Life is such a simple thing
At 18 years of age

When you have just bought your first car
A black 95' Ford Tempo

Reconstructed title
License plate boldly bearing the name "WRECK"

Keys pressed eagerly into an excited palm
As you head home to learn how to drive a manual

You never ever did get good at operating a stick shift, did you?
Day 22: a poem about your first car

My dad talked me into buying a car I couldn't even drive myself!

The snow didn't melt at all today
I found it just like I left it
When I came out from work
In the dark of December

I shuddered in my jacket
Jingled my key and unlocked my car
With a button and a chirp
Then opened my door

The thin orange strip lay along
The horizon and darkened
With each passing second
I started my car and turned up the heat
Winters in South Dakota can feel lonely after work. Dark, cold and lonely.

the smell of smoke
and all is burning
windows melting
gears stop turning

the touch of dirt surrounds me
looking out but can't see
and this fractured place above my shoulders: an empty space...

when did we fly away?
When did we lose ourselves to fate?

I felt your halo burning beside me
you traveled far away
but I am still here drowning in silence
counting away the day

the smell of hope
my love is burning
I'm still melting
world is turning

wish we could turn back time
back to the place where we lived
where we were holding hands
breath in the air once again

wish I could reprimand
bury all of the pain
within in the sand

the smell of smoke
asphyxiating
colours melting
wheels still turning

wish I could understand
hold all of your love
in my hands
once again
A song I wrote about losing a Loved one in a car crash.

Car
In my dreams
I was a car
With no driver
No destination
And a flat tire
A deadly accident

"That car's mine,
the one on the right."

"I'm aware,
we've done stuff in there."

"oh yeah, it's been a long time,
but that could change tonight."

"I have him waiting for me."

"But you aren't dating technically. . ."

I walked back inside to the one waiting
Kissed him
As if I hadn't just changed
The amount of time
Since something happened
With a man that wasn't mine

Stupid cats scratched the car
The only good thing that happened to us
In months
