living well,
it is an art.
life...
it comes to us
a canvas white,
but in the early
light of day
begins to add
the palest grays,
the hues from this
begin to change,
transforms in
colored shades
the joys,
the glories
and the pain.
painted in most
ardent strokes;
the boldest lines
from artist’s hand
from palette knife
his color band,
its composition
each displays
in full array,
the loving well
of ones we’re given.

though death,
it hovers
its distant border,
it frames life’s art,
and wraps its gift;
our words in ink
are painted black
our spoken love
in paper back,
cradles it
from dawn to dusk,
enables it,
displays for us
the life of it,
it adds the soul,
the why of it and
makes exquisite
art of it.

yes, even
this our end
explains the how,
the when to make
the best of it,
to live amidst
the zest of it,
and thrive though
when bereft of it.
that in the knowing,
and the viewing,
the vowing,
and the doing,
we behold
the wonder of it;
and we can say
while yet in
mortal frame...
we loved our best,
and gave the rest
...away!

the art of living well is all in the preparation... for our passing.

death, like a frame around life, makes it stand out in exquisite display; helps us to appreciate every life and every moment as art.

there is beauty in the desert... for suffering is not an absence of beauty, but an opportunity to understand love on a deeper level and behold the glory of the gift of life.

A rise of notes

A quickening of breath

A sudden explosion

of sound that never left

my ears.

It still echoes

never leaving my mind

It leaves a terribly beautiful

memory behind.

Ghost of a song

Of sadness, of pain,

of beauty that through music

shall forever reign.

It twirls and spins

through the chasm of my brain.

Today is the first day of Spring
and it is snowing
Like the first day of rehab
and you are fixing
The difference is
it is not in your
nature.

She is six, and searching for answers to questions that she cannot yet ask.
Baby, I tell her,
There are things that are broken,
And people with hearts like hammers that are trying to fix them,
Bang! Bang! Bang! Build.
Sweet-souled strangers, tending this planets bruises,
Sharing in its peoples pain.
There are children without water,
Women half dead from bearing them,
People in fear for their lives for speaking of forbidden futures, believing in the wrong god, or no god,
Or worshipping the right god wrong.
Starvation, disease, segregation, genocide, despair,
Beings in agony; others angry, warped, with sad, distorted minds,
The symptoms of a sick and stunted world.
Baby, I tell her,
You will find words to frame the questions that right now I can see behind your eyes.
You are the daughter of a dreamer,
You are trying to find your stories,
Your heart will be a hammer,
Driving your words into this weary, war-fatigued world,
Bang! Bang! Bang! Build.
*It cannot be borne, it will not be borne.

Do you mean what
you say
Do you say what
you mean?
Is this some kind of dream?

You brought me in here
you held me so close
you whispered my name
in that breathy kind of way
which I know
will sing
through
to
the last refrain.

Your eyes they softened
your touch it awakened
I surrendered to you
I held on too long.

I know now
with your leaving
soon
I'll go back to the room
from where I came
I'll be crying your name.

Do you mean what you say
do you say what you mean
Do you really always see me that way?

I thought there was
something so new
something about you
that burned
each night
through and through.

Now our eyes look beyond,
the golden ribbon is cut
lays tattered
in the changing winds
while you walked one way
I walked another
thinking about your spoken words
which said what they meant
and meant what they said.

Now what is left to say
will stay
unspoken.

I am here

I am here,
standing on this lonely street corner,
reading the graffiti
spray painted on my heart

Stuck in this concrete sidewalk
where we carved our initials,
unable to move, nor do I want to
seeing a lighted signal stuck on “Don’t Walk”

A street light glares as if happy
with the lost dog ads taped to its body
Hoping to find a missing loved one
and I know how they feel

My cardboard sign reading,
“I will love you forever”
is met with strange ****** expressions
and tooting horns

Yet here I wait, hoping, praying
you will come around that corner
A smile on your face,
pulling to the curb saying, “Hop on in”

And I always will be
if you ever need me, want me again,
standing here, arms open wide
right where you left me

I see them every day...
The ladies in my community
who have been young mothers.
Those who forsook youth
to embody motherhood
maybe too soon.
If you look closely you can
see written on their faces
that they may have missed out ...somewhere.
 "where did time go..
Was I cheated somehow?"
Learning the hard way.
Didn't get a chance to love themselves first!
------
Now, years later,
I see their yearning to play,
be free and young,
dance and sing,
Feel beautiful and be loved.

I see them every day,
These sisters and mothers,
young at heart,
whose bodies betray their young spirit and
Unfulfilled adolescent desires.

And I would want any young girl
I meet
To know that before she
Takes on the awesome burden
Of bringing new life to the planet
She must birth herself first.
And in so doing taste the freedom,
wisdom and art of
Self Love
And only then become
The Sacred Mother..
Or Not!
You don't have to become a mother to fulfill your role as a woman.

To be sentenced
to a year and a day
of life
because one must
because others have tied
their lives to you
because you have
the only job

to plod forward in faith
alone
because the thing with feathers
was crushed beneath
the branches
when its perch fell

is to exist;

it is good to live once again,
to feel the soul branch out
and green,
and hear hope
chirping at the feeder
re-hung in faith.

time is
the space in which we grow
   without awareness
   in our early years
structured by meals
   arrivals and departures
   light and dark
   hot and cold
   school   studies  play  adventures
   celebrations
and by waiting
   anxiously or not
for things to happen

time is
that feeling
that we may not have enough of it
in our later years
busy with jobs and family and travel
covering long distances in order to
achieve and educate and care

time is
what starts to rush by us
with increasing speed
in our final years
making us wonder
what it really means

that space
by which we measure
our lives
   our universes
      our worlds

there is an ache

it cuts
at moments
through your heart

   strong as the wind
   that makes the desert move

it stays with you
for all your life
until you breathe your last

  and even then
it will not be enough

Every dot takes a space
millions of dots can make
a straight line
or can create an arbitrary path

Where we are traveling
that can make life simple
or can draw a circle
that turns you again
to your home

Or an uneven line
that creates a sway
where the river moves
but can't say that
there was no space
before the big bang

Each word has a pour
that impact could be
low or loud
but some words can make
a metaphor
a poem

Can catch happiness
or sadness
can art an imagery
of nature
life

Or a thought
that can make an illusion
or a fusion between
the love and the hope
that we perches into our soul

Every bits of sound holds an emotion
thousands of bits make a rhythm
that can build a song
whether it's a song of joy

Or sad
or a true loop
that never terminate
thee love of

Or a rebel tune
that makes a struggle
for the independence
which can make an eternal
freedom song!
