Metropolis is dust,
the smoke of unfaded coffin nails,
she's a sensual bonfire
littered landscape,
the burning lust running in my veins
between safety and risk,
circumcising the stage
where Dylan went electric.

"I didn’t belong to anybody then or now.”

Swing-shifting to mercenary mode,
but sinking my face value
by ordering takeout religion,
sharing a cab with Hepatitis C,
and all those sky-high boxes
and rectangles
—existing in one, spending nights
with her in another.

"Oh, lay me down to sleep
upon the trickery of time."

I used your Zeros for O's
Now I'm eating
Cheeri-zeros
I used your O for Zero
Stunned by your words
I said "Zero"...
I got nothing
When love is a bad tennis score.

alone and an imposter,
deep in syndrome.

she absorbs the frost of seasonal ghosts
and hopeless feelings
of death and darkness.

she only shows one side of her every time.
she calls a random number
from a bar in the middle of the night,
seeking to confess
or find solace in the voice of a stranger.

but any stranger might just happen to be
a lie detector.

still she lays bare all the duplicity
and fragmentation of self:

prescription bottles with two different names,
elaborate façades in Los Angeles
and in New York,
so complicated she creates
something she calls the lie box.

inside her purse there's a collection
of file cards. "I tell so many lies," she says.
"I have to write them down and keep them
in a box so I can keep them straight."

alone she waits for either
sweet apricity or identikit:
each a memento of her faces.

I have something
In my eye
I think its love
What kind?
I'm not sure
There are
So many kinds
I feel
Love takes on many forms

How did we settle for so little?
When did we migrate back
to the sea floor?

At one point I saw
our last days as children,
at one point I saw starfish
shored against the ruins,
drowning in ten directions.

In the empty space
we used to breathe,
something other than remaining:
a life in tides less current.

Pretend naps make
Imaginary dreams
Singing no lyrics
Dancing with me
Twirls I can't feel
My mouth is watering
The thirst is real
....
I need a real nap
So I can dream of you
I said I was going to take a pretend nap at lunch time and this is what came of it
