I can not find Mae's recipe for Swedish rye bread;
I thought it was taped to the fridge next

to obituaries, and the phone number
of Joon’s Korean restaurant.  She knew

the bread recipe the way one knows the feel
of a lover’s back or a favorite character

of a cherished book.  I seldom think of her,
mostly when I am hungry or cold.  Today

I am both, and it is only September;
what will become of me by December?

He hugged me
Tears running down his face
I felt him shudder
For the whole human race

Just who condemned him
Has always been clear
The righteous
The believers
The possessors
Of fear

Yet sympathy
I felt
For the Devil
Himself
Because forgiveness
   Runs through my veins...

tiny as a seed,
but there's a life inside of me.
The shadows stretch across the hills
As ash blankets the heavens
Metal dyes the mushroom sky
And waves of fire deafen

Come, my love, into the dark
Ah, let’s away my darling
We’ll find the sun, ere morning comes
And buy it with a farthing

We’ll walk across the acid plains
And raft the spectral river
Voice a prayer on breathless air
For those who pulled the trigger

Now don your mask and gird your soul
Tonight we’re leaving shelter
Shed a tear for yesteryear
And curse the hand we dealt her

Tell me,
was she worth it?
While you caressed her skin,
did you think of me?
When she moaned,
did you hear my name?

One day,
maybe,
I will get
to see you again.
If I could go
back in time,
I would go back
to that day,
so many years ago,
when we were just
children playing in
the wake of time.
Unaware,
that the fleeting
moments were oh,
so precious.
Now,
five years
have gone by.
I am here.
You are not.
Time,
it never was on our side.
~letters I will never send.

Keep your distance,
Don’t get too close.
Enjoy the pure unfiltered happiness.

Soak it in from around the bend,
And imagine once more to begin again.
With someone new…

So many eyes, so few to see,
The future as it unfolds before you.
The want, the yearning,
The most basic human need.

Close your eyes, but do not blink.
Imagine yourself already there,
Yourself within in which you think.

This scene you see,
Couldn’t possibly be,
Someone else’s life passing before your eyes?
Or potentially your life just passing you by?

Calmly, slowly, most beautifully.
Are you to be sight within this scene?

Eventually your eyelids blink,
Though rare enough for anyone.
A wink and smile just might be seen.

When I saw you I knew,
I belonged in your scene.

On days like these it
makes sense to lose the common
sense of mine by you.
