Ya Know ...
I Always Find It... Funny...
When People Say To Me...

That... “ I’ve been Lucky ! “...

As If They’ve Gotta Clue...
of The Things That I've Been Through... ?!?

I’m... OLD Enough Now...
To Know What’s FOUL... !!!
And To Know That Some Mouths... !!!

Should... THINK About...
What It Is They See In Other Peeps’... !!!!

Cos’ It’s BETTER To KNOW... !!!
BEFORE... BARING Your Soul...
About What You... " Think "...
About The Next Mans’ Sitch’... !!!

Is it LUCKY To Live Where Violence IS... !?!
Is it REALLY Lucky To Come From Money... ?

Because People Act... FUNNY...
Like Bees WITHOUT... Honey... !!!

I DON'T Come From Cash...
Or ANYTHING Like THAT... !!!!!

I Come From A Place  ...
Where Luck Said...

“Hey, your a lil’ too dark,
to not be marked,
as a threat to heads,
who believe in nonsense !”

Like A Lot of What’s Said...
On... Internet Threads...

Now That’s NOT Meant...
To Express Sentiments...
Like The Current US President... !!!!!

How Lucky Can I Be...
To... SEE Him Lead...
Or To Be A Part of A Society...

Where Violence Leaks........
Into.... Our Young Seeds.... ?

Who Now DON'T CARE...
About... Elders Welfare... !!!

So Many Suggest...
That I'm A... " LUCKY Gent "...

As If I’ve... NOT Dealt...
With... PRESSURE And STRESS... !!!!!

As If I HAVEN'T Been Sent...
To... " Psychiatric Heads "... ?

Because of THREATS That I DID EXPRESS...
When My Mother FACED Death... !!!!!!!!!!

Was It REALLY That LUCKY... ?
To Have A... SICK Mummy... ?

And A Father Who Then LEFT............
Having Dished Out VIOLENCE... ?!?
To Her BODY... Mind and SOUL... !!!

It Seems That Folks DON'T Wanna Know …
How Things In Your Life REALLY DO GO... !!!!

They’d Rather DEFER...
Because They PREFER...
To Suggest That... “ LUCK “...
Has Made Me... TOUGH... !!!!

I’m Tough Alright...  !!!
Because My Vibes DEFIED Hard Times...
So That I Could Live Life And Now Write Rhymes...

That Tell The... TRUTH...
About Luck And It’s Moves....

I’ve EARNED My Luck... !!!!!!!!
It Didn’t Just Come Like The Rising Sun... !!!!!

Is it Lucky To Have...
The Skin of A Man...

Whose... DARKER TAN...
Can Cause... PROBLEMS...
And... LOSS of Life... !!!!
When Police Are In SIGHT... ?!?

I’ve Been LUCKY Alright To NOT Have DIED...
When Police Have TRIED In The Shroud of Night...
To Suggest That I Have Committed Crimes... !?!

In FACT In The Day...
They've Behaved THE SAME WAY... !!!!!

Because of The Sight...
of My... Black Face... !!!

Am I LUCKY To Be... ???
A Man Who Sees *******...
Run... AWAY From Me... ?!?

Because They Seem...
To Think I’m... UGLY...
Or A THREAT To Them...
Because of The DEPTH...
of... My SKIN TONE... !!!

HOLD ON There Bro... !!!!!
Before You Try To Say...

“ That it just ain’t so ! “ …

Have You Lived In My Shoes... ???

If Your Answer Is... NO...
Then I’m... GLAD For YOU... !!!

But DON'T Think That It’s Cool...
To Suggest To Me That I’m A LUCKY Dude...

Or That I Have Been Blessed...
With MUCH MORE LUCK Than ALL THE REST... ?!?

If That Was The Case...
I’d See My Poems ALL OVER The Place... !!!

But That’s... NOT The Way...
That My Artistry... " Sways "... !!!

Am I LUCKY To Relate... ?
Thought Waves That STATE...

A Wish For MORE TRUTH...
When LIARS Are The Ones...
Who... CLEARLY Get Through... ?!!!?

Well My Luck DOESN'T Run...
Quite Like THEIRS Son... !!!!!!

I KNOW What It IS...
To... NOT WANT To Live... !!!!!
And To Then RECOGNISE...
That THAT's... NOT So wise... !!!

Because You Have To LIVE LIFE...
And Give THANKS Sometimes...

But Just BECAUSE Things...
APPEAR TO BE... “ LOVELY “...

DON'T PRESUME That Your Buddy...
Has... NEVER Been Hungry... !!!!!

You Can Make Your Own Luck...
But Some Get... “STUCK”... !!!

So...
Let Me Put This... BLUNTLY... !!!

THINK BEFORE..........
You Speak Like A... " DUMMY "... !!!!

Because...
Some Folk Can Get... TOUCHY... !!!!!!

When You TELL Them That.....
YOU... THINK That....

They’ve Been.....

....... “ Lucky “ …….
Everybody isn't as lucky as you might think ......

A piece of white paper
A box of new crayons
An assortment of colors
A palette of shades that are
More than just labels

Chestnut; a horse's coat
A woman's locks
And a roasted treat.

Mahogany; a tropical tree
A dining table
And a name of a bay.

Copper; a lucky penny
A kettle
And Lady Liberty's robe.

Burnt Orange; a sunrise
A sunset
And a sunburn.

Brown; hot cocoa
A chocolate lab
And muddy boots.

Flesh; pale peach skin
Not mine
And maybe not yours.
This was a poem I wrote in high school as part of a final English project. My poetry has progressed, but I'm still proud of it. My professor loved it = high grade which is good enough for me
I said it wasn't my country,
so I watched her milks turn acids
her blood diluting her rivers of honey
and her tears washing off her own fertility.

I had no fear—
     for it wasn't near.

I said it wasn't my tribe,
so I saw,
but pretended not to have even looked
I listened,
but pretended not to have even heard
Yet it was written on my every line;
they aren't of my kind.

I didn't care—
     for it wasn't my tears.

I said it wasn't my religion,
so I turned my back
reciting from my scriptures
I have eyes, but had no vision.

I had no fear—
     for of God, who dares?

It came for my country, but I wasn't near
It went for my tribe, but I wasn't there
It came for my religion, but I wasn't aware.
Now it has come for me,
but there's no one here.

Take a stand do not back down,
If you don't see the problem take a look around.
Open your eyes to what's been in our face for years,
I will never understand your pain or everyday fears.
But I stand beside you with eyes full of tears.
The color of our skin should not determine whether we live or die,
The color of our skin should not separate you and I.
Our world is sick and I'm praying for a cure
So that people of all colors can walk the streets feeling secure.
People are dying by the very people there to protect us,
This is Injustice and I pray this will connect us.
Black, white , purple or green,
Let us all come together and show up to the scene.
We can become one and spark a change,
Heart to heart, hand to hand exchange.
The evil in the world makes my heart shatter,
When will you all understand that black lives matter?
I will never understand but I stand with you.

I hate  political conversations
Especially ones about our dear nation
Should I start with the politician’s lies
Or society’s bias?
Yes, I am young and I don’t know much
But did you see how hard she clenched her purse?
Youths wanna be big
But don’t want to stoop to dig
Trying to look for shortcuts to success
That carries no stress
Men and women in uniform always forget life is A boomerang
they think they can play God cos they’ve got big guns
Our government claim they don’t have enough resources to help us all
but go the extra mile to fund meaningless wars
Humans have allowed their love for innovation to devour them
so much they have failed to acknowledge what they have become
People are so quick to praise loyal partners
Is Cheating acceptable and accessible now?
Politicians love  using tragedies to stay relevant
making false promises to win people over
Countries can’t fix the war on their soil
but go around bombing other countries
to steal their resources and destroy innocent lives
for their financial gain
I see you lot who embrace our black culture
but keep quiet when it comes to our struggle
You can’t choose when to be black sweetie
I don’t know why Vloggers brag about their good deeds
Don’t get me wrong, I am always moved by  your touching videos
but you shouldn’t film the vulnerable
for your views
The internet has  succeeded in painting the perfect body for its audience
that people feel they would be rejected if they don’t meet the society’s standards
We look up  so much to celebrities
because they are reflections of who we want to be
instead of using our little time for our development

Don’t get me wrong
I know and understand

racism, pandemic, gun violence, greed, police brutality

i find it incredible
that you can look me dead in the eye
ignoring my dead comrade
and talk about the justice in this country
when the judge, jury, and executioner of the blacks
sits in the executive branch, alone
brandishing their badge
retrofitted to read "officer"
rather than "slave catcher"
and truth is framed as false
against their flimsy fabrications of innocence
that amazes me

i find it incredible
that you can be surprised by those boys in blue
beating our black skin blacker 'n' blue
'till red runs down our cheeks like tears from our eyes
so used to witnessing this onslaught of slaughter
that we can't cry tears half the time
that amazes me

i find it incredible
that you can honestly ask me
"how could this happen?"
as i fail to find footing
on this razor thin line
between being blinded by tears
trembling with grief, anger, and fear
and being so numb i can't speak
feeling like a monster for a lack of reaction
to the atrocities i have to witness
i've found a happy-less medium
and must be content to remain numb with rage
that amazes me

i find it incredible
that you can graciously remind me not to forget white and blue
while i scream into the void that i matter, too
unless, of course, i happen to be brandishing a hairbrush
or somehow disrupt your white life
then you quickly affix an asterisk to the word "all"
that amazes me

i find it incredible
that you can proudly proclaim your allyship
and in the same breath explain how
that black was a criminal
but i'm one of the "good ones"
because i'm not ghetto
and conditioned code switches into my DNA
so i'm not a threat unless i ask you to reel it in
and just possibly stop saying "******"
it triggers panic and makes me sick
when it falls from your pale lips
yet i stomach it and swallow my anxiety
sitting with a twisting gut in your presence
that amazes me

i find it incredible
that you seem to have this superpower
pulling you from awareness into blissful oblivion
that i can only imagine
because your life's not on the line
that amazes me
these are the types of fake allies and subtle racists that i've encountered. here's a quick poem to them

Differences built us up so high
We see the world from the sky,
Clinging to the topmost branch,
The way down is to fall apart.
Corynne Dittrich Jun 2020
I've heard about the hate between black and white,
Can't anybody see? This is so not right.
The problems start but never end.
Can't they see? We can just be friends.
The world is full of chaos,
And I'm thinking to myself
"Look at us!"
Pain was here
But it just grew.
I'm sorry, was that not enough for you?
You chant "All Lives Matter" in the streets.
Who were the ones who used to dress up in sheets?
Yes we know ALL lives matter.
Yours, mines. His. Hers. Theirs.
But when I walk down the street
No one stares.
This issue is a cancer. We must cut it out.
Eradicate the disease,
Until there's no more shouts.
Calling all the cops who deserve this time.
If you didn't see it coming,
Don't do the crime.
You've scarred each family
From the people we've lost.
You did this crime,
Now you pay the cost.
Cuz...
When someone says get off my neck
With your knee,
Cop look at yourself.
Is this really who you wanna be?
What's the difference between black and white?
What really matters is if you're doing something right.
Just imagine what you're putting someone through,
When you're disabling them,
Labeling them,
Believing something that has never been true.
But know it's up to you.
You can change this from being so blue.
Because imagine if it happened to you.

By Corynne Dittrich, age 15
He raised up his head,
Trying to speak,
Yet speaking nothing.

She opened her mouth,
Trying to mutter words,
Yet nothing coming out.

I can't breathe
Words never to be forgotten

I can't breathe
Words we carry on placards

I can't breathe
Words kicking down whiteness

I can't breathe
Words doing-away with racism

I can't breathe
Words demanding equality

I can't breathe
Words bridging the white and black gap

I can't breathe
Words changing the times

I can't breathe
Words destroying white supremacy

I can't breathe
Words uniting colors

I can't breathe
Words uniting races

I can't breathe
Words signifying unity

I can't breathe
Words causing race inequality uproar

I can't breathe
Words knocking down white brutality

I can't breathe
Words ending police brutality

I can't breathe
Words
Great words
Creating equality for all race
Ending police brutality
Doing-away white supremacy
Uniting all race
Uniting all colors
A must for all nations

Written by Tosan Oluwakemi Thompson
This poem is in honor of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Rayshard Brooks. It also tackles racism and race inequality as well as the right for black to be at the table of colours.
