Absence
I scream out to god
Expecting an echo back
Lonely summer night

Democratic death
The scales of justice lean right
A tattered flag hangs

Under the London Plane Tree
Sweet spring morning peace

Warm Pain
Blinded by the sun,
So why can't I look away?
Finally - a cloud.

Dependence
Bottles line the floor
Cheap merlot runs down the wall
Tears run down my face

Support from the soil,
Desire to reach the sun first,
What makes a tree grow?

Cigar
Sabrina Shapiro Dec 2024
Smoke rises like clouds
Ripe leaves, dark as the night sky
Ashes fall like rain
Years later I still struggle with the loss of the friend who introduced me to the world of cigar smoking

I WILL REMAIN
Sabrina Shapiro Nov 2024
Is it a swan song?
Plea for help, etched on a bench
Carved into my mind
Somewhere unimportant there sits a vandalized bench. Etched into it, "I WILL REMAIN".  I hope you have, stranger

Ode to a Fallen Wall
Sabrina Shapiro Nov 2024
Oh fallen wall, you crack and lean yet stand
A piece is lost, a piece is found, you try
To show your prize, but hold an empty hand
You grasp and cling to painful things, but why?
You wear your badge with pride upon your head
You're hurt, yet strongly rooted to the ground
Some broken bones, but still you aren't dead
Suppress your doubts and let those feelings drown
You're meant to stand and guard this land nonstop
No time to think, just stand and don't look back
Yet still you ponder if you're just a prop
And if they come will you withstand attack?
And now you brace as men draw near with swords
They climb right through, ignoring your awards
