days gone by
Michael Stefan Mar 2020
We used,
We used to
talk,
walk,
and cry...
together

speak the words
of wisdom
as we spent
a lifetime
maybe...
...forever

I dream,
I dreamt
...our first time...
such
a
firm
handshake
...like leather

but
you're gone
now
as
you passed
away...
...to warmer weather
This poem is built around several hidden meanings and always gets me teared up.  I don't think I will ever or ever be able to explain this poem to anyone.  I hope you find the meaning in it that you are looking for though, and find some measure of solace.

A Palindrome of Life
Michael Stefan Apr 2020
Quietly droning as you drone on quietly
hiding violent tendencies
and tending to violence
harsh words were written harshly
on paper turned over for space
made of recycled paper
it's obvious your hopeless
but oh so hopelessly obvious
as you love for them
they might love you too
fast forward to happy times
while your mind rewinds
and replays the sadness
as you sit by their side
and they slide away
you've never felt further away
then when you are at their side
things will get better
as you get better things
while you impatiently await
a measure of patience

i am angry
Michael Stefan Feb 2020
why would you say those things?
why would you?  don't you know the hurt?
can't you feel what i feel when i feel?
your callousness irks me
ican'tthinkstraight
why? why would you?
don't you know words have meaning and gravity?
are you so blind and deaf and dumb and stupid
to not think i'd carry this ache
didn't you take a second before flapping your big dumb mouth?
words have meaning and gravity
they bear weight and matter
they matter to me
i am angry
i am angry
i hope your feeling of triumph is worth it
i am angry
and it hurts

sweet black trickle of rainwater in the dark
disturbing slumber of the squirrels in the park
who gather 'round to see the madman ride
upon his chariot pulled by nightmares in full stride
exhaust valves open as menagerie takes flight

elegant dark design makes space travel simple
while his horrific monkey butler bangs on cymbals
I think the title says it all :)

My love for you is automatic
.45 caliber fire
As I dream of painting you
In broken ***** tapestry
Bathed in milk and honey
As I try to nourish
And you play a flourish
On your sewer pipe flute
I am every rat in this parade
Lost forever, infinite maze
Instinctual reaction

my head on your chest
soft heartbeat

There is something beautiful and magical about those moments of cuddling as the light gives way to the night.  Two bodies in sync.

A Patchwork Song
Michael Stefan Apr 2020
April showers
bring May flowers
but winter sunlight
chills my bones

The cat's in the cradle
with a silver spoon
but your dog
won't leave me alone

If roses are red
and violets are blue
what color are my eyes
when I look at you?

If one in the hand
is worth two in the bush
then why am I
feeling so blue

Fourscore
and seven years ago
we all dreamed
that we would be free

Jack be nimble
Jack be quick
as the rest of us
march into the sea

Giggle
Michael Stefan Mar 2020
Never sweeter a sound was heard
Then the giggle of a child
I held you in my strong arms
Your eyes told me you were wild

My whelp through and through
I knew you by your face
And in your merry wickedness
Lacking embarrassment and grace

You madly pinched my finger
And squeezed it for a while
Then you giggled, then you burped
And at long last
I saw your smile
I have lived a very full life immersed in international travel, art, and outdoor activities.  And still, the most beautiful thing I have ever done was give life to and raise my daughter.  She's always going to be the light of my life.

Dirth
Michael Stefan Jun 2020
A lack,
Off the beaten path,
And without track-
Empty even of hunger,
Hollow of desire,
And slack
A mouth free of teeth,
Growing mushrooms so black
A poison of nothing-
Stretch souls out on rack
Taints vacant vacuous veins
Covered in blanket
Of fact-

Gaze upon empty,
Let eyes focus with strain,
See fallout of mistakes,
And husk left after pain
Gaze up at the sallow,
Pallid and weak,
Of humanities failings,
The topic we speak
Just a simple rhyme that I put together to speak about that feeling when everything seems to be in order but somehow, we still feel empty.

Winter Wolf
Michael Stefan May 2020
I stand alone,
A vagrant
Heavy is the silence
Under boughs of spruce and pine,
I bide my time.

I am the winter wolf.
Fanged lupine visage,
Perched atop-
Arctic ridgeline
With desolate winter backdrop

Muscles taught, I wait,
Noses twitch, a smell,
Ears that perk at sound,
A hunger won't be quelled

I am the winter wolf.
And I wait here for you
We all hunger for flesh,
It's true-
In one way or another;
The warmth of a lover,
The antics of a fool,
A wrath to spread to our fellows-
With howl and yell and bellow

I wait here for you
Desiring my lips
Against your warm skin
I crave for but a kiss-
But be wary of my fanged friends
Who have a darker wolven wish
I wanted to play around with an abrupt rhyme scheme in a piece that felt sensual yet dark.  Seductive but slightly violent.  A small feeling of loneliness with a gray and white backdrop.  I hope you enjoyed this piece.

Black Hearts and Bedlight
Michael Stefan Nov 2020
Oh, sweet monsters,
filling pages
of infinite minds
left to wander

We of blissful comfort
wrapped in nightlight cloak
and blanketed fortune
hide from fiction
and dark reality

Never could it happen
"never to us"
we think in quiet reverie
of those missing,
murdered,
and lost

But my precious,
monsters of man and woman
with blackest heart
and deadest eyes
do walk among us

Stay basked in bedlight
and wrapped in crocheted armor
and pray we stay
the lucky ones
This poem was inspired by my recent obsession with true crime podcasts and my continued deep dive into abnormal psychology for my licensure.  It is terrifying and fascinating what horrors have happened around the corner from us without our knowledge.  We never know until it is televised on the evening news.  Stay safe, stay warm, and stay smart.  You decisions keep you happy and home.

Michael Stefan Mar 2020
Oh sweet small sparrow
I did not mean to wound
'Twas cruelest of mistakes
That led me to break you

And deepest sorrow I felt
As you lay with broken wing
And my deepest regret
That you shall not sing

Your gorgeous sparrow song
Into my foolish ears
And this mistake I've made
Flavored by my tears

Were I a kinder man
I would have suffered through the night
With comfort and consolation
To see you again take flight

Candles glimmer as I imbibe
Liquids made to wash

Sipping ammonia with lemon and lime
Takes my pain away
This poem was written in late 2012 after I struggled with depression that would somedays put me into a catatonic state for days at a time.  Some times the horrors of life need to be expressed in words so you can begin to digest them.

Oh, to turn back time
A wish that all have
Standing in empty parking lots
As Chevy Impalas run towards setting suns-

-Bespoke of fetid misery wafting from the bloated corpse

Place fingers to Mickey Mouse arms;
Spinning them on titanium axis,
Praying to watch the sunrise again,
Feeling wrinkles pull taut,
And see those majestic beasts return

But 'ol Mickey keeps on waving-
His smile holds no warmth
One finger upturned and moving clockwise

We're all moving clockwise

...tick tick ticking away
The tides of time are cruel and keep on marching like army ants.

Into chilling water, extinguishing my fever
I dream of wet mud between my toes
I dream of you sitting at the shoreline
An inviting smile playing across your lips
But each time I fall in my dreams
I am met not by smiles, or mud, or water
Each time, the wind takes me away
And breaks my desire with hard reality

The Cat Came Back
Michael Stefan Nov 2020
A long lost moment of fear and dread,
A long lost friend comes to the end,
A broken lock, and wind-swept door,
And now he's gone forevermore

My life went on, I aged and grew,
My heart was calloused after you,
I never got another pet,
Another thing over which I'd fret

But then one day through open door,
You crawled back in across my floor,
Your eyes were blind, your teeth were dull,
Your face was worn, skin-tight to skull

You left a little trail of blood,
Your paws were covered in blackened mud,
I knew you'd seen an ugly mile,
But it was you, with that crooked smile

Darkness Bleeds to Light
Michael Stefan Feb 2020
Wear your silly masks, make sure they are strapped
You wouldn't want them to fall off now
Cause no one wants the know the real you
Right?
Who wants to bear our burdens
Hear the deepest of our anxieties and fears
Walk a mile in our painful shoes
And be held responsible for support
Best to keep on our masks and smile
Show everyone the light they want to see
Dance like puppets
Sing like sparrows
Bow and scrape
Curtsy and be pretty
But in our falsehoods, we are bearing darkness
In true friendships, we are bringing light
Let the mask slip from your face
To reveal freckles and scars
Different colored eyes filled with warmth
Surround yourself in light
Let the darkness of your masks fall off
Surround yourself in friendship
Always
I wasn't originally going to share this work.  It's less of a poem and more of an incomplete poetic rambling.  I've sat and stared at this for hours wondering how to change it.  It just never seems to make any more or less sense than it does in this imperfect form.  Just be real with each other and stop hiding behind your masks.  Much love.

Fraction
Michael Stefan Nov 2020
half a cup of coffee,
with two-thirds left in a day,
one-thousandth the satisfaction,
when I chose this fractured way,
only a quarter of my attention,
as I rifle through it with my hand,
no longer pain and only numb,
now I'm only half a man
Just a sad little ditty I thought up when I was looking through old Stoichiometric chemistry homework that ended up in the burn pile before moving.  Fractional coefficients get me sad, but so do other portions of this thing we call life.
Michael Stefan May 2020
I once saw a man
carry a child
out of a burning building;
and his face was burned
so badly
his village couldn't
recognize him;
I thought him
to be the child's
father
rescuing his daughter;
but
he had a blood feud
with the actual father;
each man
swore to **** the other
to maintain their honor;
yet he risked his life
for the child
of a man
he hated
more than anything;
because light
will always
break the dark
Just another war story.  Sometimes it is in the most tragic that people have the courage to be the most honorable

Away from the leather sofa
In search of greener pastures,
And even greener silken sheets

But that day is not today

Or the twilight of our dying youth
Insomnia and pondering life at it's finest

what you need
Michael Stefan Jun 2020
like car horns, raucous evenings
they pick pick pick at your patience
"What you need is a little therapy!"
exclaimed through gritted teeth
and southern witty rejoinders
"What you need is to drink water!"
water heals all wounds,
of the head, of the heart, of the soul
"What you need is a little motivation!"
my seeds of apple and cherry grew-
but no motivation trees left in sight
if only the Lorax could see this forest now
all the motivation, water, and therapy trees-
now extinct
so my blanket of friendship
will simply have to do;
a warm cup of kindness,
a passionate phone call,
and those moments when you reconnect

friendship is what you need
I recently reconnected with a friend who listened to a lot of my woes over the last year and told me about his.  We talked about football, economics, and societal philosophies.  Sometimes it's just that good friend that gives you the pick up you need when everyone else tries to impose their own remedies on you.
Michael Stefan Apr 2020
Speak thy name, watch them appear
Wicked grasp, we fill with fear
No bunkers left, for our escape
Darkness cometh, with crimson cape

Hard to breathe, as lungs fill up
Barren pantries, empty cups
Rotten fruit, falls from the vine
As nations hunger, we wait in line

Tiny demon, with mass impact
Conspiracies, without concrete fact
Markets crash, a lack of faith
Hunted by this ghostly wraith

With gloves on hands, we grasp
Masks on faces, we collapse
No news, no end in sight
This year brought forth an evil blight

Those without laid down and cried
Those with money, up and died
It came for young, and old alike
No shields worked, nor deadly pike

Wooden planks laid over graves
Dirt to shovel, with steel spades
Hard to dig, through rough-hewn stone
For the love of God, please stay at home
Please stay at home and prevent the spread of something that could take away someone else's loved one.  The parks and beaches and bars will still be there when we come out of this.  Be smart and listen to the facts, not the crazies on Youtube who have a medical degree from a crackerjack box.  Stay safe everyone and pray for those who have to put their lives at risk making sure we all come out of this.

And hats pulled back

Shoes on the rack
Socks pulled down
Shirts taken off
And underwear
Will soon be doffed
But still I'm not
Quite **** enough
For prying eyes
Are in a huff
Pull back the skin
And shave the hair
And reach your hand
Way up in there
Remove the lungs
Cut out the brain
You'll take my heart
And leave a stain
On the counter
Next to the gloves
We all strip bare
In the name of love

Watching the Fade
Michael Stefan Jun 2020
The landscape
slips off
in the distance

Steep plummets
of steel stones
and broken shells

Swirling mists
fading into
unnatural light

A touching chill
falling over
rocky beaches

A folded chair
on well-worn path

Facing East
into the mists
and steepest cliff

We all watch
the end
of the world
as chamomile
and honey
draw us
into the fade
I wanted to create something mysterious and dark that spoke of the ephemeral nature of life as we sit and watch the cliffs along a rocky coast.  The imagery for this poem came from a trip I took to Maine and sat on a cliff one morning in the misty fading Autumn.  It was truly spooky and truly beautiful.

I was in a state of happiness
While you were in another state
Crossing borderline personalities
As you shattered my reality
Our life in a state of decay
When you stated
You wanted to head
A different way
I added this note to the poem following a question I received.  Why "Convergence" instead of "Divergence".  I thought about that for a long time and decided that the word convergence sets up the entire piece by indicating that the two in the story came together.  It's the gathering of lives that begins the process of love and happiness or sadness and destruction.  That was a good question though and I love feedback.  I always want to get better at expressing what I'm feeling in hopes that someone will take solace in one of my poems and know they aren't alone in their bad situation.  :)

of tender things;
treads of gold,
and silvered strings,
with little bones
and broken wings,
buttons, pins,
and rusty springs
~
her mind was filled
with little dreams;
to be a queen,
a crown to gleam,
a rainbow bridge
out into space,
a quiet room
to hide her face
~
too delicate
for this world;
a tiny bed,
with a tiny girl,
who's window felt
like iron bars,
so she left her body
and went to the stars
~
no longer small,
no longer frail,
no longer sadness,
and wicked tales,
out in the stars
she burns so bright,
a golden glimmer
lights up the night
I am tearing up writing this.  This is a dedication to a friend who struggled to the very end.  I like to believe she won even though she isn't with us anymore.

Emotional Stability
Michael Stefan May 2020
Both feet on the ground
Quiet plains-
     No rustled sound
Empty ballroom floor-
The last patron walks out the door
Midnight in my car-
     Dreams of leaving, driving far
Both feet on the ground

An arm to grasp
We'll walk around
Staring at eternity;
At what transpired
Between you and me,
With our cadence off
Just skipping beats

Both feet on the ground

I'll hold myself
Like clouded glass
To you, I am opaque
Although I look quite stable
I'm bracing for
The coming quake
I just wanted to put my spin on the theory that we wear the mask that we want other people to see.  Rarely do we understand what's actually happening in someone's brain and how they feel.
