Mak  Jul 2014
my story
Mak Jul 2014
The room was silent. The only sound to be heard was the slow, steady dripping from my mother’s IV.

“What do you mean, you’re dying?”

Multiple Sclerosis was, in short, a ***** of a disease. Somewhere along the span of my mother's 35 short years on this planet, her immune system made a giant mistake. For uncertain reasons, her body began to attack nerve cells, severely affecting her brain's processing ability and mobility. The only medication that had ever subdued the symptoms was beginning to **** her.

“It isn’t an immediate thing, Makayla. I still have plenty of time.”

Turning away from my mother, I wiped tears from my eyes. There was no way in hell I was going to let my family see me cry. Absolutely no way. This was a joke. My mom was not going to die.

“Kayla, baby, talk to us. It’s okay.”

With a deep breath, I forced a smile, as I often did, and blinked away all traces of tears from my gray eyes. Turning around to meet my parents’ worried expressions, I simply nodded.

“How long?”

The question came out as more of a statement than a question. The morbid implication of those two short words spoke worlds louder than any words I could muster.

“5 years, at the absolute worst.”

At that, I stood, and left. I ran, and ran, and ran. I ran until my lungs hurt, and then kept running. But no matter where or how fast I went, I knew I could not escape the horrible reality of the matter.

The woman who gave me life was losing hers.

I was always the type of person who knew how to talk my way out of any situation.

And this time, there was absolutely nothing I could do about it.

There’s no sweet-talking death.

And with that, I began to accept her demise, and my defeat.

///

The first sip burned my esophagus, and I felt the blaze continue to my stomach, where it left a lasting warmth. I coughed a little, as the hazy feeling of drunkenness set in, setting my head spinning and my insides ablaze.

The past two months (52 days, 4 hours, and 30-something seconds) were a continuous downward spiral into a constant intoxicated state. Instead of addressing my feelings in the endless sea of counseling sessions and semi-sympathetic family therapy hours, I isolated myself. When my mother asked how I was, my reply remained the usual, “Doing great, mom.”

I was not, in fact, doing great. The alcohol wrapped itself into me, braided itself within my better sense, and I began to let myself fall apart. The wall I so often hid behind, the wall of perfection, of cool, was crumbling. Short, yet deep cuts lined my thighs, just high enough to be hidden by the hem of my shorts.

My mother had the opportunity to save her own life. Russian research had found a possible cure for the disease that had been plaguing her very existence. 3 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by a few months of intensive care, and she would be normal once again.

My mother denied the treatment.

“Too much money,” she said.

“Too inconvenient,” she said.

Compared to the life of my mother, no amount of money nor convenience mattered.

I was furious.

I was drunk.

///

My mind swam, speech slurred, fingers trembled.

My phone sat in front of me, propped up on a gray tissue box, which had been halfway expended due to that night’s waterworks. The Coca-Cola can which held my ***/coke concoction was long past empty. I was drunk, and screaming words like ‘sorry’ and ‘doesn’t deserve this’ into a pillow. I knew my mother deserved to live. Compared to me, she was a saint. I felt empty and pathetic. I deserved to die.

I convinced myself that maybe if I did something extreme, she would value her own life more than she did.

I held tightly onto the railing of my house’s only set of stairs, as I attempted to keep my balance. I walked drunkenly to the medicine cabinet, careful not to make noise and wake my parents. I grabbed as many pill bottles as I could carry.

Exactly 41 pills of assorted shapes, sizes, and colors sat in lines on my bed. Small to large, rainbow order. The comfort of organization wasn’t helping this time. I wanted to die.

Before starting my buffet of medication, my phone lit up. One new text.

“I know you were feeling upset earlier, and I just wanted to remind you that you are special. You matter.” I instantly felt even ******* for what I was about to do.

I laid down in bed, beginning to drown in my own tears, and let myself fall asleep.

Neither I nor my mother would be dying tonight.

Nebuleiii Mar 2013
To my innocence, naivety, and viridity
Childish ways, high school days.
A mere three weeks, I say good bye
With a cry, a tear, a sigh.

To blue slacks, and a polo
Black shoes and white socks
To my pink skirt, and white blouse,
Pleated, soon to be folded.

To the OHS rooms of our first and second years:
The broken windows, and tantrum-kicked chairs,
The broom box behind the spider webbed chalkboard,
Messages on the wall hand printed in red and green.

The broken doorknobs, and broken floorboards,
Carved armchairs, and eaten chalks,
Missing brooms and dustpans and garbage cans and rugs
That show up in who knows where
Stolen by jani- we know who.

The witnesses and victims
To our random laughter (from some Chinese-looking girl’s corny joke).
Our random tears.
Our not so random learnings.
The pillars of our memories.

To the PF rooms of our third year:
The storage room turned gigantic garbage can and dressing room (maybe because ours keep being stolen)
The exploding socket causing sparks to fly (and us to fly away from it), and
The amazing “alambre” lock; who knows who installed (as if that could keep us away).
The earthquake resistant rooms would be missed.

To the New High School Building of our last years:
The kicked door (not our fault!), and cancerous blinds (like hairs falling after chemo),
The jigsaw floor (not sure if better than broken floorboards),
The “Halayan 2012”, and
The mind-boggling “no key needed” lockers.

The UTMT with its fair share of mango sentences,
The old guidance office now turned “tambayan”, and
The Computer lab with its fragile yellow chairs and bruised bums.

To Ibong Adarna plays, and the half cooked uncooked Teriyaki,
Generation X (and Generation NOW! and Generation Facebook),
Jai ** dances, and cheerleading,
Kalagon Kamo Namon,
And Mickey Mickey Mouse Kabit-bintana memories.

To the NikJep Tandem,
Kanlaon Boys Behind the Flowers,
D.H.A.I.N.G. (not sure if they remember this),
Fred vs Gino version
And DewBheRhieTart.

Keep the volcanoes of memories burning.

To blue paint, and blue shirts,
And Geometry teaching us
“There are a lot of solutions to a problem.
We just have to find one that suits us.”

To saying “***”,
And cooking imbutido.
And wearing (for some designing) reduced,
Reused, recycled clothing.
And dissecting.
And parrot-Filipino teachers (she gave me P30 for load though).

Keep the river of rumination flowing.

To being scared of one whole sheet of paper,
Two becoming one,
Party rocking to make up for the tears,
And knowing we should have won.

To the hand sanitizer girls,
The Cream-o-holics,
The Canterbury Crusaders,
The Valenciana eaters.

May our tree of friendship continue growing.

To our winnings!

The glow in the dark madness,
The Lakan at Mutya clutch-heart-moments,
The Sports Fest *******,
Basketball girls’ coronation!

To the fieldtrips and failed trips,
To air conditioned crammings,
And space and time bending
To comparing notes (and sometimes other things)
Copying notes, sometimes photocopying
(Not Xeroxing)
Sharing words, phrases, sentences
And giving pictures (via Bluetooth).

May you keep walking on the right direction,

To the expectations achived,
Broken, overtaken.
All the skepticism,
Constructive criticism.

All of it.

The in-your-face-we-did-it-baby-
We-are-awesome-you-can’t-bring-us-down-
Coz-we-rise-back-up-attitude.

To the thirty-five castaways in this room
The thirty-five castaways who struggled
The thirty-five castaways who persevered
The thirty-five castaways who fought, cried, made up, laughed, shared, gave, back-stabbed, and front-stabbed, celebrated, suffered, passed
Thirty-five
Thirty-five castaways who loved,
Thirty-five

Thirty-five castaways who made it, who did it.

WITH CONTRIBUTIONS FROM MULTIPLE POETS

You don't cut, your wrists are fine.
If I was dumb enough to cut my wrists I'd have been caught by now.
You're not anorexic, I've seen you eat.
          How much, really?
You're not depressed, you smile all the time.
Yeah, because acting and lying aren't things.
     ~
WickedHope

You can't have anxiety, you talk to so many people.
Its funny how you see me talking, but don't see the panic attacks.
     ~
aesha nisar

You have a good life. There's no reason to be sad.
You're part of the reason why I'm depressed.
     ~
Phoenix

You're not angry, you haven't raised your voice or yelled.
Maybe the voices yelling in my head are so loud I can't do anything
but focus on keeping them quiet.
You're not scarred from your past, you act normal.
If normal is crying for hours at night till tears can't come anymore
and apathy sets in, then yes I'm quite normal.
     ~
Stardust

You are so lucky, it's so easy for you to be good at what you do.
You don't see the intensity of doubt and countless hours of anxiety to
get things to the point they're not too embarrassing to show someone.
     ~
PrttyBrd

You're fine. You aren't depressed, just really sad.
If I'm not depressed, just sad, then why am I here everyday?
Why am I here crying to you when I should be out, living?
     ~
Tiffany Smith

God I swear every guy you meet online just wants to bone you.
You say that like its a good thing. All I want is someone I can trust,
someone I can rely on, not someone who wants to bone me.
You have boyfriends from everywhere, india, japan, china...
I have none. These are only friends, the only one I want is you.
Your so strong.
Yea, 'cause going home to cry in a corner, then stuffing my face with ice
cream while watching sad anime is totally legit.
Are you okay?
No I'm not ok. I just want to punch both your eyes out, then cuddle with
you and make out with your face. Then maybe I'll just take a long break
to bawl my eyes out and get rid of all evidence, all but the telltale clue of
          how swollen my eyes are
     ~
Creep that Loved You

Come on. You can go to school. You're not sick.
          Physically, no. Now mentally...
Why are you so good at everything?
That's because you don't bother to look deeper.
You look fine.
Oh yeah, the red eyes and dark circles just add to my beauty.
I love you.
Yeah, it looked like it when you were 'out' with your 'friends.'
     ~
maha salman

You're so resilient. You've been through so much pain, yet here you are living strong.
That's because every time someone says, are you OK? I just smile and
say I'm fine. But none of them can hear the screaming in my brain saying
          I should just die.
You're so beautiful.
No.... The smile is fake, powder covers the circles under my eyes,
mascara makes my eyes look bright and lip stick covers the bite marks
on my lips from where I chew through them when I'm anxious, or
panicking, or being asked questions. You would be repulsed by the
          beast underneath.
You're such a talented poet.
If writing down my deepest darkest dreams, nightmares, fantasies and
memories, make me a good poet, then yes. But all I write is the thoughts
that scream to come out or my head will explode.
     ~
The Girl Who Loved You

You have never felt real pain, you are a man not a wuss.
The worst pain hits you in the heart not in the head... Whats a man
without pride, whats a man without a name?
Get over her bro, shes just one girl.
One girl that I chose to love out of the 7 billion other people in the
          world.
Open up your heart to new people new things.
What's the point in meeting people, when in the end they all just leave?
You aren't alone.
I'm not alone? You lie through your teeth, where where you when I sold
my soul to the devil and condemned myself to the abyss?
We are proud of you always, son.
Words I've never heard, just the echoes of my parents inside my head.
You live a great life.
That's not the message the untouched prescribed sleeping pills and           ecstasy portray.
     ~
grld

You're so patient.
On the outside yes, in the recesses of my mind I'm screaming my
head off... waiting for something that will never happen.
     ~
Julian Pacheco

Who cares about the others? You're not like them you're different.
What if I don't want to be different? What If I want to curl up into a
ball and pretend I don't think I'm failing you every moment of the day.
Life's not fair.
Well maybe it's time it should be. Maybe it's time for us to stop
thinking that we deserve more because that's all we've ever known.
Maybe it's our job to MAKE life fair.
Forget it, move on.
I don't want to. Shouldn't everyone be able to hold onto the things they
hold close? If they were holding it close it meant something and if it
meant something good then it's worth fighting for.
Shut up.
No. This time I won't be quiet because I sit here and I listen to what you
say every day; you treat whoever you want however you want and that
is not your right. Everyone has an opinion. I want to share mine.
     ~
Forgotten Dreams

You're so confident.
Only because you do not see the pain and turmoil it causes me
inside, and the sores inside my cheeks to keep from crying.
Why are you shaking? It's not even cold.
Because I'm scared, scared of scenarios untrue.
~
Makayla

You're not sad, you look so happy.
Tell that to the guys who keep pointing all my flaws, and laughing
about it, leaving me speechless because I have nothing to say in return.
You're such a good writer.
And look how handy that is, won't ever shut them up for good.
You still have so much to live for.
To keep living like this, might be considered anything but living. You're
all too perfect for this world, but you know what? My body can't keep
living in a different place my soul is.
     ~
A Sad Sam

Chill out man, it's just a couple people.
To me, three people is like three thousand people. Their voices circulate
in my head and drive me crazy until I can't help but break down. You're
right, I should definitely just chill out because I don't know anything
about the disorder that brings a constant burden to my days.
Why are you so antisocial? Get off the computer and do something productive for once
Try the fact that everybody that surrounds me makes me feel like the life
I live isn't worth living and the comfort of understand people on the
          internet keeps me sane.
You're so lazy.
Don't you dare start on that, because every ******* day I wake up and
breathe despite my lungs collapsing in on themselves from all the
pressure people give me, and every single day I do the work I'm told to
do and I'm trying my hardest but I'm fighting a war with myself and it
takes up every ounce of energy I have left. Don't you dare tell me that
I'm lazy when every day I take all the strength I have to keep on living.
     ~
Emma Tauzell

They had never met, didn’t know each other’s name --
Yet their eyes were already making love.
     ~
Deborah

You can't really love someone you've never met.
He's the first thing on my mind when I open my eyes, the last
thing I think about before I go to sleep, he's in my thoughts all
the moments in between, his face takes away the nightmares and
fills all my dreams. How is this not love?
     ~
Just Melz

Just forget about her and move on.
How am I supposed to do that, when all I see is her and her
precious qualities I so dearly love in every girl I talk to?
Forgetting is a lot harder to do than finding.

Home is where I grew up
It's where we buried my favorite dog
It's the yellow and red tulips in the back yard
It's the memories of the celebrations and holidays
It's where my friends were
It's the tennis court on the next block
It's the elementary school we walked to
It's the library rock wall that we walked along
It's the skating rink we go to every Friday night
It's where I grew up
It's the kitchen where the height measurements on the door frame still stand
It's the closet from my room where I hid my secrets
It's the long nights I stayed up laughing with my sister
It's achievements I was awarded
It's the kitchen cabinet where I would always hide
It's the memory of my brother and how he treated us
It's the barking in the middle of the night when we got our new puppy who is now bigger than I am
It's the shed in the yard next door where I had fun
It's the memory of my neighbors
It's the nights I spent grieving with my sister
It's Jimmy joining in the army
It's where I got most of my injuries
It's the sleepovers with my friend Tennison
It's how me and Makayla danced in the dining room
It's my job as a babysitter and a dog walker
It's my crush living at the end of the block
It's the abandoned house where we hung out
It was the trips to JR's house
It was where I learned to ride a bike, crochet, play soccer, basketball, tennis
It's where I discovered myself
It's the memory of packing and moving out
It's Greg and his family trashing my dad's hard work
Home is not riding the bus to school
It's not my brother moving out
It's not the drama
It's not the bad things that have happened
It's not the hospital bills
It's not the white picket fence in the front yard
This may be where I live and I know my thoughts will change but for right now
This is not my home.

her.
Hanna Kelley Jul 2015
She makes me so happy that I can't explain what my life would be like without her.
She has been there for me in some pretty bad times.. even when I didn't want her to find out I was in pain.
She knows me more than I know myself.
She shows me different sides of me that I didn't know existed.
We've had some fights and there are still times when I want to bash her head in with my own fist.. but I love her death.
I would risk my life for her and I know she would do the same in return although I won't let her.
I can't stand to see her upset, it makes me feel like I have to make things better so she can be happy..
But she pushes me away so it gets harder to do.
We are inseparable.
We have been with each other since the beginning and we'll end that way.
Seeing her happy and laughing can brighten my entire day.
I am lucky to have her as a sister.
Even though I may get mad and push everyone away, I appreciate that you've never given up on me.
Thank you makayla :)

The energy currently flowin throw my veins
It's this weird thrill of happiness
Becuase I Like someone
And I think they like me to
So now I can tell my  x-lover
That I feel for another
And that we need to stop seeing each other
Becuase soon I'll be with the other

(Background knowledge) So I'm still currently in love with my x but I feel like all my x does is string me along when he feels like it, he treats me like I'm a game he's playing, I love him but I'm always trying to find a way out. This boy might steer me off of his road. At least I'm hoping.
