FLASH

"the exposure looks kinda funny"
"maybe just adjust the aperture a bit"
"add in the lighting"
"is the white balance set?"

the chair squeaks as it moves to the left
the weight shifts the couch in their direction
heat radiates from the family
whose fake smiles are nearly as blinding as the flash from the camera
despite the tripod, the camera sits off kilter
like the uneasy tension in the room
it feels hot--no, sweltering
unsettled emotions sit like
discarded mail
away and out of sight

CLICK

"Okay, we're good"

and the family heads off in their separate ways
with no goodbyes for the others
inspired by dean's dayfly

you were the photographer
that never photographed me.
"if you want to learn what someone fears losing, watch what they photograph"
you never loved me you liar
Marthea Flores Mar 2019
You held her hand,
I held my pen.

You kissed her lips,
I kissed your photograph.

You loved her once,
I loved you forever.
Captured moments in time
Nestled between my fingers
A treasured piece of that time
Past feelings tend to linger
Back to when you were mine
Caught within a frame
I hold this piece of you
The only piece unchanged
Unlike my love for you
People tend to fade
Into something unrecognizable
Familiarity ceases to remain
When I say I love you
Tis a lie that holds some truth
Reserved for the person you once were
My beloved that you outgrew

Don't be sad because I am gone,
Be happy time was shared so long.
For the memories we created and the love we treasured.
For I am never far, I am always there.
For I watch over you, as you soundly sleep.
I visit you in your dreams, so you can see me.
I listen to you in your prayers,
I am the breeze of the fresh summer air.
In the familiar smell, I am the memory.
In the tears, I am the weight off your shoulders.
In the warm embrace, I am the hug.
I am the goosebumps, when you think of me.
In the happiness, I am the sun shining bright.
And In the photograph, I am the story of a beautiful life.
The photo you took
and then gave to me
still hangs framed
above the altar,
next to the calendar.
Should I have taken it down
when your words slipped away?
Perhaps.
But it hangs as a reminder
to hope
for Lovely, Wonderful,
Improbable things.
