Fortress

Stone by weathered cobble I build,
calloused hands ache in sweet surrender
Mortar’d affection of a coalesced consistency,
mixed and blended, bound by love’s tether

Stacking to heights of protective design
Patterned on roaming hillsides, serpentine wanderings,
Lush green fields crawl, blue sky diversions,
as song birds whistle to the day

And I sweat, my brow now drenched,
muscles pushed to horizonary boundaries,
tattered clothes sway in late afternoon breezes
Still I push on, fitting, finding, filling this need

Something so precious as glistening morning dreams,
crystalline musings, fragile bisque castings
Destined for my world, beyond battlefield dawns,
sifting serene country settings…quite peace

The long day ends, I marvel at my accomplishment
steadfast and suited to defend in sunset flames,
turrets of observative reachings soar above
timber and heavy iron chain…gated sanctuary

Now my love you may rest…
beneath starry heavens and comet renderings,
upon your bed of satin feathered sighs…
For I have built this fortress…around your heart

Sometimes I walk,
but most days
I am running away

I told you over the phone
That you were as beautiful
As the stars that dotted the sky
But you lived in a big, bright city
And could only see a few dozen
While I could see thousands
You couldn't know the half of it
So I told you over the phone
That you were as beautiful
As the stars in your new lover's eyes
And you finally understood
"Normally, about 2,500 individual stars are visible to the human eye without using any special equipment. But because of light pollution, you actually see just 200 to 300 from today’s suburbs, and fewer than a dozen from a typical city." How sad is that?
after four decades of protracted debate
as to where to locate a second airport
our federal government has finally made a decision
to go ahead with the construction of the airport

they've not been overly speedy
in their deliberations on the matter
all the public has ever heard
is an endless stream of chatter

now the memorandum of understanding
for its location has been signed off
we the citizens of New South Wales
can't wait for a jet plane to take off

the existing airport terminal is becoming
more and more congested by the day
and a second airport facility
will sweep all the clogging away

we're mightily pleased that the government
have got moving on the airports location
now the flying public of our state
shall afford them a rousing ovation
to-day I discovered
that I hadn't done my tax
which only goes to prove
that I'm very lax

it has been two years
since I've lodged a return
presently I'm filled with worry
and mountains of concern

I could be paying a big fine
to the tax department
for I had gone well over
the date of lodgement

the commissioner of tax
won't be too happy with me
as in preparing my tax
I wasn't an early birdie

the tax office isn't
a forgiving institution
more than likely
it'll be out for retribution

this afternoon I got all
of my tax affairs posted away
as I don't want to be seen
as a taxpayer who won't pay

i cannot believe
it has taken me so long
to realize that you
were never coming back
and that when you said
that it was over
you meant it

i cannot believe
it has taken me so long
to realize that you
are never going to see these tears
nor read those poems
and that i
was only wasting my time

Unseen

As if I am not even here…
Unseen by everyone, including myself
Not even a shadow exists
of any form that I recognize as mine

Even though you could see me, you don't
Staring through the dotted lines
of where my heart used to sit
in silhouettes long faded…forgotten

My hand before my face is not there
A heavy fog sifts the loneliness
No foot prints in the mud
remain of where I may have walked…untouched

Still I see you…you smile,
not at me, but somewhere beyond
Running through me, an invisible past
reaching for another…who smiles too

As if I am not even here…

Don't eat those pomegranate seeds
Don't gloss those beautiful lips
With the sticky liquid of death
Heaven seems so far away
When you're stuck in hell
And the devil has an incessant need
To deform all things beautiful
And to separate you
From everyone you love
And the ashy snow will fall
Until you're with me again
Because all I have is memories
Of you dancing in the spring blooms
But now you're laying among asphodel
And I know it's hard to see the other side
Because depression has a relentless need
To touch all things pure
But I know
Spring will come again
