Waves
Zonika van Zijl Nov 2015
Your words, they wash
all over me
and then crash on my shore.
Sometimes I wonder what all this
fighting is for?

You breathe in deeply,
over and over again,
knowing that's how you gain control,
while I try to recover from
the tsunami, that you've caused in my soul.

I must have known,
the full moon predicted,
that your temper would be high.
He also said I should leave,
so this is my final goodbye.

Why?
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
Why do you so quickly forget
The pain you've created?
Your sweet words healed my heart,
But there were too few in comparison
To those I have hated...

Why do you write me off like a
Shopping list on a piece of paper somewhere?
And when you were done using me for all your needs
You threw me away, tell me, do you even know
The definition of care?

Why do you still smile
And laugh so much?
Don't you feel any hurt or pain?
Well I hope your grin will be wiped from your face,
As you get hit by a moving train!

Little blue lace
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
Little blue lace,
I wore on my wedding day.
It represented my grandma
In every single way.

How she loved sowing
A little lace on everything.
I remember the lovely melodies
Her Singer could sing.

My wedding dress was naked
Without a little lace.
So my something old, new,
Borrowed and blue was represented with grace.

Me as a little kid
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
I remember as a little kid
how life seemed,
how crazy the things were
that I so easily dreamed.

How I wished for adulthood
while holding an ice pop in my hand,
how I imagine living in the castles
I builded out of sand.

But for a life like this
I weren't ever prepare,
yes I got the tale
but it's sure not fair.

Maybe if I got the chance
to go back to yesterday,
I would've appreciated the time
I still have left to play.

When the heat of life gets too warm
I will plant me a tree,
Between the flowers I will sit down
And watch the dance of a bumblebee.

Then I will get hungry
And start searching for food,
My tummy will exclaim
"Berries will be good!"

I will find them
In my forest's heart,
Cause then, I knew,
Food is where all great things start.

Now standing here
In the center of it all,
I realise this is more than
My own planted forest,
This is my soul.

A new beginning
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
Don't you sometimes wish
for something new,
like having an opportunity
to be a better you?

Don't you sometimes wish
for a brand new start,
to get a chance of playing
with a different card?

Don't you sometimes wish
to be another person,
maybe still you, but a
better version?

Don't you realise,
the past is someone that you were?
All we have now,
is the present to endure.

So stop trying to
change your yesterday,
and rather start focusing
on living now in a better way.

Where the wildflowers are
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
Let's walk hand in hand
where the wildflowers are.
Let's draw flowers
on an old VolksWagen car.

Let's plant seeds next
to every road.
Let's decorate the pavement,
with a flowery quote.

Let's start tending the rainbow
on the ground.
Let's just do something,
before there's no flower to be found.

The African soil
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
My country, the African soil.
Where all the animals,
Gets to toss and toil.

The warmth, the ground.
The different animals
To be found.

The plants and trees
Giving life to all.
From the smallest of zebra's
To the giraffe standing tall.

The African joy
At the setting of the sun.
All the baby animals
Playing, having fun.

I hope you'll one day
Get to see.
All the beauty
South Africa seems to be.

Being women
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
Being women

We are women metallic strong,
working hard all day long.

Creating a future we want to have,
dreamed up once from a bubble bath.

We are fierce, yet gentle beings,
we somehow think with our feelings.

We are women, let's scream out loud,
"WE ARE WOMEN AND WE ARE PROUD!"

The lonely little green hat boy,
Who sat near the train.
He looked so awfully sad,
And had a face full of pain.

I walked pass him
To get a better glance.
Then he suddenly
Asked me to dance.

I froze and stare
With confusion in my eyes.
Then my mind filled
With a million why's.

His little outstretched arm
Looked like an invitation.
It was absurd,
I can't dance at a train station.

But then I looked closely,
His hand was pointing at the ground.
Where there should be legs,
There was non to be found.

So I couldn't help myself,
I started to cry.
My mind was now filled,
With not a single why.

As I walked on,
I began to joyfully dance.
The boy was now smiling,
As I gave him a last glance.

So the boy without legs,
Was left smiling.
I had both mine,
Why was I crying?

The road less travelled
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
I want to take the road less travelled,
I want to run in the dirt,
I want to swim through the ocean,
I want to fly like a bird.

I want to take the road less travelled,
I want to jump out of a plane,
I want to float in a boat,
I want to catch a random train.

I want to take the road less travelled,
I want to climb the highest tree,
I want to dance in a mystical forest,
I want to be inexcusably me.

A little more tea
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
A little more tea Miss? His voice suddenly grasps me back to reality.
His politeness has always been
his best quality.

Yes Jerry, some more tea
will be fine.
I wouldn't say, but lately
I do prefer to drink wine.

His old shaking hand pours just enough, like his butler hand was taught.
Into the finest pink teacups my grandmother once bought.

How I long for my childhood days where I didn't need to sit and drink tea all day.
How I long for the days I was still young and free to play.

Now it's me and my lady like life,
where I'm only allowed to dream about becoming a mother and wife.

The day I wished
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
The day I wished for you to see,
That you were born to be free.
You were created with an Artist's hand,
You were formed from Mighty Breath and sand.

How I long for you to know your worth,
You have been perfect since your birth.
Stop judging an artwork so rare,
And start handling yourself with care.

You know not the beauty that you hold,
You were created to be both brave and bold.
Stand up and don't give an ear,
To all the negative comments born from fear.

Searching for the one...
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
You see, I have this thing,
Where I'm looking for the one.
Maybe a streetdancer,
Or a preacher's son.

I know not what to expect,
So I dismiss them all.
Thinking he'd be right around the corner,
But instead I walk into a wall.

It is quite tiresome,  not knowing
Who he might be.
I don't enjoy this window shopping,
Although it is free.

I want to commit, and only
To the one.
Knowing you might be a
Prisoners son.

I promise you
I care not for this.
As long as our future is filled
With great happiness.

To be honest, my soul misses
Her mate.
And she's tired depending
On fate.

Waiting, I know,
Is all I can do.
But can't you perhaps trade your
Espadrilles for a running shoe?

A letter from a widow
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
Where are you now?
When I need you most....

Where are you now?
My darling I feel lost....

Captured in these nightmares,
People seem to dream....

Where are you now?
You and me, we were the greatest team....

But you left,
Left me in this grey....

Your sunshines,
I forget, each passing day....

The way your eyes just shined,
And brighten up my life....

A letter from a widow,
Wishing she was still a wife....

Your forest
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
Oh the undescribable beauty
That your forest hold,
And how much it tells
Without a single word being told.

Each and every wanderer
Being called,
By the sun shining through the trees
Looking like little streaks of gold.

The pathway that leads to total
Freedom of the soul,
And you're in your element
When the birds starts to call.

Oh how truly beautiful
Your forest are,
It's just sad
That it has to be so far.

Hope's birth
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
It was rather beautiful how the world began to fade,
As she decided nothing will control her anymore.
The day she realised that her journey will be to liberate,
All those who feel trapped by a locked door.

Her path was clear
and her mind open wide.
She was to lead
the hopeless to the light.

To be a beacon
and show there was a way.
That moving forward wasn't an option,
if they choose to stay.

The hopeless people
took a stand.
All were fighting,
hand in hand.

Taking control over
all the earth.
And that's the story
of Hope's birth.

Shake off the past
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
It is simple,
You need your **** to move,
To start this shaking groove.

Let the rythm get in sync,
With all the things
That you think.

6, 7, 8... 6, 7, 8...
The movement of your feet,
Stepping side to side,
One with the music's beat.

Now, dance for as long
As the music last,
That's the easiest way
To shake off the past.

Typing my love for you
Zonika van Zijl Oct 2015
Today I will type my love for you,
Sharing my feelings about the things
you have put me through.

My sunny days you filled
with rainy clouds,
My peace and quiet
with horrific shouts.

A thin line between
love and hate,
I guess my love for you
is not that great.
