I'm not here for the silver and gold.
I am here to find somebody to hold.
Someone to wrap their arms around me tight
And make me forget it's a cold winter night.
It's been ten years since you stole my heart.
Now look where we are.
We've come so far from the start.
As you lie with me, watching the fire glow,
I still can't believe I'm the one that you chose.
We were friends in a small town,
Then we became something more.
I can't believe i never knew it was you I was waiting for.
We were friends in a small town,
Then you said "I do."
Because of you, I believe that dreams can come true.
Last night the Dream Gods came again
And told me of their secrets.
From their collective palm
They offered a golden ingot of truth
Blowing it to me with the
Gentleness of the first sigh
And the mightiness
Of the storm to end all storms.
Suspended before me in endless darkness
The nugget silently called.
I opened my mouth to swallow gold
And in its utter stillness
Truth lingered on the tip of my tongue.

The world lies with those who bear to change it,
Yet those whom bear idle lie with nothing.
A fool’s young a wise man is old,
Neither bear gold.
Gold doesn’t have to bear glitter,
Silver doesn’t have to sparkle,
But kindness always shines through.

A Surfeit of Light
by Michael R. Burch

There was always a surfeit of light in your presence.
You stood distinctly apart, not of the humdrum world—
a chariot of gold in a procession of plywood.

We were all pioneers of the modern expedient race,
raising the ante: Home Depot to Lowe’s.
Yours was an antique grace—Thrace’s or Mesopotamia’s.

We were never quite sure of your silver allure,
of your trillium-and-platinum diadem,
of your utter lack of flatware-like utility.

You told us that night—your wound would not scar.
The black moment passed, then you were no more.
The darker the sky, how much brighter the Star!

The day of your funeral, I ripped out the crown mold.
You were this fool’s gold.

Alas, Sir Munchalot!
by Michael R. Burch

You ate too much,
your common lot;
you munched too much,
so now you’ve got
a gut.

Sparkle like the gold you are
Do your best and you will go far
Love you more then you will know
But today is the day to show
To all the world how great you are
Happy birthday to any who read

Entering a
storm about to take down the
ship and the
sailors the
cook the
captain and the
mice and all the
gold
is not as
bad as forgetting
where the
ship with its
staff and the
mice searching for
crumbs in the
gold were
headed in the
first place

How have you been, without me?
I watch you when everything else becomes tiresome,
when all the gold seems like guilt,
when all the glitter is on the ground,
when there is nothing else to see,
I watch you miss me.
