valentine Aug 24
i will continue sleeping
and the wild horses will keep on running
with each gallop of their hooves
they'll match the clap of my heart
until they trip over themselves
with exhaustion
breaking their ankles
and never rising again

We watch for rattlesnakes as we walk
And after nearly bitten by death
Grab them by their gleeful heads
Deep holes we dig
Soon doused in gasoline
Where the creatures are flung atop their brethren
The devil's eyebrows curling into one another
Soon enough
The sparks fly from our feet
Slabs of flint scraping and gliding

Calling ourselves civilized as we waltz above
The rattling of natural beauty

drove down to the cemetery
hitting potholes head on
down gravel roads
praying a hole six feet deep
filled by a cushiony bed
would welcome me with open arms
and a sermon to bless my slumber

drove up to the grange
tires skidding and kicking dust
up in the dirt parking lot
wishing upon an American flag
stars torn up by the wind
that those gusts would lift me up
and give me a ride to heaven

driving up and down this hill
over and over
when i should've driven to the airport
and left the world for good

endlessly she looks on
lashes never flinching
no lids weighed by metal
to blink as you rock her
imaginary tears to fall

a little box freshly made
smells of melted plastic
made by wrinkled hands
with eyes shut tight
droplets soiling the exterior

the night her wisp of a candle
dimmed and turned to smoke
i held her in my arms
knowing she couldn't hear me
yet still sang that lullaby
the one that played each time
you pulled the string attached
to her back

and when i peaked down at
the window of her entrapment
my weepy eyes reflected on
her cracked porcelain skin
i imagined her mint condition
just like the day
i brought her home

Elvis woke me in the afternoon
He told me
Church was over
That I missed the Sunday service
Yet I still heard the choir
Just down the corridor

I prayed on the steps of Graceland
To a statue of a lion
Cascading in the light
Spilling off stained glass
He told me
Winner takes all
And I gambled my heart
Right out of my chest

Sliding out of my shoes
I fell down the stairs
And landed in a hotel bed
Picket fence lining my frame
The devil told me
My alarm was going off
But I like to think it's all apart of
My American dream

you never noticed
the houses
littering the field
you grew up watching
from the backseat of
your parent's van
until the moment
you looked left and right
at the stop sign
and realized
your favorite angle of
the mountains
where you could see
the brook
between the pines
form a jagged line
down down down
covered up by
a dozen miserable
4 bedroom 2 bathroom
greyscale houses

my heart is hole punched
hidden in the back of my folder
rings clamped tight
to keep it from fluttering away
and though i don't write in pen
my words still bleed
ink smudged arteries
