30 Pieces of Silver
Michael Stefan Mar 2020
It is but a fool, traitor, and swine
That would trade love
That would trade kindness
Or friendship so true
For paltry treats
Like 30 pieces of silver

Draw your tribal ring
And watch it become forcefield
As you sleep face-up
And jilted friends bide time
For your 30 pieces of silver
May form a blade in your spine
Like, just treat people with respect and never sell out your friends.

Beneath the Willow Tree
Michael Stefan Apr 2020
Never let her see your scars
They draw a wretched map
Bright pink lines of roads you've traveled
Etched on you until exsanguination
Leading to nowhere in particular
Until you met her

Always cake the make-up on
To fill in deeply carved crags
You don't want him to say goodnight
To tomorrow's yesterday
As your tears smear mascara
While he walks the shortest way out

Always meet them under the willow tree
The lighting hits you just right
And you want to be just right
Even as you stand
On the shallow graves, you've dug
For all your ghostly skeletons

Exsanguinate
Michael Stefan May 2020
I leave trails with tracks
Of ruby and slick
No way to go back
Across rivers of Styx

My mark being left
Through pine forest dale
Each lost drop of blood
With skin growing pale

Your words are like ticks
Your frowns become leeches
Each weakening pulse
On sangria beaches

The needles you carry
Take their own little *****
You've drained all my blood
And left me anemic
Hi everyone!  Sorry I've been out of the loop for the past two weeks.  I have been working on tests and dealing with a lot of family/virus related issues.  But I'm back and plan to keep the ink flowing.  Sorry to come back with some sad poems, but that's how I usually make my entrance, unfortunately.  Cheers, fellow poets!

A Heartless Retribution
Michael Stefan Jan 2021
You squeezed
every drop of blood
from my veins

Left drained
and without
solid ground

My cadaver
almost sensuous
in its gutter

To never mutter
one more word
on this earth

It slid
like black snakes
through distant ponds

And broken bonds
compress me
into a seed

Against your will
I will grow
again

and spite your trend
of ending
anyone else
Sometimes you just feel bad and need to put the feelings into words.  Hope everyone else is feeling good today.

Suffering
Michael Stefan Feb 2020
Black blood
Pools on a white marble floor
Naked blade
Lying menacingly
Stares at you accusingly
They were there one minute
Gone the next
Slipping through your fingers
Still vermillion shades
Staining fingertips
As you shiver
Shiver so cold
Wishing a thousand wishes
For a friend and truest kindness
To wash you clean
To see your mistakes
And still, see you
Black blood
Pooling between ivory toes
The greatest error of your life
And no one
Is left
To help you clean it up
This is an analogous monologue that describes those moments when we do something we feel extremely bad about and those moments when we wish we had a friend to help us.  Although my imagery is a bit extreme, I think most of us feel extreme emotions during these times that gnaw at us irrationally.

A Guide to Fame
Michael Stefan Nov 2020
If you want to be respected
You must simply craft some clever words
To give a frame to rampant emotion
To give a *** for public sentiment
To grow and twist and tangle
To be the balanced arrow
Fired at the heart of everyone's nameless fears
If you want to be famous
Simply take the words
That everyone is screaming
And scream them the loudest
Eh, I got nothing to say on this one.  Just philosophical musings and making words to place my feelings.

Why do people disagree
With such fire in their voice
When a disagreement can be punctuated
With a handshake and pleasant goodbye?
Like, share thoughts and try to understand each other's points of view.  No reason you can't disagree on a topic and still have a candid, pleasant, and lively discussion about it.

I wish, on days of blue, to dream of you, to dream of anything, as I am ****** into eternal sky, with jagged frost that nips, and winds that spiral, tumbling from endless, into a spiteful roar, and sounds of wicked winter, tearing clothes from aging flesh, to expose the beauty, the heartbreak, and the ageless tenacity, buried beneath our flesh, and burned into our souls.  I dream of falling into another...  To share and heal these scars.
Sometimes, I have incomplete and run-on sentences that march across my vision.  Sometimes they sound alright.  Hope you enjoy this one :)

black umbrellas
Michael Stefan Nov 2020
fussin' over bow-tied manacles
and pleather braided belts
on midnight suits and bone-white shirts
-
as flags are hangin' high
on the right-hand side of silver Cadillacs
and rust-patched Ford trucks
-
stirring limply in heavy breeze
from thick thunderclouds
that always visit on lonely days
-
whilst we fall behind in convoy
of flashing red and screaming blue
towards that muddy earth patch of death
-
raising high our black umbrella
keeping rain from washing tears
off so many placid sad faces
-
from memories held dearest
to chance encounters
of even slightest recollection
-
we all hold black umbrellas
over single person lost to life
and condemned to earth herself
-
but what cosmic crowd
grips cheaply crafted plastic hilt
over the grave of earth herself, condemned
Sorry if this was such a ******.  I have been having a lot of difficulties looking to a hopeful future for society when we seem to continue to splinter and fracture further and further.  Allow yourself polite discourse with those you disagree with.  And allow them the room to speak their thoughts and yourself the time to assess the information before you condemn a person for their ideals.  And always know the topic you speak of, from research and not from cherry-picking single sources of news media.

Gun
Michael Stefan Feb 2020
Gun
I thought of cool lines with hard angles
Sliding fingers across steel burnished bright
The touch felt solid under rapt enraptured fingers
Heavy to the hand, but built so very light

This gun was my protection
It shimmered in the moonlight, built for feel
Blurring hard angles into smooth curves
Steel gave way to flesh, earthly appeal

Lubrication turned to sweat, slick with desire
This power is intoxicating, it makes me free
Silky hair took place of polymer coat
My lover was my gun
Pointed right at me
This poem describes the textile nature of love and fear.  Many have shared in a toxic relationship where we have felt powerful as if nothing else in the world mattered.  Love like guns can be dangerous if we lose ourselves in that perceived power.  Don't be the gun pointed at another person and don't let someone else be the gun pointed at you.

True Kindness

-------To My Wonderful, And Growing Hello Poetry Family-------
Your kindness lifts me like a broken bird
So gentle I lay in your strong hands
Which bandaged me, and saw me through
Nursing back my strength and will
And with you, I now fly

Your kindness guides me in my infant ways
Showing me what's right from wrong
Taking me to greater understanding
Molding my youthful mind
And with you, I now learn

Your kindness pulls me in, your broken-hearted friend
Gentle fingers caress my hair
Your smile encourages my expression
Never a barbed judgment against me
And with you, I now write

A yard of thread
Michael Stefan May 2020
She will always wear,
threadbare gloves
with jagged tears
gloves her mother
made for her
Unravel with the passing years-
draping back a yard of thread,
the only tether to her past
Just a small poetic monologue.  I thought the idea of some old and dusty piece of clothing representing a lost childhood was an image many of us could relate to.
Michael Stefan Jan 2021
Do you ever think the neighbors shout,
"See them there, through open window yonder?"
As we stand, threadbare and proud
No worldly inhibitions betwixt us
A stunning glory of aging pale flesh-
Moving with the rhythm of primal desire
And the fiercest of loyalties

Let the neighbors avert their eyes
As our combined gasps come crashing-
A tidal wave of passion-
Set to annoy these quiet streets

I wish the neighbors knew the truth,
I don't feel a drop of shame
For the things, I do with you
As you arch your back
Against my chest-
My fingers tangled through your hair
A beast both achingly hungry-
And filled with contentment

I hope the neighbors see,
When they shout to one another,
"See them there, through open window yonder"
The burning heat of our desire,
Manifests as growing steam-
A collapsing view on foggy surface
Punctuated by your clenching palms
And my big shoulders-
As love demands, we switch positions
*** as the physical expression of love and desire are key parts of a healthy relationship.  When you find the right person, your inhibitions begin to fade.  Those moments when you are truly ****; mind, body, and soul are truly freeing to the human spirit and truly wondrous in their effects on a relationship.  Find your partner in crime.
Michael Stefan Jan 2021
We all stood at battlements,
And frontline racetracks
Preparing for the longest night
When we would kiss our mothers
And say our prayers,
Hoping to be ushered
Into a brilliant light,
So bright it cleans the soul

Taut muscles and furrowed brows,
Aching with the weight,
And slick with burning sweat-
Bourne under my burden
We all stared hard-
Into the face of hate
For a government that told us nothing
And said, "You gotta fight."

Brothers and sisters stood strong-
Strongest thing you ever saw
Each of them made
Of sterner stuff
They draped that uniform
On mountains made of duty
And jawlines set-
Of utter determination

And yet,
I buckle-
Praying for the support
Of my sisters and brothers,
The comfort of the desert sands-
Whilst I wither beneath the gaze
Of a woman who's coffee order
Did not contain almond milk-
Like the end of the world rested on the edge of her cup...
I did want this to be a little humorous but still speak to the camaraderie and sacrifice that each person in the military makes.  We go through so many hard situations that we never prepare for the simple frustrations of a normal life.  Then BAM!  You are hit in the face by situations you never thought you would see.  Situations the average person doesn't bat an eye at.

Michael Stefan Mar 2020
Your intentions remain a mystery,
Like ancient language scrawled on stone,
I do not understand your secrecy,
A perverse desire to remain unknown.

You always were so foreign to me,
No matter the hours spent at dusty tomes,
No knowledge gained of any degree,
As I searched your glyph-filled catacombs.

But in brief, fleeting moments,
I swear I understood
Your hidden dialect of expression,
As your cold air blew
And I breathed you in.

Pelican and the Rock
Michael Stefan Mar 2020
You are a majestic Pelican;
powerfully built,
graceful in flight,
free as you glide the sea

Yet the sea is fickle;
throwing great squalls,
slashing with rain,
unsafe for flight

And there I am, for you;
a large rock in the sea,
a point of safety,
weathering the storm

Every time your sea gets stormy;
I stay in the same place,
being the same way,
your anchor in a hurricane

Day after day,
and week after week,
I still remain a symbol of strength
for you to escape harm

I pray that you find
a place to firmly plant your feet
because one day, I may need a rock
As my sea gets stormy,
and I become the Pelican

Sexy Sweetness
Michael Stefan Feb 2021
Explicit......  uh....  sort of*

I have wanted you all day,
Dreamt of you all night,
As my skin is flush,
And smells of hard days' work,
Sawdust, sweat, and leather,
My hands rough against you,
I yearn and you give way,
Slightly melting at my touch,
As I tear aside your covering,
Exposing you,
To the warm afternoon air,
You glisten,
As I lean in,
The heat of my tongue,
Caressing you softly,
And you fully melt away,
I will never love,
Another rocket pop,
The way I loved you,
A cold treat after a long day.
Sorry, I was feeling mischievous with this last one.  It made me snicker as I thought of it.  Hope you enjoyed and remember the seductive power of icecream.

The Queen of Pain
Michael Stefan Feb 2021
We danced through gardens of lilac and cinnamon,
Intoxicated, unburdened, and unbowed,
Lights danced on midnight trains,
One bound north, the other headed south

I walked the weft as you tiptoed the warp,
Two threads bound together,
A collision that left a messy tangle,
Never to be undone

I opened my mouth for you,
Breath life into my dying form, I cried-
You teased me at the edges,
Flirting with the idea of my eternal fade

I fell right into the seductive trap,
Like so many flies,
To carefully constructed webs,
Left to twist in sickly summer heat

I tasted your lips,
But never felt your fangs

Addicted to the taste you gave

You said you'd hold me
And I felt you
Drift away
Breakups can be really hard.  The worst is never the yelling, or fighting, but when a person just shuts themselves off from.  That feeling of hopelessness as you run your fingers along a door that is closed to you forever, and you may never understand why.

Reality Check Bounced
Michael Stefan Jun 2020
Ideology is like the Postal Service,
It always delivers a little late
But keep shoving your morals
Down everyone's throats;
Social media astronauts,
Aimed at the moon
Wish in one hand
And hold a body bag with the other,
I bet I know which one
Will fill up first

Sitting comfortably on couches,
As we ***** about life's convenience
Baring teeth at each stray dog
Who sniffs our monogrammed bowl
"Back up buddy! that one-
Is clearly labeled with my name-
Luce Goose the Spruce Moose II"

Tell me again that everyone is wrong,
And you're the only right
I think you turned left
Parking your van between Delusion Ave-
And the corner of "yeah right"
What we want,
What we don't,
And what we get,
Are three separate roads
And you have to travel each one twice
Before you got a ******* clue
Part of Thomas W. Case's "Tom Waits" poetry challenge.  This poem is inspired by Tom Waits song 'Hell Broke Luce'.  The song entails the long and pain deployment of a Soldier who just wants to get back to being a chef and sitting on his porch.  But like most people that want quiet, he is bombarded (literally) by idiocy and tragic events.  The song makes me think of an old Shinto proverb - Fight justly for just causes.  Combine that with Roosevelt's - Speak softly and carry a big stick.  The end result is make sure you are undertaking an endeavor that is right, that you are limiting collateral damage, and that you are taking actual action.  Stop shouting on Facebook and go hold a sign if you want change.  Memes don't lead to shifts in policy.

click, snap, twang
Michael Stefan Jun 2020
The mountains of Colorado,
Are tall and lightning jagged,
With high passes of ice and snow,
Broken glass breath run ragged,
When I happened upon a snag,
A slip and slide and ankle pang,
Losing bearing and losing bag,
I heard a sharp click, snap, twang

On my back in heap of snow,
With burning ache of broken bone,
Crimson pool began to grow,
And with my pain, I was alone,
But a greater pain was coming through,
A sorrowful knell, my heart sang,
Fear sunk in of not seeing you,
My heart then broke-
With a click, snap, twang
I guess I'm just feeling romantic today.  Some days the sun just seems to shine a little brighter than others.

Black-Handled Axe
Michael Stefan Dec 2020
16 axes sit along
A wall of stone and red
15 all had wooden handles,
But one had black instead
15 cut down wooden trees,
The other made wounds that bled
If only we could give respect,
We'd get to keep our heads.
This poem refers to the lack of civil discourse in our country and our lives.  Politics, media, online interactions, and so many other forms of communications are slathered in anger and a failure to understand another person from their perspective.  But as the old saying goes, "Work as a team or die as an individual."  I hope we all learn to communicate with a little more respect and kindness before there isn't a 'we' anymore.

This Broken Toy
Michael Stefan Jan 2021
For all the lies you told
While laying in an empty bed-
          You were never so good
          As you were,
          The night you floated away

                    You were like a stone,
                    Hit upon another stone,
                    Echoing through an empty hallway-
                    Your broken soul
                    Was only good
                    For breaking souls

                                                            You hurled glass-heavy bricks
                                                            Through my empty windows,
                                                            Tied on with love-notes,
                                                            Penned foul with fetid ink
                                                            And left-
                                                            Only to confuse the masses
                                                                 Of sad, stupid, people

                                        You built a paper-tiger army-
                                        Made to rush through flames,
                                        At the Chicago Fire battlefield
                                        You set in my heart,
While children sold a solemn pitcher
                                        Of kerosene-laced gasoline-
                                        For every thirsty watcher

You bled out oxygen,
And complained,
When you nor I
Could breathe.
My bandage never had a hope,
Or chance to adhere

                                                                         You spoke a tragic song
                                                                         Like a caged bird-
                                                                         Beating wings ******
                                                                         Against a solid freedom
That you would rob from me

                                           You swung away from truth-
                                           Only the harshest reality
Was a gift worth giving to me
                                           Much like an orphaned child,
                                           Handed a tattered box,
Unwrapped to find a broken toy
Who would never find a use
Sometimes, pulling the thread on a failed relationship to expose all the parts we didn't know leads to a myriad of emotion that's hard to sort through.  Hopefully, this poem helps each of you as you ride that tidal wave of anger, sadness, mania, catatonia, relief, and disbelief...  Take care and always lean on a friend that you trust.
Michael Stefan Apr 2020
Oh I can't stop these words
tumbling and falling
from empty spaces in my head
as they ride the wicked helix
from here to hell and back again
on fettering wings like bats
that get caught in angel hair spaghetti
that gets flushed down the toilet with all the other
goldfish crackers

Each shouting head
surrounds me in rings of fire
with one desire
to watch me burn
as they hula-hoop with rubic's cubes on boomerangs
set for mars or maybe Seattle

Sometimes it's just this way for me
with my mind floating free
like butterflies in nets
or sickly flies in butter
waiting for the spread
but you know it's 10 to 1
and I'm about to get knocked out
I hope you didn't place your bets
on me

I wish the endless stream of consciousness
didn't feel like emptiness
with the only ears that listen
are glued to my head
like Halloween costumes
when Jason stole my candy, called me a dandy,
and ran the hell away

It's really hard to describe
when words won't take logical form
like being gaslighted by my own brain
who wears red ribbons
and plays with ***** of yarn
on rolling farms
as the cow jumped over the moon

But if you think that the cow
was a sight to behold
my imagination's untold secrets
got something for your mental circus
I just saw purple hydras on amino acid trips
riding unicycles
wearing diapers
hanging out with Picasso
who said
"What does this poem even mean, bruh?"
And just to let you know, I was not on drugs for this.  Sometimes my brain just starts racing and I have to put what I'm thinking down on paper.  I hope it wasn't too confusing.

She wore a winter velvet
Michael Stefan Nov 2020
A purple thing of thick and soft
A velvet lace at wrists and knees
A rebellious lock of crimson hair
Fluttering in the winter's breeze
Held aloft on freckled cheeks
And billowing in all-seen breath
As wicked flakes began to gather
And bury her beneath their depth

A lambskin glove on flushing fingers
Helped to keep the heat within
As bitter winter-whitened landscapes
Hid away the Autumn's sins
And in this path towards the cabin
Her leather boots began to trod
And once again the cruel curl
Swung about with every nod

Her head was swaying with each footstep
Her heart was beating with each sigh
Her purple winter velvet doublet
Would keep her warm through winter's night
She closed the door as winds would howl
And scratch at cracks to get inside
As the fire spread through her face
She cracked a bone-white smile, wide

Another jaunt into the forest
Another scrape with nature too
Another night of simple pleasures
Of reading Proust and cooking stew
Her traps were set
Her ax was sharp
Her bow laid by the door
She had healed from the pain of Summer
And she hoped she'd see the Spring no more
This simple poetic rhyme scheme was inspired by a friend who picked herself up after some terrible issues with work and a failed relationship.  She had always been soft and loving.  But now she's tough, boisterous, and not going to take s**t from anyone again.  This poem is meant to tell you that no matter the harsh environment you face, you too will thrive one day.

Heartbeat of Life

Heart - may lead us down broken paths,
yet allows us to see the true beauty
within each other
I felt inspirational instead of morose today :)

Bound
          In flesh
Haunted tomb

Are born

We must
    Die

The Cause

Change only comes with action
Not maintenance of the status quo
Causes are punctuated by periods of blood
Better for more
Is truly the best for all

A Palindrome of Life
Michael Stefan Apr 2020
Quietly droning as you drone on quietly
hiding violent tendencies
and tending to violence
harsh words were written harshly
on paper turned over for space
made of recycled paper
it's obvious your hopeless
but oh so hopelessly obvious
as you love for them
they might love you too
fast forward to happy times
while your mind rewinds
and replays the sadness
as you sit by their side
and they slide away
you've never felt further away
then when you are at their side
things will get better
as you get better things
while you impatiently await
a measure of patience

what you need
Michael Stefan Jun 2020
like car horns, raucous evenings
they pick pick pick at your patience
"What you need is a little therapy!"
exclaimed through gritted teeth
and southern witty rejoinders
"What you need is to drink water!"
water heals all wounds,
of the head, of the heart, of the soul
"What you need is a little motivation!"
my seeds of apple and cherry grew-
but no motivation trees left in sight
if only the Lorax could see this forest now
all the motivation, water, and therapy trees-
now extinct
so my blanket of friendship
will simply have to do;
a warm cup of kindness,
a passionate phone call,
and those moments when you reconnect

friendship is what you need
I recently reconnected with a friend who listened to a lot of my woes over the last year and told me about his.  We talked about football, economics, and societal philosophies.  Sometimes it's just that good friend that gives you the pick up you need when everyone else tries to impose their own remedies on you.

days gone by

We used,
We used to
talk,
walk,
and cry...
together

speak the words
of wisdom
as we spent
a lifetime
maybe...
...forever

I dream,
I dreamt
...our first time...
such
a
firm
handshake
...like leather

but
you're gone
now
as
you passed
away...
...to warmer weather
This poem is built around several hidden meanings and always gets me teared up.  I don't think I will ever or ever be able to explain this poem to anyone.  I hope you find the meaning in it that you are looking for though, and find some measure of solace.

Worse for Wear
Michael Stefan Feb 2020
I never said you got to decide
I never really had to
You wormed your way into me
Gnawing through healthy flesh
My mind was your study
My body was your ballroom
My heart was your kitchen
You nourished as I passed away
Sometimes you're just sad and have to express yourself

pillow
Michael Stefan Jun 2020
soft and supple
together we laid
my head on your chest
soft heartbeat
quickens at my touch
my fingers trace
constellations
all in shapes of hearts
soft and supple
i could lay on you
as forever
floats away
There is something beautiful and magical about those moments of cuddling as the light gives way to the night.  Two bodies in sync.
