If you were a mermaid                                   c. 6.8.14 J.Ray
I’d follow you down
I wouldn’t be afraid
If I had to drown

Into the dark sea
We swim all alone
Though we cannot see
Into the depths unknown

Through the waves
And through the sand
To Pirate’s graves
Let me hold your hand

Sharks around us got big teeth
Hold you close and calm the fear
The dangers in the underneath
But the water is just oh so clear

Your hair catches the suns final ray
I hate to go now but I’ll be with you soon
In my true heart I wish I could stay
I kiss you goodbye with light of the moon
I really hope you enjoy this, critique is always appreciated!

"Nothing waits below for you", mermaids smiled, and spoke to me.
Memory fled, then all I knew was written on the sea.
Great paragraphs, on ocean swells,
In running, sodden ink,
The bow broke foam from recollections,
My wedding day,
I think.
Words rose up the sides of waves,
and flung me down the other side.
Then licked the shore for crumbs they found,
That rose up in the tide.
Heartbeat slowed, my body sank,
Turned empty eyes beneath.
Rays of light revealed your face,
Colossal, in the reef.
The poet's memories are stripped away as his life is ending.  Drowning at sea, his final sight is the staggering vision of beauty in a human face, seen formed out of the reef on the sea floor.    Inspired by a dream and after a steady musical diet of nick cave's "push the sky away", including a track called "mermaids" which contains the haunting verse:
"I believe in the rapture, for I've seen your face,
on the floor of the ocean, at the bottom of the rays..."

i’m drowing and i can’t tell which way is up
i can’t tell if i want to know which way is up

i am quaking like sand and soon my mouth will froth like the shore
it’s cold and it stings and there is so much saltwater filling my lungs, filling my stomach, filling every nook and cranny

maybe the people of the sea didn’t lure people to their deaths
perhaps they merely helped them attain it

The knifes are in the water,
there below, just beneath your feet.

The river flows with blood
of the sweetest innocents.

A mermaid escaping up stream,
against the current of the most importance.

So, where does this bottomless journey end?
This lost channel of endless hoping.

Two bodies of water,
intertwining into the everlasting waterfall.

A voyage down the rapids,
Falling...

Falling...

Falling...

Falling...

Down into the pits...There just below the waters.
Where I can rest my weary head.

Fin.
