Sometimes a threat
Feels worse
Than what’s to come

It’s the feeling of
Ambiguity
And the itch of not knowing

Acknowledging that there’s danger,
But what kind?
It’s unknowable until the moment

Like a bespectacled man
Inside a dark cave
He has the tools, but cannot work

When you can’t lash out
Or even caress
Whatever can do both

When you can’t outsmart
Or out-stupid
Whatever does neither

When you can’t run away
Or charge towards
Whatever needn’t move an inch more

That’s when you let
Instincts
Take you out for a spin

When logic and words are replaced
By snarls and roars
And that’s honestly the best sounds available

When careful movements are ditched,
Flailing arms and kicking legs reign
And you feel every muscle in harmony

That’s when you lose your humanity
But win the fight
And that’s what really matters

But did you really win?
I mean,
You lost your mind wrestling a thought.

The first day,
I met you.
My life changed.
I believed.

The second day,
You said "hi!"
Sparkling eyes
And bright smiles.

The third day,
We had lunch.
Ribs for two
And a flan.

The fourth day,
I loved you.
Did you too?
I hoped so.

The fifth day,
You said no.
You grew cold
Like ice cream.

The sixth day,
We stopped "us"
Back to nil;
Tears were shed.

The last day,
I walked past;
You just shrugged.
We're strangers.

I grew up in the country
Where greens and blues reign supreme
Where the stars shine bright at night
And the air smells like the air

I grew up in the country
Where your friends are really friends
Where animals run amok
And I relish the warm sun

Now I live in the city
Where it's grey as far as sight
Where the sky is just a haze
And now I cant even breathe

Now I live in the city
Where most your friends are strangers
Where horns and smoke rule the road
And I lock myself at home

I want to go home
Where the grass touches the sky
Where the clouds are white
And I can take a deep breath

I want to go home
Where I can trust peers freely
Where I can hear myself think
And I be free once more

Red
Like blood on white tile
A fair maiden's lips
Your hair last summer

Blue
Like a choking man
A child's eyes glist'ning
Your fav'rite color

Yellow
Like weathered parchment
My mother's long hair
Your car's bright paint job

Green
Like moss on a rock
The leaves on a tree
The passport you left

Purple
Like bruises on skin
Orchids on a vine
Your prom date's necktie

Orange
Like fire cleansing all
The light on my porch
The sun on your face

Brown
Like earth we'll return
A mug of cocoa
And some sourdough bread

White
Like pale, frigid skin
My face when I saw
What you have become

Black
Like life without you
A life without you
My life without you
