Just Chemistry
Umang K Jan 2015
You can literally manufacture it in a chemistry lab;
There are formulae and measurements of hormones that add up
To this supposedly tangible entity

A nicely brewed test tube
Of elaborately named chemicals

The very thing that makes you tremble in your skin,
That has caused wars and set ships assail
Confined to a liquid in a glass container

Honey-coloured skin
Covering
Over-used bones and
Abused muscles
That have seen the inside
Of blisters
And bruises, hidden beneath
Mismatched, jarring wool
And tight, black
Material that only just
Manages to contain her.

Orange skylines with
Copper inconsistencies,
Cobbled pavements
Converging, at odd angles,
Stepped on
By fairytale homes
And tourist feet,
Almost, just almost,
Drowning out the violins
And the voices,
Almost making me forget
That Europe isn’t home,
Somehow.

Au Revoir
Umang K Mar 2015
Snow-covered
Memories
Of wooden homes
And thistle bushes,
And flowers the colour of
Almost spring, and
Frost-covered
Eyelashes,
Releasing crystals
With every blink;
Descending tufts
Of white littleness
Thawing
Against skin

Autumn reminds me
Of your fingers and
The way your hands
Held mine, and it’s
Strange because
Even autumn’s reds
And pinkish browns
Never went together
As well
As you and I
Could’ve done.

Wheat fields and red hair,
Swirling forms and
Defiant impressions of
Iris blossoms and
Almost-rotten sunflowers
That fell limp across
Table tops that housed
Tools – abused and nurtured,
That created pictures of dreams,
Imprinted on the crevices
Of a terrifyingly misshapen mind
That was filled with hues
And visions of impossibilities,
That made the world look
Like the paradise it never could be.

Sounds
Umang K Mar 2015
There’s silence except
For the imaginary sound
Of minds turning and
Pupils dilating as bodies,
Hundreds of them,
Find their way around
Strange corridors,
And of footsteps and
Heaving lungs as calm,
Yet manic crowds throng to
Different corners,
And that of the thrum
Of intrigue that pulsates
Through the walls and
Into the floor, and of the
Pulsating veins and
Shallow breaths of those
Within.
