inhaling scents of a ratty sweater,
and so this wall is a reminder of who I become when I fall in love
and I have been walking around, behind this wall, with contempt
with ease
because I can laugh and engage and smile behind it
but no one falls in love with me
and I fall in love with no one
right?
until…
you
a six foot small framed high-octane energy bright spark sees me
he saw me
looked through me
past that wall
an anomaly
before I felt my bricks burning at the thought of another looking at me
and the mortar oozed out when a stranger’s arm wrapped around my waist and pulled me closer
and I boiled over and erupted
and I frantically built that wall right back up
stronger mortar, rougher brick
and continued along,
I have braved the inevitable
I was free from love
yes, finally
but you:
who forget words when I speak
who challenged me to a thumb war to feel my hands before my lips
who wants to make me smile above all else
you are a rarity,
you are air finally entering my lungs,
you see me
you’re chipping away at that wall so slowly
but I am so afraid
before, if someone showed me any sign of love I would leap into their arms
I yearned for warmth and space and heat and rush
I drank bottles of truth serum and I spilled it all until I was empty
this wall never existed
but now:
when you asked me when was the last time someone told me I was beautiful, I cried
and when you told me you wanted to know my past without judgment, I cried
and when you said how you fell asleep looking into my eyes and looked into them hours after yours were closed, I cried
and my chest keeps swelling and sinking and pushing
and it is because I feel as though I am so tainted that you shouldn’t want me
I feel so much; I am a walking hurricane
I breathe nothing but fire
I no longer see stars at night
because I want love more than anything
but I am so deathly terrified of it
this familiar coat of all feelings; a patchwork of combined thoughts
I’ve worn it so many times before that it has ripped in so many places
it’s lost its shape
so I pinned it to the wall
but you,
you stood on the other side of the wall
at a distance, where I kept you
and you took the smallest hammer
and began chiseling away at my brick
and I panicked
because you said I was beautiful
and you loved my eyes
and you see through me
but I stopped myself from building it back
you see through me,
past me,
I should let the rubble surrounding my feet be a reminder of my strength instead of a weakness,
a break,
demolish me
break me into pieces until I am surrounded by dust
you should see all of me
tear down the wall.

you say you're addicted to my kisses and when i cry to you you hold me and i know you'll never let go.

your warmth has spread throughout me and thawed my icy interior.

your persistence scares away my sadness, while your laugh keeps me going and your smile keeps me steady.

i'm selfish enough to keep you to myself and you're selfless enough to let me and sometimes i get a little too upset, but you say it's okay because you get it.

god knows i'm trying for you and i can tell you know too. you've replaced my broken pieces with something better and you're willing to struggle to keep it all together

and i could push you away a million times and you'd come back a million and one more.

i love you more than i love myself and i know nobody will love you like i do,
but of all the people you could've fallen in love with, i apologize that it was me.

I.
I must have waited by that window for ten minutes
Stomach in knots, heart pounding
Tugging at my clothes
Freshening my breath
Storing away topics of conversation
Hoping you'd like me
Hoping you'd kiss me

You couldn't find my house
So I came and found you.
I got in your car.
We drove away
And I've loved you ever since.

II.
I must have been waiting by the window for ten minutes
Stomach in knots, heart pounding
Wiping up my tears
Steadying my breath
Racing through things I want to say
Hoping you'll stay
Hoping you've missed me

You walk through my door
Take back your T-shirt
You get in your car
Drive away
And you don't take me with you.

III.
How long will I have to wait at this window
Until you come back to me

THIS **** ******* *****!
You have deleted every profile picture
and cover photo with us in it,
Ten times out of Ten you changed
your laptop background of all the pictures
of us,
Forgot the song that you gave us 3 years ago,
changed your cell phone background,
deleted the cell phone pictures,
Go to sleep without thinking a bit about me,
Talk about me casually to people like I
pretty much don’t ******* exist,
And to top it all off,
You are probably the happiest you’ve ever been.
Like our relationship was nothing but handcuffs of burden
you were dying to break out of.
I guess my lies and stupid decisions were memory cards
large enough to completely erase all of our past data -
How is this so easy for you?
How is walking around campus easy for you?
How is going home alone easy for you?
How is cooking alone easy for you?
How is sleeping alone easy for you?
We have marked our forevers on every inch of this
25,000 populated resident.
I can’t go 3 feet without remembering a time where
we were here, and there, and EVERYWHERE.
How we held hands on every speck of the sidewalks,
How our favorite bus seat is now unoccupied,
And our short cuts that weren’t really short cuts,
just flatter ground to walk on because you were so
lazy to walk that way is now a ghost filled alley
of “I don’t give a ****”

What also ***** is I still do all of your habits.
Like put my sides of food on top of one another.
Or how I turn off the lights when I leave a room,
Or how I now buy that Gain powdery washing
stuff for my clothes
Or how I turn off the sink when I’m brushing my teeth,
AND how even though I am not lactose intolerant like you are,
I STILL BUY LACTAID MILK!
WHY?!
I DON’T ******* KNOW!

My mom always told me I will learn everything the hard way.
I guess I wasn’t meant to get my first real relationship
right the first time around.
Heartbreak.
I would rather wish for God to come take back his Saints
but leave me on earth’s dying wasteland
than this.
I feel like I am wasting my time saving myself for that
hint of what if called, faith
but then doubt comes along and says,
She’s gone.
She’s never coming back.
Ever.
Move. On.

It’s so hard for me.
What harder is that I know it’s easy for you.

i have been searching
for happiness
in lipstick stained
wine glasses and hazy
smiles underneath the sheets
of strangers that roughly
resemble you.

i've learnt that we're not as sad
as we are lost.
because there's a part of me
that seems to have lodged itself in you
and now i've convinced myself
i'll never get it back.
so i go around
and fall into the beds
of strangers that smell like you,
or laugh like you,
or have your eyes,
because maybe if i look hard enough,
i'll find that piece of myself again.

but every morning is the same
filled with shame laced with fuzzy sunshine
filtering through the hastily closed blinds.
and every night is the same
filled with crippling emptiness
pouring out in fleeting poetry
and labored breathing.

i would be a liar if i said it didn't hurt
because let me tell you,
falling in love with you
was like swerving into oncoming traffic.
but i still don't regret it.
and if you were to show up on my doorstep,
I'm sure i'd rip out my heart
and hand it right back to you.

i guess i never learn.

i am tired of building
my home in the arms
of strangers that vaguely
resemble your outline.
