The simple things in life
Come pretty easy to me
Like tying my shoes
Or knowing when I should eat

I have no problem per se
In rolling out of bed
Or in the combing of hair
That sits on top of my head

It's being an adult
That has my hands tied
No matter how hard I try
I just can't seem to get it right

I can sit in front of the T.V.
Give it my best binge
Watch the world collapse around me
With remote still in hand

I am fairly adept
In the realm of color schemes
So I rarely need help
When it comes to dressing me

And never have I forgotten
How to ride a bike
But being an adult hurts my noggin
As I can't seem to get it right

I'm a pro at teeth brushing
And keep them pearly white
And no longer feel the need
To use a night light

All of this and more I can do
Finding it easier than said
Oh and before I forget
I can even make my bed

Walking tall amongst it all
With sturdy legs enjoying the ride
But apparently this adult thingy's not for me
As I can't seem to get it right

You are the ink and the pen.
I have ideas and stories, but they're lifeless without you in my hand.

You are the paper and the desk.
I long for adventure and fantasy, and you're the canvas that will carry them.

You are the lamp and the warm mug.
When evening's shroud envelops us, you touch my face and kiss my lips.

Stay in my hand, and we will write a world.

When I wither in times of drought
And my roots become weak,
When my petals wander and blow
From even the slightest breeze
Water me.

When I shiver in times of winter
And my bones become fragile,
When my skin goes numb and I break
From even the gentlest touch
Warm me.

When I can't walk in times of travel
And my feet become ash,
When my human frame crumbles away
From even the minutest weight
Deliver me.

When I breathe in times of pain
And my chest becomes still,
When my burden is heavy and dark
From a life lived in shadows
Illuminate me.

Stay

You're the sand in my pail
When I'm making a castle.
You're the wind in my sail
When I need to go faster.
You're the salt in the air,
You're the waves on the sea
You're surrounding my chest
Like the sand on my feet.

Why is life so amazing
When we build each other up,
When we push against boundaries
And never give up?
As we sit and laugh forever
On the dunes by the shore,
I see the life in your eyes that
You've never lived before.

White sand stuck to your lips
Hair in braids, hands on hips
Is this a hit or a miss?
Is this ignorant bliss?
Is it selfish to say
That I want you to stay,
Like the embers of sunset
Dancing out on the bay?

You're the sand and the wind,
The gulls circling in
Search my heart for the things
That are written in sin.
You're the salt and the waves,
You're the reason I pray.
You're the woman I breathe for
And I wanted to ask you to
Stay.

Save me a place at the table
My little white flower
That sways in the breeze.

Please hold my seat if you're able
I'll love you forever
After all the wine from bottle flees.

Set me a plate and I'll stay full
My hunger endeavors
Your warmth was always mine to be.

To an aspiring author,

You may not realize it yet,
But you are a legend.
These words that you are writing,
These words that are a reflection
Of your soul
Of your beliefs
Of your passions
They will become your legacy.

These words that are falling from your pen
Like meteors falling to earth
Like snow falling to the ground
Like rage and sorrow and joy and hope
They will inspire millions in years to come.

My dearest author,

You may not realize it yet,
But your words are eternal
And your stories are everlasting.
As long as they are on paper
As long as they are on a screen
As long as they are written
They will become your legacy
And your legacy will become you.

Author,

You may not realize it yet,
But though your life may fade
And your breath may perish
Your words will last forever
Graven into paper
Etched into the world.
Poetry,
the reason for
and why it has to be.

Words will mean little
If they're dead on arrival.
Live within your words.
